Graphical difference from reveal to launch and TW3

So lately I have seen more and more comparison video's on games that look different when they are released and when they are revealed. Now normally you would say that this is normal, but the quality usually gets better and not worse.

As example: we had the Aliens: Colonial Marines, Watch Dogs shows a lot of difference in their trailers and I believe I've seen some comparison screenshots from Infamous: Second Son. Even Dark Souls 2, but then again the version we saw in the trailers will hopefully be the pc version.

But I think my point is clear, there are games out there that show great graphical quality in their trailers and demo's, or have shown, but at release they don't even come close to what was shown previously. Now I have every confidence that CDPR won't pull something like this. And we have seen the screenshots of TW3 in different builds and it keeps looking better and better. But still I'm curious how developers can do this? Show a beautiful game at E3 or any other expo's and release a game, that often, doesn't look like it.

I don't know if this has been discussed on these forums already, I'm sorry if it has. I don't even know if general is the right place to post this.

Well, unlike most titles out there, Witcher 3 actually improved from one trailer from the next. As for why devs do this, it's to create hype around a title, that's all modern titles are nowadays, hype. It's a damn shame.

I moved it here because it's more towards videogames as a whole than Witcher 3 related, General Discussion is for Witcher related discussion as the little line right below the subforum name shows.

EDIT:
I can tell you I've noticed 'downgrades' in most Ubisoft titles in the past 6-7 years and I mean both graphical and mechanical so it was really no surprise for me.

And a lot of devs do it because most consumers are fine with it. They don't notice most of the time. And since they're showcasing the game they can do a lot of stuff - Run it on a PC with maximum possible fidelity, bullshots, pre-rendered fake 'gameplay'.

In the end, multi-plat games will be scaled back to support the lowest denominator among the platforms.

In my years of gaming I have seen this done a lot of times. it what you see is not what you get
in short its also has to do with not only the Dev but also the Publisher wanting the game out on such and such date
and not giving any time to polish it. and try to stay in some kind of budget
or even when they Devs put out a game that they feel its ok thinking that fan will buy it no matte what.
with the idea they can fix it when its out which is not always the case or not the case at all
thats just my take on it,

As Kinl3y mentioned, Witcher 3 keeps looking better every time they show it. Compare the screenshots alongside the Game Informer reveal to the VGX screens/trailers and be amazed.

Battlefield 4 would like to have a word with you.
