Female Protagonist

I was so disappointed in BloodRayne. The first one started off as a horror game with corny jokes, then suddenly Nazis happened. I wish they'd reboot it, but drop the characters designed for 12 year olds and make it just a little bit darker. Without the Nazi. Couldn't finish either game because they got stupid very fast.

Not quite sure what you're talking about with "characters designed for 12 years old". Bloodrayne was never supposed to be very serious. It always was a bit of a lighthearted hack-n-slash with some grim dark humor. The Nazis just added to that over-the-top feeling that the game already had and in my opinion made it only better. It reminded me of one of my favorite anime/manga series, Hellsing Ultimate, which also has Nazi vampires and is over the top with grim dark humor.

My favorite scene from Hellsing Ultimate:

Man, as much as I love Rayne, no vampire protagonists ever beats Alucard, just none.

That Bloodrayne lass reminds me of another female half-vampire from an old horror game called Nocturne, if I remember correctly. Had the farming implements strapped to her arms and everything. Oh and a bit of Durham Red from 2000ad.

Well that's just an unfair comparison, of course Bloodrayne has nothing on the awesomeness that is Hellsing. :D

As for the design, for me BR walks a line between trying to be dark/serious but over-the-top at the same time, and it comes off as neither. The character designs themselves are pretty ugly, like very little thought was given to them beyond a few cliches. It can be done better. Then again, I am criticizing a decade old game, a modern version would probably be better.

@Blothulfur I just googled Nocturne, are you talking about Svetlana? Turns out she was supposed to be the protagonist in Nocturne 2 (that never got made), and that BloodRayne was heavily based on her. Interesting.

All this reminiscing about Rayne reminded me of when MTV released video mods of videogame characters singing popular songs. Early 00s were a strange time.

BloodRayne 3 should definitely be about a vampire goth band.

I'd totally forgotten the vampires name, didn't know that it was meant to be her originally in Bloodrayne. Looked it up and apparently one of the Spookhouse (supernatural FBI) agents was the protagonist in one of them Blair Witch games (Rustin Parr) that came out a while ago, seems like Nocturne spawned a little dynasty, weird.

BloodRayne 2 I liked, I must confess... :p
But I agree the character is just a pin-up caricature...

Regarding all the debate. it's clear to me that until theres a strong financial incentive, the Behemoths of videogame's industry such as EA and Ubisoft will never change their ways...
That is why Id always prefer to support a developer who is struggling to climb to the top (like CDP RED) and therefore more willing to take chances... Also, Id say there is a cultural aspect to it (Companies focused more to passionate and artistic work than bottom-line budgets).

Errr, just to be clear here, you know that CDPR isn’t struggling to climb to the top anymore, right? They’re already among the biggest studios of the industry. The vast, vast majority of developers can’t just up and make a 32 million dollar game without having to grovel at the feet of some asshole publisher.
I agree that they deserve our support but today they need it far less than many others do.

I can think of two developers who need more support, Taleworlds who made the Mount and Blade series and are currently working on the next one, and Warhorse Studios who are making Kingdom Come Deliverance (No, I am not just saying that because I'm a kickstarter backer!).

Desired character: Kreia. Intelligent, self motivated, to the point, highly moral, doesn't spout inanities or cutesy lines, terrifyingly strong will, and also realistically flawed: She is speciesist, manipulative, lacks empathy and thinks nothing of others feelings or causing offence, she lacks charisma. Also her disdain for violence is appealing, she sees it as a blunt tool, when she has a far more devastating and effective arsenal at her command.

Sex: Yes please.
Personality of Kreia and looks of Yennefer would be...

...something :coolstory:

For me personally i like my female protagonists hot and with a cool personality. As long as its interesting i really dont care if its objectification or not since its fantasy not reality. I dont expect woman IRL too be like my game characters.

Im against this recent trend of making game characters more "ugly" or with more realistic bodys when its done just too try too not objectify them. They are not real! If you do it for good reasons in game im fine with it, just like other thing like politics or whatever you want. If it fits the lore/story/game world and isent a total remake of already establised cannon its fine (depends on what game type it is ofc).

