You're either missing files the game is looking for, or there is a version issue.

1.) Remove any and all mods if using any.

2.) Be sure you have any purchased DLC and ALL Free DLC installed (whether you intend to use their features or not).

3.) Verify the integrity of the game's cache through Steam / GOG / Origin.

Hopefully, you'll see the game repairing files and it will launch. Can you also confirm whether or not launching a new game works?
 
game crashes with no mods, playing the GOTY version with all the DLC installed, i've reinstalled the game and windows, launching a new game works, i've also tried all the basic troubleshooting easily found on this site and google, nvidia experience, vsync, unlimited / 60 frames, fullscreen / borderless, hairworks, drivers, windows updates, etc. would also like to add my computer is experiencing no other issues and i recently finishing playing doom and didn't have a single crash. i have like 20 crash reports in my folder, i've looked them over but i don't know what i'm looking at. shouldn't they tell you why the game is crashing?

These crashlogs are really generic and don't provide much debug info, but I'm 99% sure these crashes are caused by either hardware of faulty drivers. Such generic callstacks are usually reported by the game when it encounters various performance-related problems that prevent it from working correctly.

What are your PC's specs? Do you have latest drivers installed? Have you tried clean-installing latest drivers? Obsolete old driver files are often responsible for notorious game crashing, so it's worth checking.
 
i have stress tested all my hardware. i re-installed windows with all the latest drivers so there is no old drivers present on my system. hardware or drivers is the easy answer, but since i have already done my end of the troubleshooting and no other game i play gives me problems i am 99% sure the problem is on your end. as i'm sure you are aware it's your job to make sure your software is compatible with an overwhelming amount of hardware and software configurations. this sounds like a daunting task and it's not impossible you missed something and it's conflicting. my computer is also more than capable. intel 4700K, GTX 1080, samsung pro ssd, 8gb ram, 1000w evga power supply. i recently finished playing tomb raider in 4K which has a reputation for being the most demanding game this year. no problems there, but the witcher 3 has crashed more than any game i have ever played. i have attached a screenshot of my crash log folder for you so you can grasp the severity of the problem. as you can see the amount of times this game has crashed in unacceptable. if you pay attention the the time stamp you can see it sometimes crashes within a few minutes of play time. if these crash logs don't tell you why it's crashing then i'm assuming you will not be able to help me and it's your players problem and not CDPR, right?

The game IS compatible with an overwhelming amount of hardware and software configurations, and, as you're clearly a PC expert, you'll know that it's YOUR job to troubleshoot when your PC is having problems that don't happen on other PC's with similar configurations.

So it may help if you approach this from the viewpoint of "You have a problem" and allow others to try to help you solve it.

Start with the full details of your specs, including driver versions, whether or not you're overclocking, temperatures, more detail on the troubleshooting you've already carried out. And whether or not you've tried the suggestions vennecto has already made.
 
as previously stated, i have already done everything that was mentioned. i also went the extra mile and re-installed windows which is truly going to the extreme to solve this problem. i have done my due diligence and tried every potential solution i could find. where the problem lies is a matter of perspective. i may be experiencing problems but that doesn't automatically make my system the source of the problem. it's not my responsibility to make sure the game runs good on my system. excuse me if i am being a little smart with my words but put yourself in my shoes. look at my screenshot, scroll down, and tell me you would not be aggravated. and then when you ask for help you are told i am 99% sure the problem is drivers or hardware that's basically saying my mind is already made up and i am confident the problem is you not us. but hey, i get it, i'm sure you guys have seen this so many times you have good reason to believe it's the players problem. but when you hear 99% sure after you have been banging your head against the wall for days and doing everything that is within your power and then somebody comes along and says he is 99% sure after spending a few minutes reading a few sentences from the player it kinda rubs me the wrong way.

EDIT - i already mentioned my specs and what i have tried. driver version is the latest 373.06. i also tried an older version. i can game in 4K and don't need to OC so everything is stock. temps are normal.

So when did it start to crash, and what changed in the period between it not crashing and starting to crash? You posted before 12 Oct, and didn't mention then having any problems. Did anything change after that, or was it something that's always been happening? The graphics driver's new - you said you'd tried an older one, did you do a clean install with the older ones? If not, try that.

For troubleshooting purposes, I'd also suggest you try not running in 4K. Just to see if it makes a difference, it may help narrow this down. I'd also suggest that when you do that clean driver install you try it first without Geforce Experience and/or 3D, if you normally allow those to be installed. (Or with 3D installed if you usually say no. Either way, the opposite to what you normally do.)

Is it the Gog or Steam version? If you're using Gog Galaxy, don't. Set up a shortcut to run the Witcher exe direct and make sure Galaxy isn't running at startup. It's still beta, and there is a chance that something there has changed during the relevant timeframe and is affecting you. If you're using Steam, turn off the overlay for testing purposes - Steam client tends to be more stable, but there was an update during the relevant period.

I said earlier that this wasn't a common problem, but I googled the exception error message and there were a LOT of reports over it during the first few months after the game was released. The problem then was graphics drivers - Nvidia didn't really come out with a decent one for the game until about August 2015. After that, the problem pretty much went away.

