GoG Save File Question

Hey hey, quick question. I just bought the Witcher Enhanced Edition Directors Cut on GoG... BUT... I ordered the Collector's Edition of The Witcher 2.So I'm curious, will my save file from the GoG Witcher be compatible with the Witcher 2 on disc retail version? (I am referring to the save file transfer process)Thanks for any answers you can toss me way! Love these forums, love the devs, 7 days away baby!

Since this is not Steam with their devillish schemes... a save is a save is a save. No reason to be incompatible. Or un-moddable, or whatever. ;)But I doubt you will play TW1 in only a week...

I do own the game on disc and HAVE beaten it twice already (albeit back in 2007-2008) but the disc is scratched up and I don't want to deal with the whole patching/windows 7 thing... so I just bought the $5 GoG version. I know what to do, so I'm pretty confident I can replay the game in time ;)That said, how does GoG work in terms of patching? Do I need to manually install the 1.5 patch??? Or does it do it automatically?PS- Thanks for the quick answer!

I think GOG has the most up-to-date version, so you shouldn't need to patch it; it should be ready to roll as soon as it's installed.

Just one last thing, for future reference and all, with GoG games I DO need to manually install patches that are released after I download the game right? Unlike, say, Steam where they are automatically downloaded through the program. And if I do need to manually install them, is it like D2D, where I need a patch specific to GoG or can I just use the same generic patch people who own the disc would use.

Witcher 2 is going to have a update game function, no automatic patching though. With all other GoG games, those games are already fully patched, and the games are to the point where they get no more support from the developers/publishers of those games, so no new patches anyways.

GoG doesn't modify executables, like Steam does. This means that the digital game is exactly the same as from DVD - only already completely patched in the Director's Cut, in case of TW1.So that would mean that you also use the same patches. But I guess there's no more TW1 patches. For TW2 they give a key, with which we can register the game same as you with the retail version. According to current informations, TW2 can only be patched through the registered game. Same for retail and digital edition.

There is no devilish scheme on Steam. They all use the same save file format, and are all compatible with each other, except that on Steam some games offer the ability to store your saves on the Steam cloud so even if you format your PC or something happens, Steam will re-download your saves, I believe The Witcher 2 is going to use the cloud storage but the first game doesn't.

This is not a Steam discussion, but to clear up what I meant: Steam changes executables, which is very bad for modding games. For me, part of being a pc player, is being able to mod my game and Steam games are not easily modable, if at all. So much for compatibility.I may be perfectly chaotic - but my pc is very well organized. When I format my c: drive, all that gets erased is Windows and installed programs. All my data, including savegames, are securely on different drives. And get backed up periodically. Plus, I don't need anybody looking over my shoulder when I play a game (baaaaaaaad experience with one and only Steam temporary stupidity).

I think TW1's version is already up to date, same with other games on GOG, but you certainly can apply patches to them.

The GOG version is fully patched and uncensored. All TW1 versions save to the same directories and I guess that is exactly the place TW2 will look for the saves.e.g. on Win7 it is:My Documents\The Witcher\saves

Only game I've had trouble with modding is GTA4 due to the updates. Heck the only problem Steam has with mods are when mods need a specific version. I've had no issues with modding otherwise and I mod quite a few games.Anyways I have no idea what this has to do with saving. Steam doesn't do anything special with save files.

But Steam is the Devil!! Didn't you know?!? On a serious note, yeah I just dug up my nearly 3GB of Witcher 1 original playthrough saves from a backup and plopped them back in the save directory, loaded up The Witcher and it recognized and loaded them fine.

Oblivion, anyone? Script extender and Steam don't go together. And Oblivion without OBSE is like thousands less hours spent with the game.

That may be right (I wouldn't know). But companies like Steam (and others) are the reason why user wonder about compatibility of save games and game files in the first place. That wasn't even a question before.
