Game Crashing and Display Driver Crashing starting today after playing 1.04 for hours and hours...NOTHING has changed...WHY?!?

Basically, title says it all. I have played 94 hours of Witcher 3. I've had about 2 crashes in the first 93.5 hours. In the last half hour, I've had a dozen or more crashes, always accompanied by my nVidea Display Drivers crashing. I installed the latest drivers the moment they came out basically, so they've been on my computer since 05/18. I downloaded 1.04 moments after it came out on Steam (I was playing, heard it had been released, stopped my game, downloaded it, started playing again), so that's been the same. The game did download the newest patch, containing the new DLC, but that was after about 4-5 crashes, in between me reloading the game and my computer.

In other words, I had the current nVidea drivers and 1.04 for days and was playing basically crash free. Than, for no reason, after playing for a couple of hours tonight, the game started crashing, and won't stop crashing. Literally nothing had changed before the tiny DLC patch tonight, and the crashing started happening before that patch was downloaded/installed. And again, it's bother my display drivers and my game, crashing at the same time.

So yeah, what's up with this? Why would shit that's worked fine for the last several days (in the case of the patch)/last week and a half (in the case of the drivers) all the sudden stop working and start not working constantly?

I am placing a DXDIAG dump in a spoiler tag below, but to put it into perspective, I play on all Ultra with 50-60FPS (basically, 60FPS locked that dips a tiny bit in cities or around a lot of hairy creatures cause of hairworks). So it's not the hardware. ((EDIT: The DXDIAG dump has been edited a tiny bit to take out things like my USB and PS2 info so that this post would fit the character limit on these forums))

Any help would be greatly appreciated. When the magical asshole computer gnomes come and break shit for absolutely no reason, it really drives me up a wall, so sorry if this is a bit terse.

Its the newest patch that broke it, i had 0 crashes before i installed it, now it crashes all the time, it absolutely screwed it, and yup the same problem says the display drivers gone wrong and recovered.

Again, I had crashes before the newest patch was installed. My first crash tonight was before the patch was even available for download. The patch that went live tonight was downloaded and installed in between my crashes. I started having problems, THAN I downloaded the patch, THAN I continued to have identical problems. In other words, it cannot be the patch tonight. That'd be impossible.

EDIT: And if by "newest patch" you mean 1.04 and not the DLC patch that was released just a couple of hours ago, that also cannot be the problem. I've had 1.04 installed and running 100% crash free since it was released right up until tonight. So unless, magically, 1.04 has some sort of decaying code or something that only starts crashing after you've been playing with that version for a while, that also cannot be my problem.

It's the new driver and it's been discussed on their forums. I get the same thing as you. Driver crashes for me sometimes out of game as well.

My 2 cents: disable VSynch and fps cap, stop using MSI Afterburner/Rivatuner On Screen Display (or clones rebranded by other gpu makers). You can use FRAPS for fps count and HWMonitor for temperatures instead. It solved my crashing issues both with 1.03 and 1.04. I'm using a GTX 970 gpu,

Maybe your graphics card broke due to stress. You should run some stability tests, like OC Scanner, to see if there are any issues. Try furmark too with high settings and lots of AA. Basically, you want some different tests and benchmarks that really stress your GPU to exclude hardware problems.

I have the exact same problem!
I played about 24hrs and had some crashes here and there, but nothing serious and maybe once per 5 hrs. I started my steam client today and he downloaded about 40MB for witcher and now my game crashes every 30seconds and I have to hardreset my PC. I played yesterday night without one problem. What is going on?

In my experience over quite a few generations of Nvidia cards, the "display driver crashing and recovering" indicates a problem with Nvidia's drivers in combination with a particular game(s). In the past, new drivers have completely eliminated this problem in certain games... A gpu that actually is on its way out has always displayed serious video artifacts, particularly when NOT in a game, for me.

For me and Witcher 3, crashing started after the 1.03 patch (~20 hrs with NO crash before that) and has over 90% been instant closing of the game with no error or event, just a handful of driver crashing and recovering.

And I'm using a 780 with drivers from Dec: 347.09! lol All those drivers that didn't even mention 700 series turned me off... and I have never really lacked performance for the games I play... so now waiting for Nvidia to get their act together and properly support my 780, and hoping they and CDPR can effectively communicate.

The NV driver is broken, it crashes even while just browing, watching something on youtube at times, that's a known issue.

Sometimes no crashes for 12 hours straight, sometimes 3-4 within half an hour.

It has to be Nvidia's new driver. I haven't had a driver crash since I got my pc until I installed the newest driver. Rolled back to the GTA V driver and the crashes went away. I haven't noticed performance suffering as a result either. Hopefully Nvidia comes out with a hot fix between driver versions.

I think this is true. My driver crashed once (sent in a bug report), but is otherwise stable. But despite the opinion of many people on the NVIDIA forums I do not think they intentionally lowered the performance for GTX 7xx and older cards. The are not that stupid - and they have a veritable shitstorm ongoing.

What it think happened is, that they pushed out the driver for TW3 before it was really ready, and well tested. If I had more problems, I would simply install an older driver, one or two version steps lower. This could still be a solution to all, who have problems with it. It is the recommended solution for owners of GTX 7xx and older cards, if you read NVIDIA and other gaming forums.

I am sure TW3 will perform much better soon, when CDPR makes further patches AND there is a new and corrected driver from NVIDIA.

Okay, so there are a lot of people here saying it has to be the new drivers. The new drivers came out on the 18th, the day the Witcher 3 came out (4pm PST 05/18/2015). I started playing the Witcher 3 that day, with the new drivers. I installed the new drivers before the game even came out. I played for 94ish hours with 1 or two crashes, none of which caused the drivers to crash. Now, after over a week of playing with the drivers and having 0 problems, the game and the drivers start crashing every couple of minutes, together. That's the drivers? What made the drivers go nuclear? They weren't changed at all and worked fine for over a week with 0 issues. So why now?

I'm having a really hard time believing that it's the drivers when the drivers worked flawlessly for so long.

As for MSI/Afterburner, I don't use those, I use HWMonitor for my temp monitor and FRAPS for my FPS counter (which I only ran for the first day or two, haven't run in over a week). I have tried the game at 60 fps cap and no fps cap and the crashing continues. I tried turning off vsync but holy hell that was giving me some serious motion sickness. It also didn't help with the crashing.

The card is basically brand new, so I doubt it's having some sort of problem mechanically, and the card hasn't ever gotten above 75 C, so it's not a heat issue.

Basically:

If it's the drivers, there needs to be an explanation why they worked 100% flawlessly for 10+ days before they had a single problem.
If it's patch 1.04, same issue as above, just a slightly smaller window of flawless performance.
Can't be the new DLC patch, that was downloaded and installed after the crashing started.
Isn't overheating, card is safe up until 105 C and never gets above 75 C.
Isn't nVidea Streaming or Chrome, made 100% sure these two things are off/disabled. Only things I have running while playing are Avast, Steam, & my nVidea stuff.

So what else could it be?