(And no, I don't think it's the player's problem, just the player's PC :) )
 
it's been crashing since day one. it crashed before i made it to the white orchad inn. switched some settings around and thought that took care of it. was able to play for a few days without incident. eventually it crashed again. played with some settings and was fine for a bit. but eventually it happened again. got to the point where i was able to play for the day or a few hours but i knew it would crash again so i switched the auto save to 3 minutes so i would stop losing progress. i put up with it like that for the whole vanilla campaign. but when i started doing the expansions it got so bad to the point it was crashing several times a day or even after a few minutes. i tried everything i could and spent more time than i should reading witcher 3 crash fix threads. the other day i was doing the hearts of stone quest where you have to find the guy in the castle to free olgreid. i had to run through that damn valley 4 times cause it would crash during the cut scenes. eventually i just skipped all the cutscenes so i could save and i ended up watching them on youtube. this was turning in to a miserable playing experience so i contacted CDPR through their support system. i got the exact same response from them as i did in this thread, hardware and drivers. i've worked in the computer industry most of my life. this is the default no effort required response you get almost every single time you have a technical problem. i responded saying i attached my crash log please take a look at it and let me know if you can tell me anything. i never head back and that's when i posted here.

it crashes in 1080p. i have never installed the geforce experience or any of the drivers i don't need such as HDMI audio 3D and all that other junk, just display driver and physix. gog release. i always start from the exe. i don't think the problem is my pc. the problem is the games relationship with my pc. regardless, it's unlikely anybody will be able to help. my sole hope was getting information from these crash logs. but if they don't tell you what is causing the crash then i'm just banging my head against the wall. i finshed the campaign and hearts of stone. guess i will just have to suffer through blood and wine or not play it. and since my patience with this has long expired i guess i will just skip it and to be honest that's not creating a good experience between the player and the developers.

I've seen crashes with very similar messages in the crash logs.
Here are my experiences with crashes that I've encountered (I've clocked over 1300 hours in the game):
- They typically happen right before a cutscene.
- They happen when you're running through GOG Galaxy and you lose your internet connection intermittently (it's probably something to do with achievements in the game).
- They sometimes happen when GOG Galaxy detects an update for any game or itself while you're in the game.
- Some versions of Nvidia GeForce Experience over the last year or so have caused random crashes. Force quitting them or uninstalling them helps in general.


Since you've eliminated GeForce experience and GOG Galaxy, that leaves only one option, which is the game engine itself or the Nvidia driver.

The crashing is very rare since the recent patches (once every 40-50 hours of gameplay and only during the start of a cutscene).
I've also played this game on two separate PCs and three different graphics cards although all of them are Nvidia cards (GTX 660 Ti, GTX 970, GTX 1080). The crash behavior was consistent among both PCs and all three graphics cards.


The highest number of crashes occurred when I had the GTX 660 Ti, although I believe it's more to do with the game being in its initial versions of release rather than the graphics card or driver itself.
The GTX 970 and GTX 1080 have had very few crashes between them, but it does happen once in a while as I mentioned.

Also, have you tried running the On-Screen display from MSI Afterburner to see if your GPU is hitting any power or temperature limits which might be thermal throttling the card?
Typically I've noticed that Witcher 3 stresses the GPU far more than any benchmarking application such as Unigine Heaven/Valley or 3D Mark Stress tests.
I see the highest temperatures on the GPU when running Witcher 3.
 
i have to agree, it does seem to crash more during cut scenes. the only time i can recall it crashing during combat was the first olgreid fight. i was very irritated cause that was a long fight. i have not used afterburner but i have stress tested with unigine. card performs as expected.
 
I experienced a rash of CTDs at about the 40 hour mark in my game (6 or 7 within an hour), so I know how frustrating it can be. I was running the game through GOG, and did exactly what Dragonbird suggested: I created a desktop short cut (I also right clicked and checked "run as administrator" on the shortcut ((Windows 10)). I loaded a save game and I haven't had a single crash since using the shortcut (over 80 hours more logged).

I only mention this because Dragonbird had asked you how you were starting your game (Steam, Origin, or GOG), and I didn't see a response to that question. If you haven't tried this, at least give it a shot before you give up on the game.
 
I've been through this for decades, @misterdeanmoney. I know the frustration, and I know the headache. I also know that getting frustrated and giving myself a headache just delays my finding the fix. We wanna play with PC power? This is the price.

You have adequate power, so if you're not overheating, then it's possible that this is just the Nvidia 1000 series' growing pains. Have you tried a few different versions of the drivers? If so, you may simply have to wait for the next official WHQL version. One thing I want to confirm is that it's not the game itself. I've played through the game 4 times and have never crashed once. That wouldn't be possible if there was something inherently wrong with the game.

Other possibilities to explore:

1.) Try using NVInspector to force a Frame Cap of 58 FPS.

2.) Be sure the installation path is not under Program Files or Program Files(x86).

3.) Open task manager when running the game and quickly eyeball what's gobbling up the CPU and RAM when it crashes. (I almost always find something interesting when I do this, but it does take some tries.)

4.) Since you put it together yourself, are you sure you installed the latest firmware / BIOS? Personally, I never trust what comes in the box and always research it myself.

5.) Out of curiosity, are you using a matched set of RAM? Single chip? Mix-matched pair?
