Have I totally messed up?

Have I totally messed up?

So first of all, AMAZING FREAKING GAME! Love playing it so much.

My question involves the fact that I have been just getting distracted by the world in general while kind of following the main story quests. That said, I have slowly been progressing through the Velen main story questline, but letting my self get pulled away doing contracts, exploring, etc. The main story questline is level 6, and I just hit level 12. I noticed it greyed out, and I just heard on reddit that greyed out quests don't give you experience. So there are 2 main quests in my journal that are levle 6 and greyed out. The BB questline and the other quest associated with that quest line.

So am I now out a ton of XP because of this? I've heard that the main story quest line give you a ton of XP, so have I now gimped my overall level by waiting to long to follow this questline?

As long as it is built to the point that I can still reach max level doing the 75% of the game that's left I'm fine, but I will be pretty upset if I missed out on a huge chunk of XP just because I let myself get caught up in the pretty world. It doesn't make sense to make an open world and let people go play in it, and then punish them because they didn't do quests at certain levels.

Now I don't know if this is the case, which is why I'm asking here for clarification.

I would like clarification on main quest xp vs side/contract xp as well! I didn't think about this until now and have been super busy finishing White Orchard 100% exploring/side questing now in Velen. I am probably 85% done with all sidequest/hidden treasure/abandoned villages and misc. caves/chest/ etcetera with help of my strategy guide and the friendly locals! I am level 13 and since arriving in Velen, I haven't done a thing with the main quest lool.. I could be.. ruined here as well! but honestly, if I can't get to level 70, or I mean.. 38. I will accept this and move on making another toon because I am having best time gaming since.. probably Chrono Trigger in early 90's lol I dont remember last time I was this enthralled by a game. I absolutely love this game. No complaints from me. These guys and gals made something so special and the experience will never be forgotten!

I will say, exploring may not be so good in this game though if this proves the case. Another thing I found out while exploring areas, especially from my strategy guide, is I ruin potential quest for that area! Heartbreaking stuff because about 50%, probably less, of the areas I found and cleaned out, had a side quest attached to it, thus lowing my chance at even more xp for the future! If you clean out an area attached to a quest, the quest will cease to exist, thus you can't obtain/complete it. Strategy guide does not warn you that locations are tied to a quest, just shows a treasure chest, a cave or a camp. Slightly inconvenient! It makes me think they want us to play the main quest and only side quest areas the main quest takes you to. Next play through I will go this direction and only explore areas very close to main quest. This might turn into my first complaint down the road lol I like to side quest and explore before main story, in fact, I played Oblvion for nearly 2 years without completing the main story. Though I did take breaks from the game but still. I loved that. I hate linear play. I have a vivid imagination and make my own stories as I go lol

I am level 21 and the whole time I was trying to complete each area then move on to the next through novagrad , velen and white orchid thinking I wasn't going to be able to come back after going to skellige lol but I didn't let my story Gray out (well until I hit 21, I'm stalling on the last ciri mission to handle all the quest below 10 and it's 15 itself fml anyway...) only contracts but all New contracts and side quest I find are way below my level not to mention lacking xp. Couldn't they just beef up the bosses and xp pay outs according to your current level? Why the suggested level at all after you hit those caps? If I'm level 21 all lower quest should ramp up automatically to my level or near it or something shite! I shouldn't even be finding quest out of my level range really, they can't expect you to stay in line with the levels in the main quest and explore all these areas and fulfil all these Damn request for these people without leveling out of range . What was going to happen when the main story ends and the majority of the quest left over are so scattered in range? If your level is higher it should just stay green, just make it a lighter green like you do the reds lol. Love the game btw, like haven't had this much fun since oblivion for real. Thank you CD Projekt Red for the amazing experience, if you could please fix the levels and xp , that would be magical

Of course it didn't. Obviously the way it works is basically that there's a maximum number of XP available if you do everything, and you can get that XP either just by mostly doing the main story, or you can get to it with side stuff, but you can't double your XP by doing everything. So nobody has screwed themselves out of anything by doing "too much" sidequesting, and the sky is not, in fact, falling.
