Game freeze and crash multiple times per hour (Crash log attached)

Hi,

I get this error when I play the game. I can't see any pattern in when it crash, as it can be in cutscenes, in combat, while riding, walking, sprinting, swimming etc.

What happens when the game crash is the screen freeze, but game sound and story goes on. Have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill the process with task manager to quit the game. This happens a lot, usualy 2-3 times per hour if I play for a few hours.

I've tried to reinstalling the game, uninstalled graphic card drivers with Guru3D tool in safe mode and installed newest drivers from Nvidia, changed hard drive, installed all newest drivers for motherboard, every graphic setting and performance guide I've come across on the internet (both this forum, reddit and random blogs), verified game cache, window mode/window fullscreen/fullscreen, reinstalled .NET Framework. Installed Windows a month ago, so have not reinstalled that. Thing is I don't have problem with any other game or application on this computer, so I seriously doubt it's my Windows-installation or hardware.

My computer specifications (If that's of any use);
MSI X99S GAMING 7
Intel Core i7-5820K, 3.3 GHz
Crucial DDR4 Ballistix Sport 8GB
Samsung SSD 850PRO 128GB (For OS)
Samsung SSD 840PRO 256GB (For games including Witcher 3)
Gainward GeForce GTX 770 2GB PhysX CUDA

What's your graphic settings, have you tried any of the tips or tricks to see if they stop the crashes?
Have you tried turning the graphic settings down? because what your experiencing is a display/video crash, that's why you still hear sound.

To answer your question, yes.

Even at the lowest setting this game can run on, the game freeze. GPU running around 70 - 80 degrees celsius.

You should report these file to their support if they finally care about what we sent them, it should help many other users who experiment the same issues.

Thank you for pointing that out, CrocPoulet. I thought it would be the same to just post it in these forums. I've created a support ticket now, with a few extra details. I hope this get fixed quick :)

Just want to add some extra information to this. I've tried both Nvidia 352.86 (newest) and 350.12, and I have the problem with both of them.

I see increased crashes while doing the botchling/lumberkin-quest in Velen, but never on the exact same spot or cutscene.

Depending on where you live, the support ticket response may tell you to ask the support service of the software distributor where you live; I was told to bugger off to WB Games because I live in the States. You just know WB Games will respond with nothing more than "Check your drivers!". Ugh!

You don't really need to reinstall stuff; its the game. It has issues. It isn't sufficient to simply turn down settings, rather, that just makes it worse on high end cards. It is specific fixes that cut the crashing down. I fixed my issues (thankfully), as noted in my signature with a few specific tweaks. Plus, you have a 700 series card, and NVIDIA's latest drivers have a 700 series problem, however, that's in addition to W3's problems. Try specific fixes. Post back!

Lastly, that temp is pretty high for a 700 series card. Not damaging high, but pretty high.

I have 770 GTX also and I've been having this same problem since release. I think Nvidia has to update their driver, which they are currently in testing phase now. Hang in there brother!!

This is likely a driver problem. People have been complaining a lot about the latest NVidia 352.xx drivers.. That said, I've tried the 352.94 drivers (download link) and I haven't had any crashes with it yet, despite playing for several hours *fingers crossed.* When I had the 352.86 drivers installed, I would get crashes fairly often..

Also, make sure you have no programs or applications running in the background that use hardware acceleration, as that can promote instability with these latest NVidia drivers.

Thanks for all the replies! :)

I live in Norway, but I bought the game through Steam, so not sure who to contact then. We'll see what they answer.
I did a test with FurMark and the GPU-temperature stabilized at 80 degrees celcius. I thought that was normal for a 700-series card? My friend got a 770-card as well, and his card also run at that temperature under heavy load.

I tested with driver 347.88 yesterday, and same problem there. Going to test out the 353.06-driver now! :)

---------- Updated at 08:32 PM ----------

Played for a few hours with the new driver, then it crashed again.. :(

For the temp it highly depends of your GPU cooler system, but the cooler system of your tower too, ambiant temp + if your tower has space around.

353.06 seem ok for me but just tested a few minutes in critical places. Anyway CDPR must stabilize their game.

A quick update here; Played all evening yesterday with the 353.06-driver, and I didn't have one crash, so it looks way more stable now. but still not perfect (Since I had a crash the first evening with this driver).

Since this evening I can say the exact same thing about myself. It's crashing every 30 secs or so now.

I find weird that this only started after I went to Skellige today, only when I got there this massive crashing started. Before, in Novigrad, it would maybe crash once an hour or not even that. Same for Velen. But now it's unplayable for me with those very frequent crashes. Anyone got any idea what's going on here?

I wonder if maybe the new Nvidia driver 353.06 that I installed recently may be responsible for this... I did notice that it crashed more often ever since I put it on, even though not to the extent I'm observing now up until I went to Skellige.

I tried several different levels of graphic settings btw, none kept the crashes from happening. The game is running on patch 1.04.

My setup:
CPU: Intel i7-4790k @4.00GHz
GPU: MSI GTX N770 Lightning OC
RAM: F3-1600C10D-16GAO (G.Skill Ares 2x8GB DDR3-1600)
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro 512GB (Witcher installed on this Disk)
HDD: WD WD20EFRX 2TB
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit

Same here.

Do the devs actually pay attention to this freeze/crash problem?
It's been 2 weeks now and none of the patch change-logs even addressed this problem...
