Geralt Confusion (Somewhat Spoilers)

Geralt Confusion (Somewhat Spoilers)

A little confused about the events surrounding Geralt's death. What I don't understand is:

It's stated that he's slain along with Yennefer during a pogrom in Rivia then brought back to life and taken to Kaer Morhen some time after (I think). However - it's also stated that he gives his life to the Wild Hunt in exchange for Yennefer to be set free. In the intro to both The Witcher and The Witcher 2, we see a flashback where Geralt is apparently running from the Hunt and is then found unconscious and taken to Kaer Morhen.

I'm just wondering, how do the two events relate? Does he die at Rivia, get brought back to life, then get taken by the Hunt later in the timeline? Or is the whole death at Rivia just a false story created to fill in the blanks for Geralt's amnesia and his real death was at the hands of the Hunt, and then he was brought back to life?

Genuinely confused - could someone clear it up for me?

Geralt is killed by a farmer at Rivia during a pogrom, he is then (along with Yen) taken to avallach by Ciri and is then reborn. Then the WIld hunt goes woohooh.

Geralt chases them after they take Yen, and trades his life for hers after she, which the King agrees too.

Then.. amnesia.

This is all uncanon however...

Ahh okay...thank you! And that was gonna be my next question, but you answered it too. Guess this is all unrelated to the canon of the books.

There's debate over whether he actually died at Rivia; whether he was dead or not quite, he was revived and woke up with Yennefer on Avallach island. That much is canon from Lady of the Lake.

The subsequent events are in this order:
The Wild Hunt comes to Avallach and kidnaps Yennefer; Geralt returns to the Path.
Geralt, Letho, and Letho's comrades pursue the Wild Hunt.
Geralt and the witchers are unable to overcome the Wild Hunt; Geralt trades his soul for Yennefer's.
Geralt escapes the Wild Hunt and is found near Kaer Morhen.

This backstory leaves it wide open for CDPR to surprise us with any number of twists in the resolution of Geralt's tale, or even the possibility that they will leave his fate ambiguous (see High Plains Drifter for an example of how this is done well).

Gotcha, thank you!

Not sure why I wasn't able to follow it so easily. This clears up lots though and actually makes sense now.

Ah it happens mate. It was a good question nonetheless.

I do wonder what else Geralt's gonna remember in TW3. I haven't read the books, only played the games. So I'm curious to see how they'll handle that aspect. The whole amnesia trope is useful as all fuck because you can reintroduce the world to a clueless spectator inhabiting an established character/avatar. But now Geralt's gonna get his memories back so huh. I wonder what's going to happen. Can't wait! :)

Tell me about it! Haven't read the books myself, yet I'm rather interested in how Yennefer will be introduced in the next game and how the whole dynamic beteween her and Triss will play out.

Go read the books now!!! You simply don't know what you are missing!

Here is a link to community fan translation thread

http://en.thewitcher.com/forum/index.php?/topic/20967-our-community-fan-translations/

The ones published officially are easy to find on-line for free (e-book versions, obviously), but regulations do not allow me to post relevant links. Google is your friend, as always in cases like this.

READ THE BOOKS! They are so damn good, and the translations are actually good (some grammar mistakes here and there ...) But still .... Really really good :)/>

Aye mate, exactly! I'm intrigued as all hell. It feels like RED's gotta be careful with TW3 and how they handle all the new plot elements that weren't there when we had amnesia or else it could backfire and alienate people.

Of course, we could always read the books to get up to speed but the problem is...

I don't doubt it for a second. I've heard nothing but good things about them and I actually do want to read them.

Problem is, I'm not really to keen on the idea of reading an entire book on my monitor. Yes I can be petty! Seriously though, it just isn't for me. Hell, I have problems reading an article but a book! I don't know man.

Also, I want to pay for them. Besides, I'm sure that the translators did an excellent job, I'd rather have books translated to me by professionals. No offence to the awesome fans who took the time to do it. I've got nothing but respect for them. Just my own little quirks and "faults". I'd rather buy the damn thing. Hopefully some publisher will pick those babies up and share them to the world!

Maybe I'm being a picky bitch. But there's something magical about buying a book, laying down in bed and reading that motherfucker back to back, like a boss! Reading it for free, without paying either the author or the translators, I don't know. I couldn't enjoy them like that. But, that's just me.

As said above, start reading the books now! The reading order is the following one:

1. The Last Wish
2. Sword of Destiny
3. Blood of Elves
4. Times of Contempt
5. Baptism of Fire
6. The Swallow's Tower
7. Lady of the Lake

The first two books are collections of short stories, and all the other ones starting from the third one form the main saga. There are many people on these forums who prefer the short stories, but I personally like the main saga quite a bit more.

Many people believe that the fan translation of "Times of Contempt" (the only book which has both versions of the transaltion) is, in fact, better than the official one. ALso, you don't have to read the ebooks from your monitor, just buy an e-ink reader, they are quite cheap nowadays. You won't notice any real negative difference to paper books.
If you want to pay money to the publisher, buy the books which have official translations now, and then buy all the other books when they eventually come out. But don't wait for it, you're missing a lot.

Geralt said that he will take the Sihil for the last time, and that was the last time in the books, then Geralt is killed by a farmer with a spear or something, at the end Ciri and the unicorn used some magic and put to Geralt and Yennefer on a boat, everybody remember on that moment to the dead that help they on the past, then Geralt and Yennefer wake up on a strange place and amke the love...

I am not much of a reader myself, and I hate reading via computer monitor ... But it was worth it, and besides ... if you have the patience just print them out, lol

But yeah, waiting for the professional translations is good, but the books will be translated to English by 2077 at their current speed, lol

I do not like to read on the monitor, it is enough for me that I use MS Word for hours practically every day. I got kindle e-reader. Yes, it is like in the commercial - light-weight, paper-like screen, and thousands of books right here available instantly. The 3rd gen I use and like most (with the keyboard) now around $30-40 (very gently used ones).

Also if you have any tablet, or android phone (don't know about other mobile OSs) you can install any free e-reader available in any appstore, such as Cool Reader, for example.

I use Calibre to convert between e-book formats. It supports practically all of them.

http://calibre-ebook.com/

Calibre is free and very good in what it does. I found FB2 format nice for the android tablet so I convert all PDFs, and e-pubs I download into it.

Well shit. Seeing how many are suggesting to read through the books (and with all of them being online and translated in some form) I may just have to :D . But damn, computer is definitely less favourable compared to paper back.

Well, then see my vote added, just to remove the "may" from "I may just have to".
Seriously though, I'm reading them for the second time at the moment and they're even better this time! They're just so enjoyable and so full of witchery goodness! More so than for any other universe, I come to the conclusion that the more you know about it, the more enjoyable every single contributing piece becomes.

You've suckered me in, along with everyone else here! Gonna go purchase the available paperbacks today from the bookstore after work. After I burn through those (only have The Last Wish, Blood of Elves, and Time of Contempt here) I'll look to the fan translations for the others!
