Happy vs Unhappy endings

  • The game should have both happy endings (everyone lives) and unhappy endings (Geralt dies).

Couldn't vote for any of these options, because in this poll it's implied that a bad ending=Geralt dies. I can imagine many other possibilitys of a bad ending without Geralt dying, I hope there will be a variety of endings depending on our choices without any extremes no matter if they are good (the bad guy dies, the heroes prevail and live a long and happy life) or bad (Geralt dying). Actually I hope there won't be a ending in which Geralt dies, because I hope they will reconsider a Witcher 4 with him as the protagonist.

Satisfying ending, please. Doesn't matter if it's happy or not, as long as it makes sense.

Every ending is happy ending - as long as Cirilla dies...

I'm not sure if the possibility of Geralt dying will affect his chances of being the protagonist of W4. The main problem is that after reuniting with Ciri, dealing with the Wild Hunt and the White Frost, finally getting together with Yen or Triss, and just saving the world in general - there won't be many reasons for Geralt to get involved in every single conflict. Not to mention that he keeps saying that he's "too old for this". That is, unless the ending of W3 will set-up yet another adventure. And... I'm not sure if that won't cheapen the actual ending, to be honest.

In certainty, the ending has to be good regardless if it's happy or unhappy. When I said 'good' I meant satisfying, fulfilling, complete, etc.

Actually CDPR recently said "Geralt deserves his retirement" .. could be a hint he wont die. But thats speculation right now.

Honestly.. he died already.... so i dont know..... I think there should be both variants...a "good" ending where he Lives and he Yen and maybe Ciri go back to theit island. and some endings where things go wrong depending on our choices.

I would apploud CDPR if they managed an ending like ME2(not 3!!!!!) where youre actions REALLY make a profound difference at the end. As long i at the end have the feeling that I really did all this and its clear MY choices really made a difference i am happy.

Actually neither TW1 or TW2 had happy/unhappy endings so I assume that would be the case for TW3.
we could say that there were better or worse endings but that was totally depend on the player's perspective and personal feelings. for example the best outcome in my opinion could be a terrible one from the eyes of another player.

I hope that the ending is bittersweet. There needs to be both loss and hope to make a truly great ending to any story. I don't want either a truly happy ending or a complete tragedy. The witcher series is all about shades of grey, and I would expect the game's ending to be the same.

Edit: Also CDPR have already said a bunch of times that you can continue to complete side quests after the main quest is finished. That means some avatar for the player will continue to live after the main quest is complete. The only possible alternative to Geralt would be to have you play as Ciri to my knowledge. However, that doesn't make sense with the information we have because we know that Ciri will not have much in the way of RPG mechanics (leveling, etc) and we have been told we can only play as her during 10 or so hours of linear style main quest centric missions. So that makes me very confident that Geralt will live.

The Witcher universe have always been about GRAY or said in other words you can try and do everything in your power to do the "right" thing or go for what you believe is the lesser evil option and yet further down the road you learn that the choices you made with the best intentions had some unforeseen and dire consequences for some or yourself (Geralt).

As such a happy/unhappy ending in The Witcher would go against the philosophy of the entire universe and it won't happen as it should imply that throughout the game there will be clear key point choices were you can pick good vs bad or happy vs unhappy.

And a happy vs unhappy end? Come on. Shouldn't it be about the journey to the end of the game that matters than the end itself?!? As such I much rather have a hell of a ride throughout the game where I am put on the spot and have to make some morally and difficult "gray" choices that don't have a happy/unhappy feel to them but have consequences I have to accept and live with. Just like in real life.

Whether Geralt dies or not in the end is of no consequence to me as long as I mention I had a great time during the game.

Anyway if you want that kind of game that have a happy vs unhappy ending I believe you have the wrong franchise. There are no such thing as a happy ending accept in the brothels of course.

There are so many World States that the world can be in at the end of the game depending on your choices and I would HOPE one of those can be relatively good ending where all of Geralt's friends live..even if everything else burns (to outweigh the pro's).

For me it depends on the type of game. A big rpg, or indeed any game, with many choices and multiple endings should make use of them to create as many outcomes as possible. After all, why have several endings if they're pretty much the same but with....er....different colours. Ahem.

However, for games with a single ending and a very controlled and specific story that the developer wants the player to experience, I'm not fussed about whether it's happy or sad.

EDIT: Oh, and I'm a bit confused with the whole 3 endings (epilogues), 36 world states thing. I assumed 3 endings with regards to Geralt and maybe a couple of other main characters? The world states I assumed would be differences in smaller details.

I've read people on other sites seemingly expecting 36 vastly different endings. I think that might be an unhelpful, and potentially backlash producing, misunderstanding. Unless of course there really are 36 very different endings in which case I'm mistaken and happy to be so :)

I have been happy with the ending I got in both TW1 and TW2, they were not sunshine and rainbows but satisfying. I had to make a choice, which let to both good and bad, but I could always find my own justfication for the choices I took. I hope the ending in TW3 leaves me feeling the same way. A sad ending for me would be Geralt loosing everyone he loves, after just finding them again, not necessarily Geralt dying.

F*ck heroic sacrifices or death of main character - (spoiler from the Mass Effect series)
Mass Effect 3 proved that it's a bad idea to kill off the main character after so many adventures and bonding with your shepard.
I want Geralt to live with his woman of choice, HE DESERVES IT after everything that happened in books and 2 previous games.

Killing him off after he endured so much (even "death") would just be comical at this point.

I guess I expect there will be both possibilities, with a lot of grey in between the good and the bad. Though I hope that the more time, effort and energy you put into the game, the better the end results. I would be seriously unhappy if I spend hundreds of hours helping Geralt's friends, prepping them by completing quests and whatnot, only to learn it's all futile.

EDIT: By the way
I'm guessing Geralt won't die at least, as devs have said that you could return to finish quests after main story.

Don't know why I put that within spoiler tags. ^_^

I don't know. I was pretty happy(with my choices) at the end of Witcher 1 and 2. I assume my Geralt was as well.

Pretty much me as well. I did all this, spend COUNTLESS hours doing the best i can... and my hero DIES?? WTH!!

And for those who mentioned CDPR stating that Geralt can still do X after the main quest is completed - Mass Effect 3 you CAN continue to do whatever you want AFTER the main quest is completed...

...where your character DIES.

As i have said before, the game simply saves before you pass the point of no return. Once the main quest is completed, the game loads that save game giving you the option of replaying the final chapter or completing anything you have not yet done yet, like DLC.

For me, Ithlinne's Prophecy of ice age and extinction of humans (and preferably of all life) on the Continent would be a happy ending.
