Although I agree the death of the protagonist scenario is overused, I must disagree that all cases are meaningless and unnecessary.
I am not against Geralt dying, but I want it to make sense if he does. But I do not think he is going to die. I think we'll have a endings like in Witcher 2, where none of them were good or bad.
There are contexts where it makes complete sense and it carries a true emotional impact like in Red Dead Redemption.
The government coming after Marston at the end was inevitable, because they sent Marston after all the others and he himself was the last one left. The player knows Marston has no way out, because they would sent people after him and his family even if he fled to Mexico. So he would have never been able to have the quiet life that he wanted with his family. He does not want to put his family's life in jeopardy, and he is not someone to go to prison. The fact that you get to live the life he dreams for the last hour of the game makes the ending even more meaningful and emotional. I UNDERSTOOD why Marston made the choice that he did.
On the other hand you have Mass Effect's ending which uses the death of the protagonist as a disgusting and lazy way to end the trilogy, because it makes zero sense and to be honest I did not feel emotional at all. Instead I muttered "What kind of horse shit is this" in anger. You get to the end, then there is this little kid out of nowhere that gives you three choices which all mean you die and produce a different color. That's just ridiculous.
