Game Crashes to Desktop (no error message)

Hello everyone! New here, and from my own research I am finding this is a rather common issue! Basic run down is that the game
crashes to the desktop randomly without an error message.

I'll first list PC specs:

OS: Windows 10 Pro 64bit
GPU: GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB (Aorus)
CPU: Intel i7-7820x @3.60
PSU: Seasonic Prime 1000w Titanium (SSR-1000TD)
RAM: G.Skill TridentZ 8x8GB DDR4 4000
Mobo: Aorus x299 Gaming 9
Storage: 2TB WesternDigital Black HDD, Samsung EVO 960 500GB, Samsung EVO 960 250GB

^The game is installed to the HDD through steam, if that matters.

Steps Taken:

Disabled XBOX Game DVR.
Disabled Nvidia Streamer Services.
Checked temperatures to make sure its not a heating issue.
Tried lower and higher graphics settings, to no avail.
Verified integrity of the game cache.

The game runs smooth as grease lightning on maxed out settings, the crash is just immediate and random.

This appears to be the issue right here. It looks like the game is not properly installed / updated.

Ensure the following:

0.) Remove any and all mods. Reinstall the latest versions once you get things working again.

1.) Ensure you install any purchased DLC and ALL Free DLC (whether you intend to use them or not).

2.) If you've already verified the cache, you may need to do an uninstall / reinstall. I recommend this anyhow, because:

3.) You'll really want to have the game installed on an SSD. HDDs are not a problem, per say, but you'll be quadrupling your load times and this may have an effect on streaming textures, meshes, etc.

4.) To that end, you can follow these steps to move an existing Steam installation. You'll likely need to verify all games once after doing this. Just be sure, if you do decide to do this, that you uninstall TW3 before the move, manually delete ...Steam\steamapps\common\The Witcher 3\... and ...Documents\The Witcher 3\... then freshly reinstall it after the move. (Just be sure to backup your gamesaves folder first!) Not that you can't move TW3...but if there's a problem with a broken installation, you'll likely migrate the issue, too.

5.) Ensure that the game is not installed anywhere under Program Files or Program Files(x86). Just put Steam on the root of the drive.

Alright...let's see what that does. Post back with any results.

Ok I will follow these steps, but i'm seeing a consistent problem here, and that is the save folder location being in my documents. The My Documents folder is located on my C:/ drive, which is where the OS is installed, which is the 250GB SSD. The game will be installed on the D:/ drive, the 500 GB SSD. Is it OK to have the My Documents save folder on another drive? If not, I can always relocate it to the SSD that the game shares.
 
So I followed your steps, clean install onto the SSD, and it was running for a decent span of time, and crashed only when I attempted to load most recent save after dying.

0.) Disable all Steam overlay features.

However, I smell Windows 10 cooking something...and it may have invited anti-virus to over for tea.

1.) Set the Permissions for ...Documents\The Witcher 3\... to "Everyone". Do the same for Steam folder if it allows it.

2.) What anti-virus are you using? Add Steam's and TW3's installation folders and the ...Documents\The Witcher 3... folder to its exceptions list.

After that, try running another verification through Steam. If this doesn't help, go into User Account Control and see:

3.) What sort of account are you running? User, Guest, Admin, or Hidden Admin?

4.) What level is UAC itself set to?

Are you using anything like Geforce Experience, Razer Booster, etc. or any overclocking?

That sounds like a very solid setup. Good one. Let's dig.

It's possible that Avira could be hooking something, so playing with it disabled would be worth a shot. The other programs you mention should not be causing an issue...unless you're running in Windowed / Borderless mode. In that situation, quite literally anything else on your system could potentially grab the focus and cause the crash.

Let's talk about Windows Power settings next. Any chance there's a power-saver setting or screen saver that could be kicking on? You have plenty of wattage, but if this continues, having the PSU tested might be worth a look. (Do these crashes happen with any other games?)

Considering a possible issue with the graphics card, if you download GPU-Z, you can leave that running, and it will monitor the video card while you play. The graphs should then show why the game crashed in terms of heat, voltage, available RAM, etc.
 
