Game Keeps Crashing to desktop

I am using Windows 7 64 bit.

My game keeps crashing. My PC should be more than capable to run it easily but every so often it crashes. I save a lot so I wasn't too worried. But now the crashing has increased. And there is one location where it crashes every time. I am leaving Abigail's House to go to the Crypt (in the first chapter) and every time I go up that road, it crashes.

I searched a bit and many people said to put the game in windowed mode. I really don't like windowed mode because you aren't allowed to change the gamma or rotate the camera in that mode, so I'm stuck.

Are there any possible solutions, other than putting the game in windowed mode, that might solve this crashing issue? Thanks.

Edit: I have The Witcher Enchanced Edition - Platinum Edition, and installed it from the disc.

Turn off auto save , make sure you have 3 ghz free memory when you are playin the game because this game takes a lot of ram , and I do mean a lot
If possible , lower the graphic setting
If still doesn't solve , try to meditate for a day and see if the error still exist

I turned off autosaving and it seems to be doing a bit better. I'll try meditating... see if that helps.

I have 8 gb ram, how do I know how much I have free?

I did notice one other thing... the hair and beards on everyone are twitching. Is there any way to fix that?

I`m pretty sure he was talking about the 3 GB switch which wouldn`t apply to you as that`s for 32 bit systems . Look in your witcher/system folder for am ERR/LOG TXT file an attach if one is there on your next post . Also what video card are you using for the game .

I only have 1 video card, it is a nvidia GTX 670.

There weren't any txt files in any of the witcher folders/sub folders in the main install area. I did find a log folder in my user/appdata area, but the only files there are a gfxcard.txt file which says my graphics card info, a lightfx.txt which states "No LightFX compatibile devices are present on this system." and a scripts.log file. But nothing error related.

So far it's been doing better, not sure why. I have been deleting the saved games when they autosave so only a couple autosaves are present, but I have a ton of saves that I made myself so I don't see why that would be affecting it.

Thanks for the help with this.

This game will wear out free space on your hard drive with no problems whatsoever . It`s not uncommon to have at least 2 GB worth of save on a complete run . The save system leaves a bit to be desired . Quicksaves work similar to a manual save in that instead of writing over the previous quicksave creates a new save everytime . After a while the game takes longer to load .

Another thing would be to check and see if the tages drivers are on your machine . The platinum version i don`t think has the tages drivers but it doesn`t hurt to check . Follow This link and click the 5.5 towards the bottom of the page then choose the appropriate one for your system . If it asks do you want to install the tages drivers click no and your are done . If it asks do you want to uninstall the tages drivers then click yes and after the uninstall then you are done .

I got the install prompt, so I'm tages free.

I have the game installed in my Program Files (x86) on my ssd, but my saves are in My Documents on my HDD. Has there ever been an issue with using two separate drives for this?

I did manage to get to the end of Chapter 1 without any more crashes. But the beards are still twitching. I don't mind that too much, if that's the only problem. They tend to get worse when there's fireplace lighting nearby the NPC.

7 can be kind of finicky when games are installed in program files for one reason or another . I generally tend to put physical disc install to C:\Games

But no there shouldn`t be any issues with your documents folder on another drive .
It may or may not help but you can try running the game as administrator and in compatibility mode for XP sp3

There is another fix available but i`ll wait and see if the crashing continues before posting it .

Got two crashes a little while ago. Maybe I should reinstall into another folder other than Program Files.

Would you recommend that over the other alternate fix you mentioned?

Let`s try this first . Note that it has to be followed to the letter to work properly

The issue is the one known as the IFO module error, you get that error when trying to to change zone (mostly in chapters 2 and 3).
To fix this, you need to make some manipulations, first, if you are under XP, go to my computer, get on your C drive, open the tools menu -> Folder options, View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it.
If you are under Vista, go to the control panel and look for folder option, the rest of the procedure is the same : View tab. In there, look for "Hidden files and folders", click on show hidden files and folder. Next look for "Hide protected operating system files", uncheck it.

Now, start the game, and load your savegame ( normal savegame, not quick or auto ). Once it is loaded, press ALT-Tab to get out of the game, go to the following folder:
Windows XP/2003: C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\Application Data\The Witcher\temp\saves\
Windows Vista/7: C:\User\\AppData\Local\The Witcher\temp\saves\
In that folder, delete all the files that end with the .SAV extension.

Then go back in the game, move around a bit, save your game and reload it.

If you decide to try a reinstall be sure to disconnect from the internet and then disable antivirus and UAC then install the game and then reenable av and UAC .

Should I save over the save game that I previously loaded, or should I save in a new empty slot?

Okay, did all that. There were 2 .SAV files that I deleted. I'll see how it goes. Thanks!

It hasn't frozen yet since I did this. But I'm getting some usual glitches. A few of my maps seem to be resetting. Where it will look as though I haven't explored them yet.

Also it doesn't seem to be autosaving anymore. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. But I still have the box checked. Is this normal, okay? Nevermind, it started autosaving again.

Black maps are just a sign that something is wrong and after that it will crash soon, disabling Autosaves will fix that though.

I have autosave disabled now.

Have you ever noticed that when you delete the .SAV files, that the maps reset? Is this supposed to happen. Because I lost a few of the locations on the map after doing this.

Is it related?

Something is definitely going on. I got to the Trade Quarter and I'm getting freezes again really badly. Within the first 5 minutes of starting the game. I tried using the Gamers Window Relocator to play in windowed mode, but it isn't relocating it... :(

I would delete the .SAV files again, but when I do it resets all the cutscenes, and my map looks like it is unexplored. And I get repeat dialogue.

These are my computer specs in case something is known to be incompatible with it. I'm at my wits end.

cpu: i7-3770K @3.5GHz
gpu: GTX670-DC2T 2GB 256-bit
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600
psu: 850W
SSD: Crucial M4 128 GB (running from here in C:/Games, with admin privileges - 64GB still free)
Saved games are being saved in My Documents relocated to F:/
Win 7 Pro 64bit

The Trade Quarter is a known resource hog. Try turning down your settings while you're there.

I'll try turning down all my settings. I'm starting to worry there is something wrong with my PC. I want to play the Witcher 2 after but if I'm having trouble with the first one, I can't imagine the 2nd one being possible at all...

I also have Direct X 11, would that be a problem since it was made before that came out?
