Field of View

Field of View

Hey there!

Is there a possibility to alter the field of view on the PC? The current field of view makes me sick really fast :(

A shame though that CDPR didn't listen when a lot of people complained about the same issue in Witcher 2.

Edit: There was a troll in this thread, don't wonder about the weired conversation xP

Why would I pretend? If I wouldnt get sick from the current fov and be happy with the current fov, why would I ask to alter it?

Besides, what is the point of your post? If you don't like my question, why bother answering it? Does it affect you?

I play ~2.5 meters from a 46" TV on the PS4 version and the FOV is spacing me out. I'm not getting crazy headaches but its definitely too narrow and weirdly fisheye.

There's no way the game would be released if this was a problem for most people but this is a well documented issue for a small number of people across a wide range of games.

Also this has only started happening to me in my late 20's, so I wouldn't laugh too hard if you're still young, could happen to you too.

ROFL these people that get motion sickness because of the narrow field of view...I laugh out loud. This can't be real, surely, you're pretending stuff.
Just play the game at least 50 cm from the screen and you'll be fine

They've all been watching TotalBiscuit too much

Jesus Christ Mato87, I don't care if you believe me or not. I just asked politely for a way to alter the FoV, so what is your problem? Either way, it is offtopic, rude and adds nothing to the discussion. Reported.

Edit 1:

Research done at the University of Minnesota had students play Halo for less than an hour, and found that up to 50 percent felt sick afterwards.[15]

In a study conducted by the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences in a report published May 1995 titled "Technical Report 1027 - Simulator Sickness in Virtual Environments", out of 742 pilot exposures from 11 military flight simulators, "approximately half of the pilots (334) reported post-effects of some kind: 250 (34%) reported that symptoms dissipated in less than one hour, 44 (6%) reported that symptoms lasted longer than four hours, and 28 (4%) reported that symptoms lasted longer than six hours. There were also four (1%) reported cases of spontaneously occurring flashbacks."[16][17]

The phenomenon was well known in popular culture before it was known as simulation sickness.

Some posts have just been deleted. I hope there won't be more of a similar nature, if so, please feel free to report them.

Yes, I support also a way to change the Field of View. I get sick if I play the game at this moment. For me, and I belive for other too, the camera is too close, at least if we suffer of Motion Sickness.

That there is no Field of View option already is very strange for a PC game, but they still have the opportunity to add it in the future. Alternative options do exist to change this, but they'll more than likely be broken with future patches. The problem i had with the Cheatengine fix is that it made talking to NPC's / Cutscenes weird, so i had to turn it off for those moments.

80 - 90 FoV is usually where i set mine.

No, it's not the other way around. It's definitely too close to Geralt as it is, but in things like Cutscenes it's a different matter. Actually looking at the world is also much better with a higher FoV.

Found 2 screens that represents very well my own expectations regarding the FOV and the camera distance:

As one can see, the FOV is quite wide, so the combat would not be a problem if facing multiple enemies. Also, the default camera distance in TW3 is too FAR, and it simply CUTS/breaks the "connection" with Geralts AND the world itself. You cannot see details in the world and Geralts seems to be always too far. Well, for ME, at least. ;)

Sry, could not find a better looking picture (regarding the 1st one).

EDIT

I added a screen of my own from Witcher 2, while I was using a mod that increasead the FOV and set a fixed distance to Geralt: no zooming out anymore (even in combat, I hate that zooming out).

View attachment 15068.

I hear there's a mod in the works to alter the FOV and the (way too close) camera zoom level.

Can you provide a link about this information? Thx.

It is true that the default FOV of 60 is not too great.

Hopefully, on a the PC there's a way to change it:

- download Cheat Engine: http://www.cheatengine.org/downloads.php
- download this trainer file: http://forum.cheatengine.org/download.php?id=111228&sid=ad9064f96d840b83ab7482a260521be0
- double-click the trainer file to load it in Cheat Engine
- start Wicther 3 normally, load your saved game
- Alt-Tab to get back to Windows
- In Cheat Engine, use File > Open process, and select witcher3.exe, say 'Yes' to the prompts that might popup
- in the bottom part of the Cheat Engine window, enable 'Override FOV' and set the FOV field to the value you want
- get back in the game and enjoy the new FOV. It can be toggled to the default FOV with F2.

I'm using this tweak since the game is out and it works great without a noticeable performance hit on my system (GTX 970).
The default FOV is 60 and I'm using 70. Increasing it too much can look weird.
The new FOV doesn't play too nice with quest dialog scenes for which you will want to use the F2 toggle.

A higher FOV really help with immersion, as more of the world can be seen and the game feels much more high res.

@bobbie424242

But doesn't CE screws up the cutscenes and actually INCREASES camera distance from Geralt instead of just widening the viewable area?!

That's not really a "change". It's just a workaround that doesn't fix the problem completely.

Yes it increases the distance in cutscenes but introducing visual artifacts sometimes such people not standing on the ground.
It is clear that this was never tested with a higher fov. But that's not a problem for regular gameplay.
I just manually reset the fov with F2 for cutscenes and that's OK.

Well, personally it is not a solution for me, as I already don't feel OK with the camera positioning in the game. I rather have something similar to W1 or even W2 (but with a wider FOV, of course).

Thanks for taking time to provide the solution, though!

(some people already knew about it for some time ;) )

The Witcher 3 needs of a FOV slider. And this, must be put in Xbox One and PS4 versions too.

Please, do this CDPR.
