Geralt of Rivia ( Spoilers from books and games )

+
"People," Geralt turned his head, "like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. When they get blind-drunk, cheat, steal, beat their wives, starve an old woman, when they kill a trapped fox with an axe or riddle the last existing unicorn with arrows, they like to think that the Bane entering cottages at daybreak is more monstrous than they are. They feel better then. They find it easier to live.”

"My first Monster, Iola, was bald and had exceptionally rotten teeth. I came across him on the highway where, with some fellow monsters, deserters, he'd stopped a peasant's cart and pulled out a little girl, maybe thirteen years old.His companions held her father while the bald man tore off her dress, yelling it was time for her to meet a real man. I rode up and said the time had come for him, too-I thought I was very witty. The bald monster released the girl and threw himself at me with an axe. He was slow but tough. I hit him twice-not clean cuts, but spectacular, and only then did he fall. His gang ran away when they saw what a witcher's sword could do to a man... "
"And I joined this fight like an idiot, not fifty miles from the mountains. And do you know why? I wanted the girl, sobbing with gratitude, to kiss her savior on the hands, and her father to thank me on his knees. In reality her father fled with his attackers, and the girl, drenched in the bald man's blood, threw up, became hysterical and fainted in fear when I approached her."

Quotes from The Last Wish of Geralt being quite the philosopher. This is the kind of character we miss out on during the games. I just miss these kind of monologues that he tended to pull off, using them as some form of expressing his inner frustration with being a witcher, or maybe just the state of the world. How he sees through people's facade of being good-willed and exposes them as they really are, monsters, just in human form.

So we escort Triss to safety to become advisor to Kovir king, and then Dijikstra said that Yennefer is colaborating with nilfgardians, and ask geralt to help him kill Radovid, and later he and Roche said to Geralt that he should help in regicide cuz Radovid is threat to mages including Triss and Yennefer.

Why Geralt don`t say WTF are you talking about Dijikstra how the hell is Radovid threat to Triss and Yennefer is he going to send assasins after them in another countries just cuz he hate mages.

Because Radovid have a to-do list
1. Destroy Phillipa's filthy mage eyeballs
2.Liberate Kaedwen from their own stupidity
3.Cleanse the filthy mage heathens of their unholiness
4.Cleanse the filthy Elf heathens of their unholiness
5.Liberate filthy Mage and Elf heathens of their money they don't need anymore
6.Liberate Temeria, Cidaris, Verden, Aedirn, Lyria and Rivia from the evil Black Ones
7.Destroy filthy Dol Blathana and its filthy Elf-mage queen
8. Liberate Cintra, Sodden and Brugge from the evil Black Ones
9.Bring love and freedom to Kovir.
10.Probably Skellige too.

It is best for Geralt to kill this clown king right away

Some of Geralt's musings about life on the path from Sword of Destiny:

"At least here some people have gathered with whom I have something to talk about. People who don't break off their conversations when I approach. People who, though they may not like me, say it to my face, and don't throw stones from behind a fence. I'm riding with them for the same reason I rode with you to the log drivers' inn. Because it's all the same to me. I don't have a goal to head towards. I don't have a destination at the end of the road."

:
11.Emhyr seems to be dead, the Empire deserves to have more experienced emperor that this little Morvran. With the help of the Gods and Eternal Fire, I am the perfect candidate to rule the whole Continent.
12.Civilize those barbarian lands on the East. It's sad that Zerrikanians and Haaks are not introduced to our enlightened culture and technical progress, we must bring the values of our manners to them.
13.Overseas countries too.
14.What about colonizing the Moon?

In conclusion, Radovid is a man of many contrasts, which is why Geralt fears him enough to commit regicide.

The severed arm elf cursed in the fountain, staring, watching his blood gush from the stump. The white-haired monster grabbed him by the hair and with a quick slash of his sword, cut his throat.

When Cahir opened his eyes, the monster was right before him.

