Geralt the Ghost Hunter

I was watching The Woman in Black the other day (which for some reason felt like Harry Potter and the Woman in Black), and it occurred to me that even though some of the quests involving them were really creepy, fighting the wraiths and other ghost like monsters in the Witcher 2(in my very humble opinion) was never really scary.
Now that CD projekt (god bless them) is implementing the monster hunting system it would be really cool if they drawed inspiration from movies like The Woman in Black and Mama when designing ghost like monster fights.
Something like
Geralt arrives in a village and asks to see the castellan, the villagers tell him that the castellan is in the inn drinking because his daughter was recently killed, and many kids usually disappear when playing near an abandoned house, so Geralt talks to the castellan and agrees to check it out, so he goes to the house and its really creepy and you hear subtle sounds, just as he is about to leave he turns around and see's the scariest fucking ghost a concept artist can possibly design which disappears as soon as you lay eyes on it, so the player has to figure out who that ghost was, how to draw it out , and how to appease or kill it. Having discovered its really creepy/sad/brutal backstory you make it go peacefully to the other world or fight an epic final battle with it, hopefully involving flying furniture and spine shivering screams.

So, it is pretty much In the Claws of Madness quest, only ambiance and the ghost are scarier, and more investigation involved. Sure, why not? I am for as many ghost stories as TW3 can bear.

I found the hospital mission in TW2 to be pretty scary when I played it the first time.
Apart from that I too hope for varied quests including "gothic horror" :D

Should be awesome use the new light in-game for make some scary scenes, like fight in some deep cave, with no light except igni sign, with a OST of horror or suspense

Off-topic: there is an older version of the movie, from 1989. It's not so polished and lacks cool new effects but it's scarier than 2012 version. Partly because it doesn't feature Daniel Radcliffe :) The scariest moment is when in the cemetery scene you realize that the children are all dead and the Lady is a ghost, too.

Dear fellow Witcher series fan!
Never play Witcher games in full day-light!
Start playing Witcher games at night time only, lights-off, no-one is present, except your truthful gaming companion - a cat, preferably black, - cautiously perching on top of a half-closed door (it's a known place of Force!).
These circumstances are perfect for getting as scared as humanly possible while completing In the Claws of Madness W2 quest!

Thats exactly it!! A a quest with a moment like that, or a final battle like the ending to Mama where you would have to defeat the wraith without letting it kill the hostage would be amazing!!

I actually thought Claws of Madness, its ambiance and surroundings, was scary. Even the second time. :D The backstory was also very good!

Regarding ghosts and curses I was also moved by the Heat of Day quest in Witcher 1. And whenever you fought The King of the Wild Hunt and his wraiths.

@ OP

I'd like to see that happening. Or maybe Geralt is totally alone in a castle(maybe some servants dared to stay) or mansion and he's walking around, looking at eerie pictures of past castellans. He finds out what's happening and why, learn some backstory, does some research, looks for leads and then start to commence with his witcher business. In true Sapkowski style it's not the ghost but the human who gave you the quest that is the real bad guy.

the problem with making a scary quest in W3 is that geralt is such a badass. you need to feel vulnerable to be properly scared .

THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE DONE IT. MADDER THAN THOSE HERE THEY WERE.

In the Claws of Madness is pretty spooky to me.

hard to get scared when you playing as garelt a badass monster hunter who is only purpose in life is to get paid for killing monsters, i think the Ghost should be scared from garelt.

Well, in my opinion I would LOVE to see that :") I wish they would add horror/Gothic elements in the game even at midnight in the forest why don't they let you see a passing creepy ghost and you have the option to follow it and its story or not~ just like in the Last Wish it was similar not exactly but yeah.

Or maybe like what's in the comics, it's pretty good. The House of Glass? or whatever was the name with many rooms and a ghost of a dead woman. Or in an abandoned castle in the forests. Or back to the cemeteries eerie feelings in witcher 1 the hunting music was really good.

Most of the monsters see him for first time, they don't know about his glory of a Witcher and monster slayer. It would be irrelevant to implement your idea in TW3

Actually, Geralt is so famous monster slayer exactly because no monster, ghosts included, had an encounter with him and lived to tell the tale. :) Like in RL. It is still a mark of excellence for a hitman to have his identity protected, you know. People simply shouldn't see him coming.

It is the player who gets scared, not Geralt

Not the point, you misunderstood my post.

My point is that a big part of being scared, the player needs to feel vulnerable and weak. If you control a super badass, ass kicking character its going to be much more difficult for the player to be scared.

What about something creepy, like abandoned lab of some weird mage (one certain Aen Saevherne, particullary Avallac'h, comes to mind, sorry for book!spoiler ), completely in dark, with some creatures that dug through from nearby tunel... the main source of creepy feeling should not come from monsters or darkness, but from the "what the hell happened there?/why they did this, for what purpose?" kind of source... If you played S.T.A.L.K.E.R., be it SHoC or CoP, you might know what I mean... and considering the artwork, we might even get something like that ;)
