How did you beat the Dark mode?

How did you beat the Dark mode?

I'm curious... about those players who completed the Dark mode and higher difficulty levels. What method did you use to maneuver Geralt through the game... an X-Box type controller, or the PC's W A S D keys?
The first Witcher used the mouse in an efficient and logical way. You could actually enjoy the scenery while progressing through the quests. In Witcher 2, simply moving your character down a path is a clumsy and frustrating chore using the W A S D keys. I doubt if anyone could beat the higher difficulty modes using just the keyboard. The Witcher 2 changed the dynamics of the game and not in a positive way. Can you recall one sucessful RPG that used W A S D keys exclusively to move your character? I just began the game and see dark clouds on the horizon. I dread meeting my first opponent and attempting to attack or defend using the keyboard. Perhaps I'll change my mind as I get more experienced; but I do miss the mouse.

I'm refering to MOVEMENT. You can't move (forward, backwards, sideways) using the mouse. You move using the WASD keys. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Do you use an X-Box type controller or don't you understand the question?

i hear ya man... that's why i just posted a thread asking about the possibility of combining gamepad and mouse controls. started playing dark mode yesterday and kept on dying with keyboard + mouse. with my 360 pad i barely lost health at all...

i finished witcher 1 on hardest difficulty with keyboard + mouse but it feels really clumsy in witcher 2. i guess also because of the fact that you have to orient yourself towards the enemy to block. though for the life of me i can't remember how that mechanic worked in the first game... i'm pretty sure you didn't have to reorient geralt so often though.

Err... Have you even played the game yet??

To answer your question, mouse & keyboard is fine... lots of people have played Hard/Dark/Insane with normal controls, and there is a bunch of other (even competitive) third-person and first-person games controlled with mouse & kb. I have no idea why you would think it impossible. The combat mechanic in TW2 requires more action from the player than the click-click mechanic in TW1 and doing it with mouse only doesn't sound feasible.

Well, I can see where it could be difficult with a mouse you have to move around the desk/mousepad. Even a wheel mouse. And if that's the case, you might want to consider getting a trackball. Works great (imo).

Oh, and other successful RPG's: Mass Effect and Dragon Age series (ones I've played).

Hopefully, you realize by now that you do not have to use the WASD keys for movement. You can change the key-movement binding to any combination of keys you want. I always use the arrow keys for forward, back, and strafe left and right. The arrow keys are much more intuitive, I think, and as most keyboards separate the arrow keys from the rest of the keys, they're almost ideal for this kind of movement. I don't understand the default of WASD at all--not when the arrow keys are there and waiting, but many games use the WASD for a default setting.

Using the arrow keys is not "clumsy" at all--and in fact most RPGs written for computers as opposed to consoles do in fact use keyboard keys for directional movement in tandem with the mouse for head movement. That's really how the human body works, you know--your head can swivel to look around regardless of the direction your legs are taking you--just the way the keyboard and mouse combination works. It looks like you are making this issue far more complicated than it is. Mouse/Keyboard is way better, and way more responsive than an xBox controller, imo.

Again--you can change the key bindings to any set of keys you want to use for movement--you aren't limited to WASD. And, I have great difficulty thinking of *any* RPGs written for a computer that *don't* proscribe movement via the keyboard. You need to change your key bindings to a set of movement keys that are comfortable for you. Then, just practice moving and looking using the keyboard & the mouse, and before you know it you'll have it down! Forget about the way W1 worked with the mouse, and concentrate on how W2 works for directional movement. It's really very easy to learn.

Are you quite serious? D: The reason should be quite obvious to anyone who has played keyboard-controlled 3D games... to place more keys in reach of your left hand and retain a reasonable APM. The point is exactly to not separate those movement keys from other commands. Not to mention the position of your left arm (although you can move the keyboard to compensate, well, if you can - not every desk has the space).

The arrow keys on a PC keyboard are certainly not designed for controlling first- or third-person 3D games, they predate goddamned Tetris! In fact early FPS games used arrow keys as the default control set, but when it was made possible, people kept changing the controls to WASD to have better functionality and eventually it became the default positioning.

If you consider TW2, around WASD you have 1 (steel sword), 2 (silver sword), 3 (select sign), 4 (quick slot), Q (use sign), E (interact), R (use bomb/knife), Shift (walk), Ctrl (quick menu), Spacebar (roll), Z (medallion) and X (specials) available without changing the position of the hand. All this is very hard to fit around the clumsy arrow keys and even if you can, you won't be able to reach everything without moving the hand. Many 3D games require the same amount of commands or more (several weapons, lean/peek, aim/zoom, abilities, etc.) and it makes sense to use the same keys as other similar games, IMO.

Now in any fast-paced game, you move your hand to reach for an inconveniently placed key and you die (maybe not each and every time, but you get the picture). This is maybe not quite as critical for TW2 (where you can pause with the quick menu and use the mouse to select stuff) but still, dying on Insane because you fumbled with a key too far from your 'run' key is possible and pretty annoying. And there "could" be a group of players who generally don't want/need to pause the game all the time.

Sure you CAN bind movement controls on arrow keys but I can't see how that accomplishes anything but limit your controls and lower your APM.