Doing it because ticking boxes on a checklist im not fine with. Remaking something just too fit it in depends on how its made. Never really understood this fixation with changing "history" even if its just games (its happening in ALOT of genres atm). If you want too tell a new story make a new story, dont take an already existing one and change it. Seems it more often fail too so i dont get it.

The latest triology of Tomb raider is a example of it when i never felt totally disconnected too the old Lara for example. It was fine for me but i also know some people did not like it. They did alot of changes but it wasent a remake of any of the old games, it was more a prequel type of thing.

Cp2077 did a great thing with Claire for example, it wasent in your face. Some games just cant do it subtly and fitting.

i dont know, im probably just getting too old too se the point :)

I'll agree with the getting too old part because liking your female protagonists "hot" is very telling of your mindset. I'm curious, when you play the witcher, is Geralts hotness one of your main factors to enjoy him as a protagonist?

If i liked guys it would probably be part of it, hot was probably the wrong way too say it. I dident really like Geralt at first, he was abit too grumpy and menacing. He really grew on me tho. I dont need too fall in love with the character but i need too find it interesting. But as i said as long as the character is interesting the looks are less important. People can be "hot" in diffrent way not just looks.

Totally missed the ide with the thread, i just rambeled on. For my favorite female protagonists id have too say : Shepard mass effect, Hawke Da2, Ciri (short time protagonist atleast), Lara in the newer games (liked the journey she took especially in the first one) There's plenty more but. Oh and im Male.

Personally, while I definitely don't mind female characters being depicted in a, shall we say, more realistic way, I'm not entirely sure that does that much against female objectification in the long run in a world in which porn is legal :smart: (real-life objectification like the one you mention)

"Hot" is a physical trait, there's really no different way to interpret that. In any case I think your position is clear. I can only hope we see a better generation of gamers than the last because it does spill over into the development process when the ppl writing the stories are more focused on hotness than actually writing a good story. Like the other guy said porn is legal, if ppl want to see women sexualized there is already an industry for that. Just write a good game character and story and I'll be satisfied.

"He" pretty much said changing how its depicted in games wont really change anything. Hot isent just a physical trait either, attraction isent just based on looks. I agree that they should not make characters just too be hot (looks wise). They need a good story with motivations and goals i can understand and like too. The female protagonists i listed are some of those that i enjoy playing as since they are interesting too me.

If you think im a bad person for that then so be it, hopefully your wish comes true and nobody will ever sexualize women again.

If you are going to complain about objectification of women, you had better also complain when it is done to men too. How many 6 pack abs, shoulders out to there, V torso, with major muscles everywhere guys do you see in games.....pretty much EVERY SINGLE ONE. If he happens to be a bit of a warrior then often he is made dumb as a stump....I am looking at just about every "grunt" marine style character and duke nukem for the win. For every Valkyrie in Diablo 2 you get running round in a boob breastplate, you also have a "barbarian" running around in a loin cloth, looking like Arnold from Conan back in the day.

Face it, both sexes like to look at good looking and fit characters when they are playing pretend in video games. Do some people not like it sure, but please don't act like it doesn't happen for both sexes. Personally, if I am going to play a video game, i don't want to see the main character with a body type like mine, and you probably don't want to see it either, trust me....so just enjoy the scenery of the good looking people that video games have and have fun.

Female Protagonist

I have been watching a few videos on female characters in games and their objectification and so on. And while this woulld be an endless discussion, my question is something different:
What kind of female character would you like to play, if you could choose any? What would she be like, what would be her traits, what would she look like? You can choose anything that comes to your mind. Genre doesn't matter.

I am especially interested in the answers of females, since this was the origin of the question from the topic above. But men are also welcome, but I would like everyone to state weather they are male or female.

I am male and I would like to play as a Miss Marple like character.
A character like Ripley from Alien or Sarah Connor from Terminator. It's funny how those are still the best female characters ever made after all this time.

I don't play as girl characters much. Almost never but if I did. I want to give them Aria T'loak energy from mass effect.
