How does DOT really work?

+
Let's say that for the purpose of this question I'm a particularly sadistic V that just wants to feel cute and poison everyone (no quickhack combos).
I have a few effects to consider now:
  • increase quickhack damage
  • increase DOT damage (per tick)
  • increase DOT duration
  • increase poison damage
I don't know how to weigh up the differences between each. How should I prioritise them when I upgrade cyberware? Do perks that straight up increase quickhack damage even affect the DOT of contagion?

Yes, "Increase quickhack damage" effects will affect Contagion (And other DoT quickhacks like Overheat and T4+ Short Circuit)

Meaning Quickhack Damage = DoT Damage = Poison Damage. So whichever value is highest is the one you want.

For DoT Duration it's up to you whether you prioritize it higher or lower than damage (Whether you feel you can keep the DoT up with your RAM recovery or not)

Ah that is good to know. And ODD because you don't see DOT inceases pop up until level 30, I think. You're much more likely to end up with a bunch of regular + quickhack damage increases.

Not that odd, because DoT increases are there for more than just Quickhacks.

There are weapons and grenades that can produce DoT effects (As well as some perks). Along with weapon mods that provide DoT effects.

Most of these also don't come until levels 20+ which coincides with when you start finding the DoT boosts.
