Game Repeatedly Crashes on PC v 2.3

Everything ran flawlessly for 30+ hours of gameplay. Now I'm on 'Never Fade Away" where you play through Johnny's memories after talking to Brigitte. I started crashing to desktop when in the car chase section at least 8 times.

I tried loading a couple previous checkpoint auto saves, but it didn't help.
I restarted my computer.
Validated game files through Steam.
Turning off path tracing.
Updating my driver.
Reverting to an older driver.
It still kept crashing.

Finally I tried loading an old manual save about 30 minute before the mission started and everything was working, even got past the car chase. Then further on in the mission I died, tried to load the last checkpoint and it crashed. I started the game again, continued and it crashed again...
I have the report text if that's helpful to anyone.

Can anyone help or know how I can get around this?

I had what might have been the same problem years ago and, as strange as this sounds, the order in which I destroyed the cars made the difference. When facing backwards to fire at the cars, take out the one on your right first, you'll be tempted to switch to the one that comes up next to you on your left, but finish off the one on your right first. After the car on your right explodes, it seems to do some damage to the car on your left, so now go for that one; last, get the car third car that's been behind the other two.

I hope this works for you. Again, it doesn't make any sense, at least to me it doesn't but it worked and that's how I've been handling that chase ever since. If nothing else, it can't hurt to try.

No, I've nvr modded it.

You say you have path tracing off, but do you have ray tracing off as well? If not turn that off as well.
Out of curiosity, is the crashing in Japantown?
I do not play with Ray or Path tracing even though the video card is capable, because I get crashes in Japantown if they are on.
