Game unplayable with lag

Yes it's one of those threads again, but I'm just as surprised as everyone else was that, while I can easily play most high end games, the Witcher 2 makes it look as if i'm using a computer from the early 90s...

I've tried putting settings on the lowest they can get, yet still the game/mouse lags like hell!

Here are my specs..

OS: Vista

Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 2.33Ghz

Memory RAM: 4.00 GB

System Type: 32-bit operating system

278 GB free HDD space

Nvidia GeForce GTX 560

so it's the game or the mouse?

What does Fraps say your framerate is?

Set your Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames to '1' in your NVIDIA driver. I had the exact same problem with an ATI card and this is a fix that works for most people.

Edit: For those reading it with an ATI card, the default Catalyst driver does not have this option. I had to install ATI Tray Tools to change it.

It's the game.

So the problem is the pre-rendered frames?

Should I even be able to run this game well with mt system specs? I kind of hoped I'd be able to, redownloading atm in order to test out the pre-rendered frame solution to my Nvidia control panel.

It would be helpful if you could post your framerate (use Fraps), so we know whether it's a performance issue, latency issue or a stutter. I believe the fix Xylon suggested is a solution for the stuttering; I don't think I can help with a performance issue (but you should be able to run this game at high settings or better, I think... just make sure ubersampling stays disabled), but there should be some around here who can; lastly, if it's latency or mouselag, I think that's a problem with the game that's never been fixed.

And just in case, latest drivers for your GPU and stuff like that is always recommended.

I have to redownload the game first, and that's going to take a long while yet, but when I've done it, i'll load it up with Fraps and find out what my frame rate is.

Whatever it is, it's going to be really low, which doesn't make sense seeing as I should really be able to run this game pretty well.

Witcher 2 is more demanding than any other game I've ever played. Recent games like DXHR, Arkham City, Skyrim, ME3, DA2, DOTA2, CS:GO all run great on my PC at 1080p with most settings completely maxed, but Witcher 2 is simply too laggy and unresponsive at this resolution, even on the lowest possible settings.

According to Koroush Ghazi's tweak guide, the only settings that have significant impact on the frame rate are Ubersampling, anti aliasing, SSAO, Motion Blur, Cinematic DoF and Cutscenes DoF. If you have all these dialed down or disabled and the game is still too laggy, the only other option is to try lower resolution. For me, it still lags at 1600x900, but it's a bit more tolerable. The main problem is when I use the mouse to turn around, there is a kind of stuttering effect, even if I have the motion blur disabled.

I tried adjusting the settings and it didn't seem to make much of a difference at all, except in the main menu, which at high settings actually lagged...the main menu lagged!

I even set every single setting to the lowest they could possibly go, but the lagging remained, which is actually the reason I think something else is up, because even at all settings lowered to their lowest levels, the framerate stayed the same...

Yep, most of the settings have almost zero effect on frame rate. If you've already disabled Ubersampling, anti aliasing, SSAO, Motion Blur, Cinematic DoF and Cutscenes DoF and it is still lagging, your only other option would be to reduce the display resolution below your monitor's native res.

Guys, he has a 560 (that's not the TI, but still). He should be able to get a decent framerate even at high settings. Even if he were able to get decent performance at low settings/resolution, I would still consider this a performance issue.

While you're checking your framerate, you can use Windows performance monitor and GPU-Z to check hard drive, memory, CPU and GPU performance as well to locate the bottleneck... not necessary of course, and as soon as you see Guy N'Wah in this thread he'll probably have the solution to your problem in no time, but that's what I would do.

Well I'm still hoping there's a reason behind this other than my PC just not being able to handle it, I'll report back tommorow when it's finished downloading and report back with the framerate, although Steam is now down for maintenence so the it'll probably take me long to get it downloaded.

It would be interesting to see if the GOG copy does the same . Unless you need to have it from Steam .

Is yours a HP system ?

Right I have news for those who are interested.

My FPS seems to have rocketed up, I'm getting about an average of 45 FPS, and this is with the graphics settings extremely high.

Now I had the same thing happen with Skyrim a few days ago, I loaded it up and my FPS was abismal, restarted my PC, and my FPS was suddenly phenominal, I can't explain why, but there it is.

Anyway to answer your questions Tommy, although it doesn't really seem to matter now, it's the Steam version and my system is a Dell if that's what you were wondering?
