Graphic downgrade

Ooo, that upper one is pretty. Has some ethereal feel to it.

Yes, I wish I could find some balance between the hardness of the history and the different environments and regions for which Geralt move. And more considering that the player should not visually tiring over those 100 hours of play.

So here's my conclusion.

There is no downgrade between the 35 min. footage and PAX/GDC.

Actually it does seem to be a difference when it comes to foliage.

It is especially clear in the link below
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlq2t91ZUGw#t=12m49s

Nowhere in the PAX trailer does it ever reach that level of quality. Though the grass in the 35 demo seem to react less to the player but the PAX grass while being more interactive also clips trough everything (buildings, rocks etc).

Hi, how do you add the sharpening filter? I would like to watch 35min demo using that filter. Thanks

Good idea. I just watched the Royal Wyvern clip with sharpening on just a few notches higher and liked it a lot better.

I use VLC player, just open the clip and click the settings tab. I'd imagine Zoom Player has the same feature too.

I think there was also a blue filter (another effect that doesn't concern performance) in some of the earlier shots, not just sharpening, which added more to the "grittier" feel.

Yeah absolutely, and the change of colors, even the renderer is probably different, but I wanted to explain how just the sharpening filter can change the image by itself, aside from art direction.

When the game comes out, im going to change colors and saturation by myself, and activate the REDengine3 sharpen filter (if its still there), to go half-way back to the original look.

@Mezziaz

If you're talking about when Johnny sings his song and the grass is awesome, watch this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=c514jP4hbJI#t=290

when the camera gets near the ground, the grass in the bottom of the screen is very similar. Let's keep in mind of course that in the scene you posted there's simply more grass, and light doesnt aim directly at the camera eliminating most shadows thanks to the translucency effect of plants in TW3, but my point is that its comparable.

I can easily see those two scenes being from the same game and the same quality, its possible its not, im not certain of anything, but its a minimal difference.

Alright. Made a quick comparison using the uncompressed video from 35 min. gameplay

Top is with a sharpening filter, bottom is original

There is a significant difference when looking at details up close

now i am really confused... i didn't know one filter applied can cause THAT much of a difference.

Those don't even look like the same game, the difference is colossal.

It seems like everything is evenly lit in the latter footage, to conceal the inadequate shadows. In the first capture I can see individual blades of grass, individual leaves, the slates on the roofs are uneven, you can see shafts of light coming out of a door.

Honestly I feel like i'm being trolled at this point when someone claims the latter footage is better than the former. :rly?: I have to believe that.

[Edit] Updating first post with new ones

[Edit2] fixed the problem

nice scenes to remind how good it looked

That mp4, where is it from ? I do not remember this shot (in this color) in any of the trailers. Debut trailer had a shot like this, but with greenish colors.

Anyway, if the game ends up looking nothing like SoD trailer, I will be a bit disappointed, I admit.

don't know, found it in polish thread, no source there :/

I thought I would use a bit of time to explain my worries with the change that I perceive when comparing the VGX/SOD to newer material. To start of let me make it clear that I am no graphics expert and graphic fidelity is easily lost on me and I never ever buy or don't buy a game for graphics alone.

However what I spot immediately is atmosphere, color balance, art direction and so on. Things like that can completely change the mood and feel of the game and either ruin it or make my day. That is what I believe have happened when I watch the older material compared to the newer. I of course realize that this issue is subjectively and what tickles my stomach might have a negative impact on others.

I would like to use two screenshots that have been posted numerous times in this thread and others to get my points through. I could have used many more comparable screenshots but it would just be a repeat of the same points I will make with the two I choose.

First up:

Now this image is from the VGX trailer and to me this just captures the mood of the world of the witcher as I imaging it - dark, gritty, mature and very REAL.

Here to me the world feels alive and real, there's trade, entertainment, talking, working, dealing and so on. It's a world I want to explorer. I want to see the market and what is in store for me. I want to know what the people are talking about, I want to see where the man is walking with the sack, I want to watch the scenery and enjoy it. In other words I want to dwell into this world and get lost. My curiosity have been awaken.

However the mood also make me think and "worry". I feel uneasy and unsettled. My senses and nerves are alerted. I get the sense that the ground is muddy and dirty. It soaks through my boots. This world for all the "fun" I just mentioned is also grim, unforgiving, hard and in chaos from the ongoing/oncoming war. People are worried and discussing the events unfolding around them. I can feel it. They are worried. I sense danger could be lurking in the dark. I feel I better keep my eyes open and stay alert.

And I could go on but the point I am trying to make is that this scenery to me speaks IMMERSION. I want to play, I want to go on, I want to know and so on. The atmosphere is complete.

This image is from the 35 min gameplay demo. Here the mood completely changed from the above. It is no longer dark, gritty, mature or as real. Instead it feels more "happy", more cartoonish, more childish.

Let me underlined that I don't think its bad or ugly, because I don't and I am still impressed by the level of details and so on.

It's just that those feelings I had of wanting to explorer, wanting to know what happens around every corner, the feeling of being on my toes are much less. I don't feel unsettled. I don't feel worried. I don't feel the world reflects the turmoil it is in. The atmosphere has completely changed.

In other words to me this isn't as immersive and believable as the VGX/SOD.

And that is what worries me in regards to this issue. The lack of connection to the world because of the lost in atmosphere I felt existed in the older material and so far haven't been as profound or near to the same level in the newer stuff.

I think.... I just came

http://a.pomf.se/yosdwc.webm

oh my god this looks amazing

It's quite fascinating how some trees in the very back on that mountain are still moving in the wind. Aside from that there is, from what I see, no perceivable difference in vegetation textures.

And that water puddle!
The trees in the background, in my opinion of course, look very very similiar to the "downgraded" trees that we saw in the PAX footage. Coincidence that those trees really only have ambient lighting?

Dat grass indeed. Looks amazing. Pay attention to the fire's after effect texture projected above the grass. Looks really good from that perspective at the front of Geralt, once you look behind him though, you see it hovering above the grass quite a bit. Kind of cracked me up.

Aside from these nitpicks :look:, indeed jaw dropping.
