Harpy contract - worth it?

I'm a bit surprised about the harpy contract. So I need 7 harpy traps, which equals 7 silver ore. Considering I have only two of those quite rare pieces I figure it will cost me quite a bit to make all the 7 traps.

The question is: Will I get more out of the contract then I've invested into it at the end?

/edit: Just read in the wikia that I get 200 orens for it. Well I already payed more for the harpy trap receipe. Isn't this a bit...uper-stupid?? -.-

No, it sounds like a typical witcher contract. Witchers are used to just barely getting by, or sometimes losing money on their work.

Also, "Book Geralt" probably would have come up with a barter deal to get the silver and get the traps made. Game Geralt doesn't have that flexibility.

Ha, trying to get me by my witchers honor, eh? Well, let me tell you boy...it worked.

And to be honest I did not count in all the incredients I might sell, since I could never possibly use them all for making potions. Well I could, but I usually keep a stock that suits my needs and not more. ^^

I might get out of this with at least a little gain after all...

I think you get something like 5 orens for each harpy feather. A run up and down the quarry a few times should net you at least 500 orens worth.

You can kill harpies, and get the ingredients, without destroying the nests.

At a meta level, you're trading orens for XP. Is that worth it? Depends how much you need the orens and whether or not you want to level up. :)

Regarding the cost of the diagram, there's a lootable one at a certain stage in the game. I'm not sure if spoiler tags are working yet, so if this doesn't work, the cryptic clue is "Crypt. Bodies"

on one of the bodies in the crypt where you find the Dun Banner

Well, what can I say...I made a little fortune. I found something near to 200 harpy feathers (sold 12 + 60 + 8 to that guy which I will no doubt visit again later *g*) and even sold other materials + things I found. I'm currently somehwere at over 2200 orens - before the harpy contract it was 500.

Granted, without the crafting materials / diagram I would be even richer...but then again, seeing those harpy nests blow up was worth it. Definitely.

Well...my Geralt is a good guy. I opened one corpse sack, luckily it was the "right one" if you know what I mean. But I left all the others alone.

Heh...I guess that's the price of neutrality. [/bad play on words]

I just hope you gave some of those harpy feathers to Eltron. I still love that little lol-quest :)

Like I said, I sold 12 + 60 + 8 to "that guy" and will visit him later. :D I also kept some for act III. The rest I sold. It was still worth a little fortune. ^^

I finished that quest today and still had Cat from my run through the mine. Seeing Eltron through the wall, all decked out in feathers - it shows the downside of x-ray vision :D

Is this on Roche's playthrough? If so, where abouts?

Nope, it's not playable on Roches path. But don't be disappointed...the two largely different paths are one of the best things about this game! A second playthrough holds more than just a few changes, it holds a totally different second act.

Plus there are definitely very very cool quests and great moments on both paths. :) There is no single best, they're both great. ^^

If we're still talking about "A Sackful of Fluff", it IS playable on Roche Path. You can do it at the mid-way point when you cross the mist. You can't do the Harpy Contract though.

(You don't think they'd leave out such a vitally important quest, do you?)

Oh, yes, thought it was about the "Harpie Contract", which is only playable on Iorveth's path. But "A Sackfull of Fluff" is fun for everyone.

So, I go back across to Vergen, and have a gander for him? I did the "Blood curse" part were you and Zoltan go over, but I can go back, yes?

You cannot cross the mist again once you have crossed back. But you do get one more chance, near the end of the act when you go with Roche to Vergen. Exactly how you rationalize telling Roche "wait here while I go sell this weird dude some harpy feathers" is up to you.

^ thats weird, i was able to go back into the mist, near the shipwreck..i quickly decided this was a bad idea, and was able to cross back, dragging several skeleton swordsman and wraiths with me, near the "battlefield" section of vergen, the townsfolk helped me slaughter them.

im on the iorveth branch, maybe not getting back out only applies to the roche path?

anyway..is the harpy quest glitched?

theres only 2 places i know of that they spawn.

1 being the spiraly quarry. 2 being higher up, going around from the other side.

initially, i got 4 of the little bastards to grab traps, and blow up 4 nests..

then i gathered all the feathers for the "collector" guy. a sackfull of fluff.

ever since completeing it;, even if the harpies do pick the traps up, they arent blowing up nests; with them in their possession?

what am i doing wrong? theres no way to make/ buy lures for these harpy traps either, that i have found, in vergen anyway.

edit= ok, i found this: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/975399-the-witcher-2-assassins-of-kings/59167771

i guess i just have to find it now, does this mean i can still kill the queen harpy? i found an entrance in the quarry (glowing red, like a quest item) but i need a key.

where do i get it? where are these illeged "harpy caves" from the gamfaqs link?

this is not mentioned in the quest guide included in the EE, or i wouldnt have to ask.

There are 7 nests in all, and these are the only ones you can blow up. 4 are outside the cave (3 in the quarry, one on the path between the troll's lair and the shipwreck), and 3 are inside the cave.

On Roche's path, you cannot get into the harpy cave. You need to advance a quest that is only on Iorveth's path and then talk to a character you cannot get to on Roche's path.

On Iorveth's path, you need to advance "Hunting Magic" before you can persuade Cecil Burdon to give you the key to the harpy cave.

thought i was screwed.

so, to some up: after the first 4 nests..

must finish subterranean life, & advance some of hunting magic..to finish all 7 nests.

not a bug. thanks.

Worth it in terms of orens? No, but worth it if you enjoy that kind of thing, like I do.

In the end it was worth it, even in terms of orens. The incredients I sold brought a little fortune. ^^