Internet Service has been down the past few days, so I haven't been able to read or respond. I am now going to try and run GPU-Z while I play and let you know if it picks anything up when it crashes.

Changed power setting to High Performance (duh, should have done that after building the rig, thank you) and also disabled any screen saver options.

During the time the internet was down, I did play the game extensively and experienced crashes enough times to piece together a rough outline of observations:
  • The first crash happens generally around 1-2 hours of gameplay.
  • The second crash happens usually after about 20 minutes into playing again.
  • The third and following crashes can happen within minutes of relaunching.
  • At that point, I shutdown and reboot my computer, and I am able to play for another hour or 2, USUALLY.
Another observation that I have noticed in conjunction with the crashes is that the physics engine is acting strangely. Any enemy that I kill is usually sent FLYING away, sometimes 20~30 feet into the air. Ragdoll corpses often go limp, and then twitch once and gain some air time, though usually only a small distance. This is leading me to believe the problem might have to do with my card over exerting itself to process physics related things? I tried going into nVidia Control Panel>Manage PhysX to designate my CPU to handle PhysX processes. I played a little after changing that and it still crashed, but it's worth trying again.

Will post soon if anything catastrophically fails :D

Did this begin after installing 387.92 drivers? After I installed them, I got a similar problem, but I only get crash files and only after I exit the game, never during gameplay does Witcher 3 crash for me.

All of this sounds like you may, in fact, have a more serious issue. Potentially hardware. The systemic crashing you're describing is usually a sign that something is damaged phsyically, but it takes a certain amount of heat or built-up charge to manifest. I'm leaning toward voltage here, as it take time to appear, then happens in quick succession, but "resets" itself when you restart (which will partially discharge the motherboard). It could be the GPU...it could be RAM...it could be the mo-bo itself. I can safely say that based on your description, it is definitely not the game.

I would recommend taking your PC into a good shop (preferably a shop that builds custom PC gaming rigs), and having them test it. (Don't even bother with Best Buy or places like that. If that's all you've got, probably better to just hunt down an individual that knows their stuff.)

Did you physically put it together yourself? Do you have the records of the burn-in?
 
Hello, sorry I haven't replied recently. I have been pretty fed up with the game crashing so I have been playing other games instead. I really hope the issue is not hardware or voltage related. I built this rig myself, and I was very careful with it during the building process. HOWEVER, the GPU is the only thing that stands out as possibly problematic because when I received it from amazon, it had appeared to have been tampered with and there were slightly bent heat sync parts. I manually fixed that, and the GPU has performed flawlessly while being thoroughly taxed from many games newer than Witcher 3. No other games crash like The Witcher 3, so I find it hard to believe that it's the rig. I'm not an expert on the subject, so I am prepared to be wrong, and I defer to your opinion. I am still slightly bothered by the fact that the crash logs STILL read "Build: Not Set" I don't entirely follow what that means, could you explain further?
 
I know this thread is old, but in case someone comes across this later, the majority of issues are resolved by turning off Steam cloud saves (Right click on the game in the your library, choose properties, switch to the Updates tab, and then uncheck the box that says "Enable Steam Cloud Synchronization for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt". For good measure, I also turn off the Steam Overlay in the General tab as well. While there can be other causes for this issue (e.g. GOG specific, driver-specific, A/V, etc.), interference/interrupts from saves is one of the simplest ones to check, but also one of the easiest to forget and the most vexing to troubleshoot.
 
How do I access the "Red Engine Crash Log" after the game has crashed to desktop?

For me it is :
C: --> Program files (x86) --> Steam --> Steamapps --> common --> The Witcher 3 --> Bin --> x64 --> and then you will see the crashinfo-files . :)

The "fix" is to revert to 399.24 or 387.87 drivers. Or I guess any driver 399 or below.

1080 Ti and 1070 Ti crash on 400+ drivers in Witcher 3. No idea why. And no idea whether Nvidia is going to fix that.
