The Social Network was a huge (pleasant) surprise to me. The soundtrack is out of this world, one of those albums you can just leave on repeat and never get bored of it.

The Witcher 2 has a really good soundtrack. I love the regicide theme and "a nearly peaceful place".

Also, the mass effectseries has an outstanding soundtrack. From the music that plays when you're made a spectre in ME1, to the suicide mission in ME2, to "leaving earth" and "an end once and for all" (extended epsecially) from ME3, I'd say the ME series gets the crown for best game soundtrack.

Alright, I have to say, the games with the best compilation soundtracks have to be the Need for Speed games.

Oh, shit and Sleeping Dogs! Had some of the best song compilation I'd heard in a game. Top notch work.

The Lord of the Rings deserves a mention too :D

Inception was intense theme ^

For me The Witchers, of course. Bioshock. And a movie for the life of me I cannot remember now.

I could try to put Ladybug song back in the game if I'll make Gibbet red tools working.

Now I always listen to a few Dawn of War 2 soundtracks

Made this play in Skyrim and TW2 menu screen

While there are many good soundtracks out there, there are not as many that also work outside the medium its being used for. Some music is simply brilliant in its context, but end up feeling a bit tame if you listen to it without the visuals that come along with it. That being said, there are some soundtracks that are amazing even if on listened to on their own. My favourite game soundtrack is without a doubt the one for Final Fantasy IX. It's a massive soundtrack (over 140 tracks, or 5 hours and 27 minutes of music - Nobuo Uematsu's magnum opus, I dare say) which manages to be near-flawless from beginning to end; every single track is a true joy to listen to it both in-game and otherwise. The Final Fantasy series has always had great music, but the ninth instalment is the only one that has a soundtrack without any bad or even somewhat mediocre moments to it. A true masterpiece, in my opinion.

When we get to movie soundtracks or film scores, I also have an obvious winner among my favourites. The best film score I have ever heard belongs to The Fountain. Much like the visuals of the film itself, its soundtrack is unbelievably evocative and haunting. It was composed by Clint Mansell and performed by Mogwai and The Kronos Quartet - I can scarcely think of a more tantalizing collection of artistic minds.

For film scores, any Nino Rota (the first two Godfathers and many more, but especially La Strada).

"How can we be happy amid the unhappiness of others? I'd do everything I could to give everyone a moment of happiness." [Nino Rota]
