I read the books and got hooked.

When I first installed the Witcher in English I wasn't aware that it was a game about the books,
because I read the German localization and in it they are called Hexers, not Witchers.

And then, during the intro cinematic it dawned on me - I was playing a game based on those books !

It's needless to say that I immediately fell in love with it, although I was a bit confused about what was going on.
The translation of the last book hadn't been released at that point and I was a bit at a loss, story-wise.

I also needed time to understand that Dandelion was Rittersporn and why there was no Ciri or Yennefer.

What's that line..

"slowly at first, and then all at once."

Yeah.

Great book, by the way.

I still don't understand why they put that title...

Yeah. That quote from The Fault in Our Stars is really spot-on.

Very small thing for me. I was wandering round the Outskirts, putting up with the ocassional crashes (remember how unstable the early game was?) and just enjoying the atmosphere. Finally headed back to the Inn to hand in a quest or meet Zoltan, i'd forgotten which so I stood in the doorway trying to remember, to the left of my Geralt a cat stretched and then settled down to sleep on the window sill. It was this little detail, one of many in that Inn that endeared the game to me, I got it then and just fully immersed myself in what Geralt was doing and witnessing.

How did I fall in love with "The Witcher"? I was really drunk one night, so was Geralt. By my long hair he mistook me for a young lass.

Jokes aside I've posted mine at least once before, but I like to write of the Time of the Sword and Axe.

It's early 2008, January-ish. I hadn't really played games in awhile and my friend had gone absolutely nuts on the Steam winter sale. One of these was The Witcher. He recommended it to me, sure why not. That game overheated the living hell out of his laptop. It was a Acer whatever slightly better than basic laptop. I like many others fell instantly in love with the game. But the evil laptop was bound to keep us apart.

I tried so many things to keep that thing cool enough when it hit me. I threw both windows open*and that did i. But I was so cold. I bundled three blankets, a ski mask, a scarf, and fingertip-less gloveson. It was so uncomfortable but so worth it. And I really appreciated it when I could finally play it properly. IIRC the temperature was around 20 f, and 0 f with those major winds factored in.

I lauded The Witcher to friends but to no avail, the first games controls were too much. And some got into the second game But never loved it as I had. Finally in 2013 I joined this forum and have pissed all of you off since. You are all great people!

I learned about the game from Dragon Age fans on Bioware Social Network. I was initially put off by it being a set character, but glad I persevered.

For me it started in October 2009 . The wife went to the local wal-mart shopping and she knew that I was into gaming a little bit . I was playing DA:O at the time ....anyway when she returned she handed me a copy of The Witcher Enhanced Edition and said 'Happy early Birthday" . The game sat on the shelf for about 2 months until I finished DAO and DAA . So after that I installed the game and found out that there was a 1.5 patch out that would let me play without a disc O_O .....Really ? Anyway after starting the game and watching the intro I was blown away . By the time I reached Act 1 I was hooked . After finishing the game 2 or 3 times I started participating heavily in the forums and wouldn`t you know it i`m still here . During the early forum days I found out that there were fan translations of the books that weren`t published in English . So i`ve read the books and played the game after reading them and it`s just jaw dropping how much detail went into the game(s) . So there you have it .

It was the summer of 2012(maybe 11), I was a temporary guest at a place and my roommate asked me, "Lars, what kind of games do you play?"
"Well...CoD. That's about it." And he proceeds to give me a subtle look of disgust, as if he just swallowed chewing tobacco and then says, "Ah. Well, that's alright. I guess. You know, I have a ton of really good games, you could borrow them if you like! (the man boycotted Steam and used physical copies) We then go to his room where he shows the massive collection and I ask "Well, what would you recommend to start with?" "Oooh... Let's see, I have...Neverwinter Nights, Morrowwind..." I think blablablabla...."Oh, and THE WITCHER(1), you should really play that, fan-fucking-tastic game! I just said ok and went back to my room with no intention what so ever to follow his recommendation.
The next month or so, I was taking a walk whilst listening to a podcast that just happened to bring up The Witcher 2, and they really had nothing negative to say about it, and it sounded like something completely different than anything I'd ever tried. And then I tried it. Heavy shiet.
That really ended my ignorant views when it came to video games, TW2 and Fallout: New Vegas were huge eye openers for me and ultimately converted me into story driven games.

Though I didn't fall in love with it, I was intrigued enough by the first game's story and overall Witcher lore to not only push through TW1, whose presentation and minigame-ish fighting system left something to be desired imo, but also to look past the first game toward outside sources of lore (like the wiki) and eventually TW2. TW2's improvements in presentation and battle system on top of its continued high quality story telling are what finally endeared me to the series. SOOOO looking forward to TW3 :) .

I first stumbled upon a picture of what appeared to be a naked red-haired women on one of those news gaming websites. That was when I fell in love with Triss. Ahem, I mean the Witcher series.

Good thing you stepped away from the dark fps side and joined the light. :D

Oh and for me it must have been 2009 or 2010 when I played the witcher 1. I pre-ordered TW 2. It got me into GOG as I wanted to help them directly. I did not even have a paypal account back then and made one just to buy TW 2 on GOG.

As far as I'm concerned, I got the first "The Witcher" collectors edition for my birthday in 2007, and suddenly i fell in love with it. When Nord Editore published the first book I immediately got it. Sapkowski style is fantastic: It's simple but really engaging!
Then I got a pc and xbox CE of "The Witcher 2" and now I'm waiting for the third and for other novels as well!

I think Ive told it before in another thread, but I'll expand on the details...

It was early 2009 (January-March), I had "come back" to gaming just a year before, from a long hiatus, and had only tried Vampire: Bloodlines, which I loved (characters and story) but hadnt been able to finish because of the bugs and kind of irritating combat... Maybe also because I was still a little "rusty", cause that happened also with other games.
Not having too much money, I was trading at the time in GAMETZ, and using my awesome back-catalog :p of old boxed games to get new-ones. Trying to find smthg I came upon the Witcher, which, believe it or not, a substancial number of people were trying to get rid of (even of the Enhanced Edition!!). I myself was trying to get rid of "I have no mouth and I must scream" (too old for my PC of the time) and thought a luxury edition of this game could very well worth it. I only knew that the game was loosely based on the "Baldurs Gate" type of RPGs, and that it was restricted for +18 years old... It sounded good. And it was the best deal of my life. :p

Actually my PC couldnt run it, so I had to get an upgrade. The opening scene absolutely blew my mind -I must ve watched that like 50 times, each time I launched the game, :p-. By the end of chapter 1, when this wretched mutant :p and outcast saves the day by actually giving a speech about being mercyful and kind, instead of resorting to his sword, I was totally in love with the guy. :p But it wasnt only that the protagonist was cool and badass. THIS was clearly a very well thought out game, crammed with details, and impressive atmosphere and music, of a caliber I had rarely seen in games before...
The luscious package of the Enhanced Edition also impressed me, together with the fact that these were Polish developers.
All through that rainy and cold Winter (July over here) I devoured that game. And despite my "clumsiness", and the little I remembered of RPGs and stats and all that, :p I was able to beat the game, totally elated by the epic last stages of the story.

At first I roamed this forum in silence, for months, learning about Sapkowski, appreciating the friendly attitude of the members, and salivating on the promise of a sequel (back then we only had an unnoficial "leaked" video to cling our hopes to). :p
When The Witcher 2 was officially announced -March 2010?-, I popped up from the darkness with an appropriate April Fools' Joke. :)
