Since 1.05 my game now starts in 1080p despite my config file saying 2160p. Ive looked around all the files but cannot find why its starting in 1080. If i go top options and select 2160 its fine but i have to that each time i start the game.

Have you tried changing the config file to read only after changing it?

Hrm well it already was read only as I have my own settings to tweak it up a bit and I don't won't the game resetting it but I do have it backedup. I wonder if I make it writable when I start and adjust it to 2160 and then make it read only again it might work. I'll try tomorrow.

You don't need to do that, just change the resolution in the config file then set it back to read only. Your complicating it by needing to launch to change the resolution.

Edit: Forgot the title said you already set it to 4k in the config. That's odd. I heard somewhere that overlays like steam can cause bugs with your config settings. Maybe try launching without overlays and a new config and changing everything.

But it already is set to 2160 and read only. I don't know where it's getting 1080 from

Are you native 2160p, or are you downsampling?. If the latter, ensure it's actually running in exclusive fullscreen mode. Downsampling might prove to be bothersome when user borderless.

Else, I need more info.

It's definitely a settings issue then. Cut/paste your user.settings file to the desktop and run the game fresh, and set the res. (you can copy your settings back after resolving the issue).

After you've set the res, exit the game, and then restart it, and see if the res has been saved.

Patch 1.05 did something alright. It gave me a 1024*768 screen when it was installed. I had to delete my old Witcher 3 graphics settings and reconfigure everything from scratch.

Yes, patch 1.05 reset things to original settings, unlike previous patches

Yep had to do the same. Delete the old config and start fresh
