How can I play my VANILLA W2?

I just installed my copy of the Witcher 2 (the 1.0 version) but as a part of the Installation it requires me to download the entire Enhanced Edition (around 10 Gigs) !! WTF, seriously?!? Is there a way I can complete the installation process without this?

I think the easiest way is if you have the previous patches downloaded already . Disconnect from the internet and install game and apply the patches . After the last of the patches have been applied then go to your install directory namely the witcher 2/bin folder , locate the witcher2exe , right click it and select send to desktop then reconnect to the internet and ALWAYS run the game from the new shortcut you just made . Any attempt to use the launcher will result in downloading the EE . If you want to register your game then open the witcher 2 folder and run the register exe .

The game requires "activation" as part of the install process - and I can onlu assume this activation takes place AFTER the EE auto-update.

As it is, when I cancel the Auto-update, I cannot apply patches as it shows a "version incomplete" message, and if I try starting the witcher2exe, it gives a "Use the Launcher to activate game" prompt.

If you`re talking about the launcher window opening after installation then just close it and do not launch the game . It worked for me in the past by doing it this way on numerous occasions . I don`t know what patches you want but you only need these
0-> 1.35 - http://en.thewitcher.com/patch1-35/
1.35->2.0 - http://en.thewitcher.com/patch2/

2.1 is optional .
1) download patches first
2) Disconnect from internet (is the key here)
3) Install Game and close any window that opens
4) Apply patch(s) and close any window that opens
5) Send witcher2exe to desktop and run from it .

Thanks. The issue seems to have been with the patch. I tried applying the 1.1 International and it gave me the above-mentioned error message, but 1.35 installed just fine. I don't wish to update above 1.1 however - I downloaded the 1.1 patch from some site so maybe it's corrupted or something, but I can't find any 1.1 patch on the Witcher site. Could you perhaps point me to a reliable version of it?

Have you played The Witcher 2 before? If you have, then I can only imagine you want to play 1.1 out of sentimentality. Otherwise, there is no point in not playing, at the very least, 1.35. 2.0 includes a lot of extra features, so you probably want that instead.

Whenever you can, you should update to the Enhanced Edition. It has several bug and glitch fixes, as well as more dialogue (which improves the flow of the story) and a couple of new quests, not to mention some CGI like in TW1.

The links Tommy provided should help you. But seriously, play at least 1.35.

They took down all patches except the 1.35 and 2.0 . If you find any patches other than on this site be sure and run virus scans before trying to update them .
