Happy vs Unhappy endings

Happy vs Unhappy endings

  • The game should have both happy endings (everyone lives) and unhappy endings (Geralt dies).

  • This is the final chapter for Geralt. A heroic sacrifice would be better than ''retirement''

Although I agree the death of the protagonist scenario is overused, I must disagree that all cases are meaningless and unnecessary.

There are contexts where it makes complete sense and it carries a true emotional impact like in Red Dead Redemption.
The government coming after Marston at the end was inevitable, because they sent Marston after all the others and he himself was the last one left. The player knows Marston has no way out, because they would sent people after him and his family even if he fled to Mexico. So he would have never been able to have the quiet life that he wanted with his family. He does not want to put his family's life in jeopardy, and he is not someone to go to prison. The fact that you get to live the life he dreams for the last hour of the game makes the ending even more meaningful and emotional. I UNDERSTOOD why Marston made the choice that he did.

On the other hand you have Mass Effect's ending which uses the death of the protagonist as a disgusting and lazy way to end the trilogy, because it makes zero sense and to be honest I did not feel emotional at all. Instead I muttered "What kind of horse shit is this" in anger. You get to the end, then there is this little kid out of nowhere that gives you three choices which all mean you die and produce a different color. That's just ridiculous.

I am not against Geralt dying, but I want it to make sense if he does. But I do not think he is going to die. I think we'll have a endings like in Witcher 2, where none of them were good or bad.

Sorry to be insensitive but It is a 4 years old game.

Easily the best game from Rockstar. Wish it would come out on the PC.

I'm confident CDPR will treat the source material with respect. Their level of commitment on all the aspects of the game so far leads me to think the same in regards to the story. Also I have yet to be disappointed with their work. W1 and W2 have some of the best game stories out there, which was especially impressive with W1.

Takes all of 10 seconds to be considerate to others. All of the spoilers i have stated for Mass Effect 3, have been enclosed in spoiler tags. The age of something should not determine whether being considerate is required.

Back on topic - Does anyone have any firm information on the status of the main characters in the books? I have heard a vague ''gone somewhere, never to be heard from again'' but that is all.

(one day i fully intend to read the books, if the stories in the games are just as good as)

For me, Ithlinne's Prophecy of ice age and extinction of humans (and preferably of all life) on the Continent would be a happy ending.

Don't get your hopes up. ;)

Because you know...life...uhm, ah, eh, finds a way.

In this particular case the result would be these little darlings:

Happy ending indeed.

Yeah really hope they don't go for the tired notion of forcing Geralt's death.
I'd like there to be both the option for him to die and to live personally.
I'd like the option of their to be some personal happiness for Geralt whether that be with Yen/Triss/or by himself.
I assume all the endings are going to be various shades of grey, so hopefully we can get small victories in there.

I don't really like happy endings, because in many cases, at lest in the type of stories used in games it's unrealistic. I pref endings in shades of grey or unhappy. What I desire most of all is a well written ending, and ending that makes sense, and not something that the writers pulled out of their asses, but I'm not concerned that CDPR will pull something like that. I'm confident that they have the level of skill to write an amazing ending that is very well written.
