Griffin

Am I the only one who has conflicted feeling with killing Griffin in latest demo(I don't know if the mission is part of main quest, but I think it is)
Now, I know Geralt haven't mentioned it as one of creatures he does not kill, but this one sounds like a hunting mission, not for the witcher.
Also he fights him with steel sword, getting silver one only when he has no choice, that video reminded of Grand Master's end from Witcher.
Sorry if the question was already asked, could not find.

About the Steel sword, it was explained by the developers, that the Griffin is not a monster that came into the Witcher world, with the Conjunction of the Spheres. It was there before that, so a silver sword is not needed to kill it. Geralt took out his silver sword, because he was disarmed.

Either way, Geralt was sent to hunt the Griffin, because he needed some very important information from the man that sent him to do so. I don't think Geralt would kill the Griffin anyway, if it was not a threat to humans. Even it might be the only way he could get the information he needs.

We don't really have the details on the quest. Maybe the griffin is deranged and started killing people. It was munching on a horse in the demonstration, that must have been someone's horse.

Also he uses his steel sword because the griffin is a pre-conjunction creature, so it's not susceptible to silver. So using his silver sword would be pretty useless. He just uses it at the end because his steel one got knocked out of his hands. Plus it's a "cool" way to end the presentation (which is probably the main reason why the devs chose to do that). :p

Thanks for reply.
It's exactly as you two say: "Griffin is not a monster that came into the Witcher world, with the Conjunction of the Spheres".
Now, I don't remember the books, but weren't witchers created to fight creatures that came to the world after the Conjunction of the Spheres?

Well, that is when the need for witchers started to rise, but that doesn't mean that they were not hired to killed beasts that terrorize humans, even if they were Pre-Conjunction. You could hire a witcher to kill a large wolf for example, if nobody else can kill it.

As StaGiros said, this quest has to do with Geralt getting information most and foremost, the monster hunting aspect is secondary. And if the griffin is causing problems, I see no reason why Geralt would not accept this particular contract, especially since he's getting vital information.

You know? A lot of problems of Humanity is that some people make a whole conclusion from a grey assumption and start to spread malicious rumors..... ehemmmm

Well, Geralt returns the Griffin's head to Djikstra, so maybe the spy wanted it as some kind of trophy over his bed :p

Exactly. In the E3 demo, you can see the body of a dead man, and if I'm not mistaken, Griffin was eating an horse.

I confirm that the corpse on which the griffin was feasting was human.

In the W2 we saw witchers being hired to kill Kings. So hunting a Griffin is not a big deal if the right payment is promised to a witcher. In this case Geralt is looking for Ciri and that information is vital.

I think the man that the Griffin had killed was probably one of Dijkstra's information couriers, maybe the Griffin had its hunting-grounds along the path that they would take from the south or whatever.

Because witchers haven't a code or some moral precepts.

I also mentioned this on behalf of the CE figure since I myself had doubts why geralt would kill a griffin..
But it turned out that I had a false conception of a griffins behavior... griffins would indeed attack horses or humans..I had mixed feelings about the figure because at first I thought It doesnt fit the lore... but it does .. I guess the image of that harry potter griffin just stuck with me :-D ... so yes griffins can cause trouble for humans... so its not unlikely for geralt to go on a hunt.... they are territorial creatures.. that attack stuff in it .... and they like to expand their territory which can cause trouble... hope that clears it ;-)

I actually happen to like griffins, so I wouldn't mind to have an alternative to killing him, like, for example, giving the griffin a love potion and sending him on a search for she-griffin (more work and money for us later :) ), artifact-compressing him into a nice mantle ornament to be gifted to Yen (or Triss, if you are into her), persuading him to become a vegetarian by feeding him someone nasty, or something else. I would go with artifact-compressing and gifting to a woman I love. :)

According to Yennefer, artifact compression is an incredibly cruel thing to inflict on someone/thing.

Would be cool if we could get some additional loot from it though, maybe some of its organs could be used in alchemy or sold to people in a city.
