Help needed for 3D Vision

Hi guys!

Since I'm a noob regarding 3d vision i would appreciate any help that you can give me.
I am an owner of Toshiba X770 laptop with Nvidia GTX 560M (1.5GDDR5) with 268 version driver pack (280 - latest- are not supported by Toshiba and cause seriouse graphic problems ( ). Anyway, my settings in the game are pretty much all enabled , except ubber stuff. Game runs perfect in 2D mode, but when I switch to 3D, it's not so great (it's not fluid or smooth, lower FPS).

So, my questions are: does anybody have same experience with the same or similar graphic card? Is it normal that 3D drains that much power for the performance? Will the new drivers once they are available solve this problem or I just need to lower resolution or something...?

Anyway thank you!!

And btw. i have latest 1.3 patch

I can't see 3D so I've never used it, but here's where you could start and get your answers straight from the experts:

http://www.geforce.com/GamesandApps/games/witcher-2/overview

and here:

Hey SaddlertrampNC!
I have already checked geforce.com and tweakguidse.com sites and they more-less helped regarding settings. I will resume hunting for the answers on nvidia and witcher forums but I'm affraid that there is no way that you can have high settings+3d vision at the same time and have good FPS rate on "gaming laptop". I guess SLI in this case makes a big difference...

Thanks anyway man!

I think 3D causes a game to render the scene twice for each frame, one for each eye? .. Then it blends it together in a way that can be "read" by 3d glasses so you get the perspective effect?

Don't know, but I do know that enabling 3D will result in about 50% FPS when compared to 2D .. :)

Sorry Jamez, thought the FPS part would have been covered in there somewhere. Vinter hit it close enough I think. At least that's almost the way they explain it here:

http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/1010385-how-intensive-3d-vision-exactly.html

Yeah it's around 50%, most of the time it's less of a drop and rarely it's more. If I'm sitting at like 45 or so I think I drop down to 25 or so in 3D, dont really pay attention to the frame rates though unless I notice stuttering.

Wow...this explains things. According to your posts guys and overclock.net forum, I will need at least 80 FPS in 2D mode for smooth playing on demanding games like Witcher 2 in 3D. Hmmm..thats a lot.
I will need to check my FPS when I get home cause I can't find anybody on internet whit the same graphic card as mine so I could compare performances.

Later guys

Well, results that I got with FRAPS are really disappointing:
With 2D: 17-20 FPS
With 3D: 7-10 FPS
Even more strange, when I put to Low settings I maybe get +5FPS ?!?!?

I really expected more from this card.

In attach. are my "regular" settings for the game

Hey Mariusmssj!
I would try new 285 drivers, but there is a "small" problem with Toshiba laptops, apparently there is no way you can install any graphic drivers if they are not approved from Toshiba or in other words you MUST download it from there support site. I could not believe it when I read that. Bunch of...!!!! They are still on 268 version.

Well, I guess I have to hack my own computer.

Thanks anyway man!

Does your laptop have the optimus technology and if so is it setup properly ? If it does have the optimus software then you should be able to upgrade the verde drivers through Nvidia .

One way to check for Optimus is to see if you can do the following steps
1. Open NVIDIA Control Panel
2. Select: Advanced View
3. Navigate to: Manage 3D Settings
4. Select tab entitled: Program Settings
5. Use the "Add" button to find and add the .exe file(s) for the game(s)
you would like to use the Nvidia card for
6. Select the option "High Performance NVIDIA Processor"
7. Click on "Apply"
8. Exit the NVIDIA Control Panel

Hybrid Drive Technology then ? Which would explain why you would need to get drivers from Toshiba .

can you list your full laptop specs for example : Qosmio X770-ST4N04 Laptop . It may help to fully understand which model you have . Are all drivers up to date through Toshiba ?

Sure Tommy, Notebook is Qosmio x770-107 and here are the specs:
http://za.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/product/Qosmio-X770-107/1106648/toshibaShop/false/

Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM Processor : 2.00 / 2.90 Turbo GHz
8 DDR3 RAM (1,333 MHz)
NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M with CUDA™ Technology
Win 7 (64-Bit)

Reagrding drivers, well at least for the graphic driver (and 3d vision driver) are the latest from Toshiba (268.51v)

It says in spec something like: "Solid State Hybrid 4G Drive with 500GB and 4GB NAND flash + 500GB" if thats information that you need

Sorry I stopped following new architecture and technology in computers so I can't really see the connection.

I do recommend getting the updates especially the BIOS update .
I was more interested in the software bundles that came pre-installed or basically any software that will access the hard drive while your gaming and in turn slow the game down .

Some suggestions would be to add an exception in your antivirus program for the Witcher 2 folder and also get Game Booster This will shut down unneeded background programs with one click and when you`re done gaming one click will re-enable them again .
After these two are done retry the game to see if there is any improvement .

Another thing to consider is the 560m is let`s see how to put this . When CDPR released the computer specs for Witcher 2 it was for desktop configuration . The 560m is more comparable to the GTX 550 Ti desktop model in terms of processing power .

BIOS update has beeen made few days ago. And regarding pre-installed programs I pretty much diasabled them all including HDD protection. I have to check one more time troughly.
Antivirius is uninstalled, I only use zonealarm and engage internet lock when I play the game.
Gameboost -> installed it just now, automatic tweaking done, boost it BUT there are no major changes in game. Still getting like 20 FPS on my settings.

And Yes, I am aware that I can not expect notebook results same as desktop. But give me at least 30-40FPS in 2D. I could live with that ). According to http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-560M.48313.0.html I must get pretty good results while playing Witcher 2

And I really appriciate your help Tommy! If you have any more suggestions please tell me. I will check them later tonight cause I got to run now.

Later man
