Well after a 2hrs of gameplay I can confirm that uncapping the FPS in the game settings fixed it for me.

From my own experience: It seems to mostly occur when in menus. Anyone else notice the same?

Yes mine freezes in menus too. There's never a problem with just normal play but enter a menu or inventory and there's a change it freezes

If you turn off V-sync you'll get screen tearing, right? And uncapping the FPS means it'll push your card as hard as it can? Is that safe?

I can't believe the devs haven't at least jumped in here yet and said something.

i7 3.6, 32gb ram, Nvidia 680, here are the things I've tried today, after spending hours upon hours with settings in game, out of game, and on forums.

1. Rerolled Nvidia drivers back a couple iterations, each still would not fix the crashing.
2. Played around with all the in game settings, Nvidia settings.
3. Forced Vsync to be off, uncapped my fps, capped my fps at 60 and 30.
4. re-installed the game on several HDD's and two SSD's
5. Tried it without any GOG Galaxy input, and with GOG galaxy.
6. Used Nvidia Experience, used the "optimized" settings.
7. Uninstalled both GOG galaxy and Nvidia Experience.
8. and basically hundredths of combinations of things mentioned above

Pay mind to the fact that my computer was recently formatted, it's a new installation of windows 7, everything else works fine.

Going back to NVIDIA 345.20 Driver helps me. Now playing one Hour without any crashes. Try it!

Mine was fine except 2-3 freezes until the "Wandering in the Dark" mission. Now it freezes every time randomly while fighting the hounds. Tried mostly everything suggested. Can send the savegame if it helps.

This is a bizzare bug.

The game freezes, my desktop pops up, I can hear the game going about its business normally in the background, ie the sound is still going, if I move around, swing my sword I can hear all that going on, but if I try to alt tab back to the game or anything else is just closes. =/

Freezes stopped after I put power usage to performance and Nvidia 3d settings.I also locked FPS at 40 in Nvidia Inspector which fixed stutters and made game run flawlessly

AS far as I see this is not the game who is crashing but the display driver. For each freeze i have (it occur every 10min for me) I have an event in my windows event log > System log who says : "the display driver nvlddmkm doesn't answer", the game seems to continue tu run since it react to the controller (swing my sword or cast spell). When alt-tabing then the game crash.

Well, I'm just one more "Random person saying random things that may or may not apply to everyone and is possibly more superstition than logical or technological", nevertheless, I had to create an account just to say that unlocking FPS has helped me tremendously so far, allowing me to play a bit over 2 hours now non-stop, and still going strong.I have the run-of-the-mill system with 24Gb ram, 970GTX, i7-4770K, nothing overclocked, Win7 64bits, latest everything drivers as of last night when the problem started 5 minutes after the game came live.So unlocking the FPS might not be THE solution (at least for everyone), but it worked for me too.I really wish it was the solution for everyone, but I already had my three wishes a long time ago ;-)

Yeah the problem occurs for me where the game will freeze. The music keeps playing but in my task manager it says Witcher 3 has stopper responding.
This only happens to me in menus. I alt+tabbed while studying and would occasionally move around do some quests and that lasted me about 5 and a half hours. I was very, very quick in the menus if I used them at all due to being scared of a crash.
I then opened up my inventory and boom crashed. Please fix this I love this game so much but I don't want to be afraid of my inventory, haha.

I wonder nVidia makes a new video driver for The Witcher release and even do not test it properly?

I'm having the same issue, a crash to desktop with music still playing and game not responding, but more when exploring than when browsing the inventory or the menu.I've tried everything that's said on the topic page about Crash from Gog.I've tried the tips people gave in this topic (unlocking FPS, setting FPS at 40 with NVIDIA Inspector, etc.)Nothing seems to work so far.AMD FX 8320, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660, 16 RAM

Game is unplayable at this point. random minimzing the game, controls and sound still responding and I have to kill it via task manager.

i have a 660 ti, 16gb ram and an I5. Latest drivers.
Tried almost all solutions the people posted here and on reddit and it went well for 30 minutes. then I came to the first bandit camp - it crashed 3 times in this fight so far.
Please tell me you are working on a patch....

happen for me 2 times. I couldn1t even close the game. Only way was to sign out. First seemed to be random, second seemed to happen at the time geforce experience was updating optimal setting, however not sure if it has anything to do with it. Gtx 980 i7 4790 16gigs

here is the dxdiag error what followed the freeze:
