Geez - it SHOULD be simpler... is it Atari?

Just when I thought my day couldn't get any worse..... here's the deal. I am a 45 year old mechanic. NOT a PC wizard. Here I am, long day, gonna go get me a game that i think looks good. Pay 50 bucks, bring it home & install... Game loads up fine. Opening cutscene - fine. Map my controls, quick look @ options, launch a game. The next cutscene is so horrible & choppy I would swear I was playing on my old Atari console! Went to the stickies, did the disc cleaner gig - no help! (yes - windows is up to date.. most recent driver from Nvidia) I really don't have the patience to "fiddle -fart" around with this thing... just want to unwind & play for Pete's sake! HINTS ANYBODY? Intel Pentium D - 2.80 Ghz 2.0 Gb RAM 512 Mb Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS (PCI - E)

You are just meeting the requirements. The Nvidia Geforce 8400 cards are not gaming cards at all. They are more for everyday sort of use in Windows, and can play some basic games. Gaming cards typically start at 800 series, though you can get by with a 600. So basically, a GeForce 7800 will run much much better than any GeForce 8400. Please check this thread -> http://www.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?topic=6990.0. Also, Pentium D's are basically two Pentium 4's and really weren't very efficient, so just meeting the Pentium 4 2.8Ghz mark.I would try cutting down the options to low and see if this makes a difference, as you should be able to play it fine at low settings, and then perhaps bring individual options up slightly to get some better quality one at a time. Otherwise, if you have done all the tips on the forums here, there really isn't too much else.

My specs are pretty close to yours: AMD Athlon 64 - 2.41GHz 2GB RAM 512MB Nvidia GeForce 7600GSWhen I started, I had the same problem with heavy choppiness. After a quick adjustment the game plays much smoother. My graphics settings are set to high but I set my anisotropic filtering to 1 and anti-aliasing to disabled. Cutscenes are a little choppy and fights near heavy particle effects slow a bit, but I'm happy with the performance and picture quality now.

Yup. Even shut off antstropic filtering & antialiasing in Nvidia control panel, as well as dropping them to the minimum in game..... Wow. technology. :wall: so the 512 Mb 8400 is no better than my 256 Mb 6800? I find that kind of hard to swallow.... not a gaming card?

I think a light bulb just went on... video card #'s are like vin #'s on cars! (maybe) I have just been looking @ the 1st number ( the 8 in 8400) - The second # (the 4 in 8400) has a lot of information as well! Am I right?....and before anybody starts slammin' me for being a dumbass, see my post in "Why the continued confusion about video card requirements?" by the Kiwi

You are right, first numbers tells you the generation of the card, which features it has. The second number tell you it`s strenght ! Higher the second number, better it will run graphic intensive apps.

Except the 8800 when it comes to Vista drivers *snigger*, then the card will start sucking its own thumb and wondering when Mommy OpenGL and Daddy OpenGL will be comming home.

Lol, as we both know, Nvidia and Vista could be a case of study and long explaination/discussion....
