Gambling: Loot Boxes & Gwent

This topic isn't specifically about Gwent, but rather about all Online Collectible Card Games (CCG).

The GWENT card game is modelled on gambling. As for your comment that "the Dutch approach, stating that if it doesn't generate economic value to their users (like Poker), it's not classified as [gambling]", well, firstly, gambling generates economic losses to players mostly. Secondly, the harms of gambling aren't limited to economic losses. It can include things like spending too much time on it, to the detriment of other aspects of your life.

CDPR's model is very cynical. It's modelled on gambling. So far the harm to me hasn't been economic as I haven't paid for anything related to the game. I doubt that I will either.

The GWENT card game is modelled on gambling.

I noticed this post in the forum today. It pretty much illustrates part of my point about how CDPR has designed GWENT, as in how they want it to work (but this example seems a bit extreme as far as the intended effect goes).

Edit: By "modelled on gambling", it might be more precise to say "modelled on how poker machines work" or something along those kinds of lines.

I noticed that the addicted player posted up a response to his situation recently. Here's my reply to them (it got deleted, so I'll post it here):

Then something deep down in my gut told me that this guy was farming gg's. That's how I got the idea and planned to do the same from next day.

So I started doing it and found myself benefited. I started doing if for 12-14 hours a day. My family members didn't like it especially my mom. I was playing too much video game, spending sleepless nights. I was doing all these to collect necessary resources for next expansion. Cause after 31st august I wouldn't be able play the game that much. Cause I am a university student and my university had been off since march because of this covid 19 pandemic and would have opened on 1st of September....I did all these things to play gwent cause I love this game a lot. If was intended to do exploits why would I put that amount to a game?

Some interesting points for me:

1) IRONATION says that they "love this game" but what they are spending most of their days on playing that game for is "farming gg's", so I would say that they are addicted to the game for non-gaming factors.

2) IRONATION asks: "why would I put that amount to a game?". I think that they answer their own question earlier in their post when they say: "to collect necessary resources for next expansion".

That's the addictive element that CDPR deliberately puts into their game. I'm playing the game for that purpose too but I'm not spending money on it or nearly as much time either, so it's not that big of an addiction to me. In fact, if the daily reward doesn't interest me, I can easily not play much at all. E.g. I'll play for a key or keys but not something involving playing factions that I don't usually play with. The latest Journey isn't doing that much for me and its Crown rewards don't interest me that much if they're not keys (I'm not playing the Premium Journey version). Having avatars to collect isn't a big draw for me in the Journey. This might actually be my exit from the game. I could trying playing a more conventional single-player game.

3) Since you're addicted to this game and going to university soon, I'd say that CDPR have done you a favour by banning you from the game. If you were going to uni and still playing this game a lot, I'd say that your grades would probably suffer.

Huh thanks for the info. For someone who is still learning the basics of the game this is very useful cheat-sheet that is for sure. I was always into the Witcher series so when I herd that the game was out I was excited. I think it is probably the first card game that I have been actively trying to master. I men a lot of my friends have been trying to teach me poker so that we could have poker nights but I never really payed attention to it. I always liked slots a lot more. I know it is weird but for me slots are kind of the epitome of the spirit of the casino. I have played a few different online casino rooms while on self-isolation but my personal favorite is probably the one called joker123. It is fairly new on the web and the focus mostly on slots so they do work for me. I think that if you guys are interested you should give it a go. If you like slot machines you might like it lot
