Game freezes without entirely freezing? D:

Hey there!

I have a little problem with the game. It am using the following computer https://www.caseking.de/king-mod-rune-of-power-system-i7-4790k-4-4-ghz-gtx-980-sipc-120.html with Windows 8.1. You may know this computer, it was able to win this machine in Germany during some Witcher 3 promotions.

Today I finally installed the computer, brought everything on it up to date and installed the Witcher 3 1.05 with all DLC. The game works perfectly on 1080p with everything on the highest settings, but after around 20-30 minutes one weird problem occures:

The game freezes. But it is not the intire game that freezes, it's only the video. I noticed it when it occured the fourth time today. There it happend after I've killed some drowners. When I put the controller aside to Alt+Tab back to Windows I could hear him walking into the nearby water. Then I tried to use some attacks and signs and I could also hear him performing these actions. Waited then some time but the video did not move again. It was like looking at a screenshot while the rest of the game did still run.

Is this a known issue? Does anyone has an idea what could be the cause for it or how I can avoid it? It appears not to be bound to specific situations as far as I can tell. The first time happened during the intro, when Gerald threw this crap on the bottom. The second time was this little box fight that appears when you walk out of the Tavern right after you have started the game. Then once I was riding and once I was collecting loot from death drowners.

I would really appreciate it if someone could give me a hind about how I could fix this problem. I assume it will get a quiet frustrating experience if a hundred hour long game crashes every 20 minutes like this.

For myself, I have no idea what could cause this problem. I'm playing games since 1993 on the computer, but I have never experienced something like this before.

Thanks for your time! Hope someone can help me with this :(

A large number of people are experiencing this (especially with the latest nvidia cards), you're not alone. Even Angry Joe stated his computer has been TDRing in this game.

With such potential for negative publicity we can hope nvidia get proactive about this and either refine the drivers (if that's possible) or work out - with their partners - how to handle the return of all those videocards.

Thank you for your reply!

I never had an issue like this, so I honestly wasn't entirely sure if there might be an issue with the computer or the game. Usually games just freeze completly or close themselfs.

So as I understand it's a known problem with nVidia cards? That's funny, nVidia gives free copies of the game if you buy their cards..

Hopefully someone will be able to fix this problem soon. It's the only "good looking" pc game I currently own. Before I was more a console guy :D Would be nice to see my new computer in action for more then just a few minutes..

But I thank you for giving me this information. I saw Angry Joes review, but I thought the latest patch of the game had fixed this problem already. Guess I have to wait then. It only takes a few seconds to restart the game and load my savegame but still.. it can cause some frustrating moments, especially when I do not trigger autosaves for a while and I do not save the game every time I do.. anything. That's at the time what I'm doing. I press F5 after every step I take in the game.. it already made me kinda padanoid :D

Games shouldn't be freezing or crashing at all.

It's possible it is the current nvidia driver/card issue but you should check the usual suspects i.e. cpu & gpu temperature, and your computers memory.

Also the system is overclocked which might be causing problems.

I don't know where you stand if you won this in a competition. I assume you still have at least one year full warranty. Do you have access to caseking technical support? I would talk to them.
