Linked to by a Breitbart article that was linked to from that Youtube video, and absolutely hilarious. A wonderful—though admittedly one-sided—remedy for those of you who are exhausted by all of this.

The Breitbart article was pure clickbait, as incendiary as it gets, regardless of the validity of the points made. That's one of the big problems at the moment with this episode - the ranting and divisive discussions are just that, ranting and divisive, but on the other hand, they did prompt some genuine investigative journalism to take place. (That video that slim linked to being an example of the latter)

Someone else exhausted by this (and pretty much where I am too right now).

Bring me a chorus of voices, of opinions. I want them all. I want a loud cacophony of differing viewpoints. Agreement is the death of creativity.

Discussion and moderation instead of forming armed camps that lionise themselves by demonising the supposed opposition, sounds good to me. However I think that the death and rape threats should be pursued, and the people who made them brought to account, and their opposite numbers who are corrupt, unethical and propagating hatred and condemnation of the majority for the sake of a minority, should also be brought to book and kicked out of the industry. Any responsible editor should be doing so, and issuing a public apology to their audience, as well as drawing up and enforcing journalistic standards to cover objectivity and impartiality.

Kain is as close to an advocate gamers have, but he's still soft balling his message. He actually proves everyone is rubbing shoulders here.

Game "journalism" is the PR arm of the game industry much like how Entertainment tonight/access hollywood/extra/etc are the PR arm of the entertainment industry.

Neither should be taken seriously.

well, what i think is gaming journalism is a deep fail. i was thinking so like 2 - 3 years ago but now it reached to the peak. obviously we, gamers, are exploited and not respected by most of them.
so i think we need a new media for gaming journalism where developers expose their work, efforts, ideas directly to gamers without intervention of journalists.

Slate actually published something halfway decent on the subject.

Good article, veleda. It would be nice to think that the backlash against the "Gamers are Dead" articles is reasoned commentary.

Talking of which, Erik Kain's latest also makes some good points:

Brilliant article. True about the game press fast becoming irrelevant. Just look at how CDPR communicates directly with the community. Why the hell would I go to Kotaku when I can get the straight answers from them?

Pretty decent article, DB. It seems he's attempting to stay neutral-ally aligned with his fellow journalists though.

I'd like to know why he doesn't think there was collusion and coordinating between all the "gamers are dead" journalists though when they were all the same basic rhetoric.

It pretty much says what we all knew. That the journalists are throwing a temper tantrum, basically. We know gamers are many and growing. It's more surprising that someone as a journalist finally said the obvious, more than anything else.

This whole recent mess of fake critics making a storm in the media reminds me this:

And if you care about your digestion, my advice is – don’t talk about bolshevism or medicine at the table. And, God forbid – never read Soviet newspapers before dinner.’ ‘M’mm . . . But there are no other newspapers.’ ‘So, don’t read any at all'.

^Pretty much. If it's trash, stop reading. Which is exactly why I don't follow "professional" gaming journalists.

I checked out the Slate author's Twitter feed. One of the "gamers are extinct" writers was protesting that his piece was referring to semantics and cultural factors rather than economic power. Ha, at least he's right about one thing.

I assumed the coordination came about at PAX. A bunch of game journos sitting around crying into their beer about how no one takes them seriously, and someone pipes up to say "we're not irrelevant, THEY ARE!" And there is a chorus of drunken hurrahs.

Only got one problem with Kain's piece there, he states that Adam Baldwin is a conservative right winger, with no factual basis other than Baldwin's having a laugh at the game journalists, retweeting a lot of stuff and not bowing down to all the threats and insults he is recieving. He's an actor for fucks sake, just because he's tall and hence gets bad guy roles doesn't mean he's a right wing conservative. Kain should redact that.

Edit: Apparently he does consider himself a small government conservative, but a commited libertarian not a right winger.

Kain cries out about the politicization of the gaming medium as a result of a recent events with the right wing joining in.

Well excuse me Mr. Kain but the issue has been politicized since the moment game media decided to focus on highly charged political issues like feminism, homophobia and racism. A chorus of more moderate reasonable voices were ignored when this happened, accused of sexism, misogyny etc when all they wanted was to not have these issues as the main focus of many game media outlets.

Game's Journalists were appeasing not moderates but to the far left of the far left and the inevitable hit back was going to occur, since like with politics there are always multiple viewpoints.

I salute these "journalists" for creating an environment as venomous and destructive as American party politics.

As always, politicization of culture is only bad when it goes one direction. Though I think Kain was lamenting that this would lead to polarization.

Adam Baldwin definitely is on the conservative/libertarian side. He regularly tweets about politics, gun rights, etc. He talked about the gaming controversies in a conservative podcast, along with Internet Aristocrat.
