Well, some hands are better if you go second, some are better if you go first. If you know who goes first before you decide which cards to discard you can tweak your hand better, which increases tactics/strategy and decreases the influence of the coin flip(luck)

What?! Are you using Scoia ability on first round when you have 50% chance to go last anyway instead after round you won?

A good counter to Scoia'tael ability is to play Prince Stennis and get the card advantage right back on the first round.

It is not a counter at all. It doesn't matter if you play Stennis vs Sco or other faction: you always achive the same - card advantage for 7 points. So it isn't a counter.