‘Don’t kill me...’ he whispered, abandoning his attempts to rise on the floor slippery with blood. The hand that had been wounded by the gray-haired girl had stopped hurting and was numb.

‘I know who you are, Nilfgaardian.’ The monster with the white hair kicked the helmet with the broken wing. You’ve stubbornly pursued her for a long time. But you couldn’t even hurt her.’

‘Don’t kill me.’

‘Give me a reason. Just one. Quickly.’

‘I..’ whispered Cahir ‘I was the one who took her from Cintra. The fire... I save her. I saved her life...’

A bit more on witcher's elixirs: The Last Wish lists a few of the plant ingredients in Geralt's potions: Veratrum, Stramonium, Hawthorn, and Spurge. Here are some excerpts from Wikipedia:

Veratrum: Veratrum species contain highly toxic steroidal alkaloids (e.g. veratridine) that activate sodium ion channels and cause rapid cardiac failure and death if ingested. The toxins are only produced during active growth. In the winter months, the plant degrades and metabolizes most of its toxic alkaloids. Native Americans harvested the roots for medicinal purposes during this dormant period. During the 1930s Veratrum extracts were investigated in the treatment of high blood pressure in humans. The roots of V. nigrum and V. schindleri have been used in Chinese herbalism (where plants of this genus are known as "li lu" (藜蘆). Li lu is used internally as a powerful emetic of last resort, and topically to kill external parasites, treat tinea and scabies, and stop itching.

Stramonium: Datura stramonium, known by the common names Jimson weed or Devil's snare, is a plant in the nightshade family. For centuries, datura has been used as a herbal medicine to relieve asthma symptoms and as an analgesic during surgery or bonesetting. It is also a powerful hallucinogen and deliriant, which is used spiritually for the intense visions it produces. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine in India, datura has long been used for asthma symptoms. The active agent is atropine. The Zuni once used datura as an analgesic, to render patients unconscious while broken bones were set. The Chinese also used it in this manner, as a form of anaesthesia during surgery.

Hawthorn: Crataegus monogyna is one of the most common species used as the "hawthorn" of traditional herbalism, which is of considerable interest for treating cardiac insufficiency by evidence-based medicine.

Spurge: Euphorbia (spurge) is a very large and diverse genus of flowering plants in the spurge family (Euphorbiaceae). The plants share the feature of having a poisonous, milky, white latex-like sap, and unusual and unique kind of floral structures. The pressurized sap seeps from the slightest wound and congeals after a few minutes in air. The skin irritating and caustic effects are largely caused by varying amounts of diterpenes. Triterpenes such as betulin and corresponding esters are other major components of the latex. In contact with mucous membranes (eyes, nose, mouth), the latex can produce extremely painful inflammation.

Needless to say, don't try witcher's potions at home!

Stregobor's staff tapping against the flagstones. The wizard was approaching quickly, avoiding the corpses.
'What slaughter,' he panted. 'I saw it, Geralt, I saw it all in my crystal ball ..."
He came closer, bent over. In his trailing black robe, supported by his staff, he looked old.
'It's incredible.' He shook his head. 'Shrike's dead.'
Geralt didn't reply.
'Well, Geralt.' The wizard straightened himself.. 'Fetch a cart and we'll take her to the tower for an autopsy.'
He looked at the witcher and, not getting any answer, leant over the body.
Someone the witcher didn't know found the hilt of his sword and drew it. 'Touch a single hair of her head,' said the person the witcher didn't know, 'touch her head and yours will go flying to the flagstones.'
'Have you gone mad? You're wounded, in shock! An autopsy's the only way we can confirm—'
'Don't touch her!'
Stregobor, seeing the raised blade, jumped aside and waved his staff. 'All right!' he shouted.
'As you wish! But you'll never know! You'll never be sure! Never, do you hear, witcher?'
'Be gone.'
'As you wish.' The wizard turned away, his staff hitting the flagstones. 'I'm returning to Kovir.
I'm not staying in this hole another day. Come with me rather than rot here. These people don't know anything, they've only seen you killing. And you kill nastily, Geralt. Well, are you coming?'
Geralt didn't reply...

