Forcing Vsync without Suttering

quad core i5 3.4ghz, win7 64bit, hd7850, 4g ram

I know Vsync isn't an in-game option, so you might not care for the suttering that it produces when forced through a 3rв party application (like D3DO) but the frame rate is going all over the place, from 56fps to 130fps (in open areas. in closed areas when the FPS is really high (150 +) the tearing is barely noticeable and is not a problem anymore, but u can't keep such high frame rate in outside areas, even on the lowest settings).

If I force Vsync, the game starts to to hitch and sutter. There's no suttering if Vsync is disabled.
Game dosen't really drop below 60fps.

Please, there must be a way to play this game without tearing and still without stuttering, I can't give up on those two basic technical aspects. It's not a good experience if the game doesn't run smooth and tears, it needs to be consistent :)

With framerates that high i`m assuming it`s witcher 1 . Do you have the latest updates from your computer manufacturer .
The latest DirectX
2010 VC Redistributables
You might also be able to tweak some card settings using RadeonPro

Thank you. Yes indeed I'm speaking of TW1, and yes my PC is completely up to date.

I know of RadeonPro, but I don't know which settings could help me with the suttering. Any suggestions? Anything else I can do? I hate thees kind of lil problems.. Vsync on, game runs 60fps, but sutters for some unexplained reason \:

I think it`s flip queue size . I don`t know if RadeonPro has a FPS limiter that you can adjust or not but i know that MSI Afterburner does once you have it setup to where it shows some settings in OSD and in the server display then click the wrench and set the FPS to what you desire and click ok .

You can try a technique I use that has worked for some of my games that have stuttering problems. Basically you just limit your Framerate one or two Frames below your monitors Refresh Rate (So if you had a 60Hz monitor, cap Framerate to 59 or 58) , sometimes this actually works in eliminating odd Micro-Stuttering/Stuttering you get in games that are not performance related. So yeah give that a try, if it works you will have no tearing with Vsync being on and no stuttering. To limit Framerate you can use programs like Dxtory/Bandicam/EVGA Precision/MSI Afterburner etc.

Another thing that would have helped though if you had a Nvidia card is to set Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames to 1. This setting for me creates stuttering in some of my games but lowering it down to 2/1 or even 0 if config file lets me eliminates the stuttering.

But yeah, good luck.

thanks guys, i've manged to find a good way to balance this.. actually fix this even. the RadeonPro beta has some new stuff that are pretty good, like dynamic vsync, and frame limit. it's also rather aggressive so it works well.

anyway, turning down flip queue size to 0 and turning on dynamic vsync = perfect. I get a single tear once in a while when switching between cutscence and gameplay, but it's worth it, I think dynamic vsync offers better performance than constant vsync or capping it at 59\61 (tried those things too). game is smooth and fluid now :)

I just wanted to tell you about RP beta - I've been using it for the last two weeks with TW1, and it works really nice.

Out of curiosity, which settings have you been using with RP beta?
