Hadn't made a GOG account yet (no idea why not), and now I've got 15 free games, three of which are the Fallout games, 7 I got as I made the account, and another 5 were in the "free" list.

Pretty nice cheap ones there as well. Just a few € a pop.

The best part about it is how it's a huge middle finger to Bethesda.

GOG's probably going to have to remove the games from sale since the rights transfer over to Bethesda soon, and they have Steam crammed up their... er, catalog. By giving it away free, GOG's not only devaluing Bethesda's soon-to-be property, but ensuring that those who get the freebie are still able to access the download on their service (since games that are removed don't have their download links removed for those who own the game).

It's always awesome to see one of the big guys get slapped around a little by an underdog.

What rights transfer to Bethesda? The whole of GOG, or just these three games? I mean, do I need to quickly install the games or are they safe in my GOG account for the unforeseeable future?

Just the Fallout ones. Arx Fatalis was mentioned in the forums somewhere, too, but I have no idea if that's a thing or not. As far as I know, there was some legal kerfuffle between Interplay and Bethesda over the Fallout rights for some planned online game (or something along those lines), and it ended with Bethesda eventually getting the rights to the whole back catalog.

GOG is GOG and if the whole of GOG ever transferred to Bethesda, or Steam, or anyone but my beloved blues, then entire countries would be destroyed in my subsequent fury.

Yeah, I bought The Witcher 2 for 9,99. I almost felt bad. But what a bargain.
Installing it in this very moment. :)

In 18 hours great sales and giveaways at GOG will end, check them out. You can get a pack with all the DnD games they sell for $ 21 and games like System Shock 2 for as little as $ 1,49 and the Classic Dungeon Keeper for free!

GOG's game giveaways are always fun, not only because of freeee gamez, but also because of the reasons behind those games being free.

For Fallout, it was a bit of a middle finger before they were forced to remove the games from their library. Dungeon Keeper, on the other hand, is either an apology by EA or a middle finger to them (depending on whose decision it was) for their atrocious iOS Dungeon Keeper that's designed around microtransactions.

According to RPS it was an apology by EA. Interesting that they did it through GOG...

Ah-ha! You read RPS! I KNEW you'd come over!

Ironically, I don't. Not regularly.

EA and GOG have a surprisingly tight working relationship. I mean, they released the expansion packs to a bunch of EA's games for free (including Alien Crossfire for Alpha Centauri, the rights of which were a hopelessly tangled web by all accounts). They may be an evil corporation that's trying to ruin gaming, but they seem to be pretty decent when it comes to their back catalog.

Or maybe they all hate DRM-free and that kind of thing is just their way of hurting the people who work for them. Because evil.

Mutter. mutter. I can't believe I fell for that.
And do NOT. It's just that it's on my RSS feed and I occasionally click on something by accident.

Of course. Of course I understand. No need to explain at all. I, too, am a secret fan of their clever wordages and journalistic purveying.

Let us join together in celebration of our RPS "RSS" feed.

Come, one and all! Join hands and recite the RPS prayer:

John Walker in RPS,
hallowed be your journalism.
Your news posts come,
your will be done,
in games, as it is in your mind.
Give us this day our daily controversy,
and forgive us our sexism,
as we refuse to forgive more sexism.
And lead us not into sexism,
but deliver us from sexism.

Amen.