No Geralt thread should be without some mention of Geralt's mother Visenna, encountered in Sword of Destiny:

Her hair was red, flame-red, and when lit by the glow of the bonfire seemed as red as vermilion...
...
"I am, as you see, a sorceress. And a healer at the same time. It's my specialization."
...
"I received word from the customs officers that I was needed. If I'm needed, I come. It's a curious habit I have."
...
"I don't take payment from witchers. Call it solidarity, if you will. Professional solidarity. And affection. As part of that affection some friendly advice or, if you wish, a healer's instructions: stop taking hallucinogens, Geralt. They have no healing power. None at all."
"Thank you, Visenna. For your help and advice. Thank you... for everything."
He dug his hand out from under the skins and found her knee. She shuddered, put her hand into his and squeezed it lightly.
...
"Do you believe in destiny, Visenna?"
"Yes" she replied after a while. "I do."
"That people linked by destiny will find each other?"
"Yes, I believe that too..."
...
"No. Now you will fall asleep. And when you awake, you'll stop wanting. Why should we look at each other in the sunlight? What will it change? Nothing can now be reversed, nothing changed. What's the purpose of asking me questions, Geralt? Does knowing that I won't be able to answer give you some kind of perverse pleasure? What will mutual hurt give us? Not, we won't look at each other in the daylight. Go to sleep, Geralt. And just between us, Vesemir did not give you that name. Although it doesn't change or reverse anything either, I'd like you to know that. Farewell and look after yourself. And don't try to look for me..."

Apparently there is also some mention of her in Season of Storms, but I don't have a translation of that book yet. I like that fact that she lectures him about hallucinogens- that seems like a very appropriate motherly thing.

The trait they seem to have most in common is her statement "If I'm needed, I come." The merchant Geralt saved described her: "She followed right behind us, for she knew she was needed.... she took great pains over your leg, the air was crackling from all that magic, and we fled into the forest out of fear. And then there was blood pouring from her nose. I see it's not a simple thing, working magic.... She could barely stand up, she was white as a sheet. But she came to check none of us needed any help. She healed the tar maker's hand, which had been crushed by a log. She didn't take a penny, and even left some medicine. No, Geralt sir, I know what people say about Witchers and sorcerers in the world isn't all good. But not here. We, from Upper Sodden and the people from Riverdell, we know better."
Geralt too goes where he is needed, often at great personal cost, and often among populations that don't appreciate him.

Also, for the psychologists and Shani fans- a red-haired healer for a mother?

The creature didn't move.
'You like birds,' continued the witcher. 'But that doesn't stop you biting the necks of people of both sexes, does it? You and Nivellen, indeed! A beautiful couple you'd make, a monster and a vampire, rulers of a forest castle. You'd dominate the whole area in a flash. You, eternally thirsty for blood, and he, your guardian, a murderer at your service, a blind tool. But first he had to become a true monster, not a human being in a monster's mask.'
The huge black eyes narrowed.
'Where is he, black-haired one? You were singing, so you've drunk some blood. You've taken the ultimate measure, which means you haven't managed to enslave his mind. Am I right?'
The black-tressed head nodded slightly, almost imperceptibly, and the corners of the mouth turned up even more. The tiny little face took on an eerie expression.
'No doubt you consider yourself the lady of this manor now?'
A nod, this time clearer.
Are you a moola?'
A slow shake of the head. The hiss which reverberated through his bones could only have come from the pale, ghastly, smiling lips, although the witcher didn't see them move.
Alpor?'
Denial.
The witcher backed away and clasped the hilt of his sword tighter. 'That means you're—'
The corners of the lips started to turn up higher and higher, the lips flew open . . .
A bruxa!' the witcher shouted, throwing himself towards the fountain.

---------- Updated at 09:55 AM ----------

You turned Triss into the cold stone. I'm having a hard time trying to figure out: "Why I shouldn't turn you into the cold corpse?"...
