Hmm. Playing a hacking game right now, in my browser. Check it out and see what you think? I'd like the ability to travel vertically, for one.

Interesting game. Not "too" FPS (at least as the beginning).
More to the point it allows you to go where you wish, gives you a clue how difficult a place is to hack, and has various "weapons" and "skills" you can use/increase.
Hey Sard, use your vast influence to make sure someone over at CDPR at least takes a look at this, food for thought if nothing else.

They don't listen to me anymore, after the incident with the stuffed peacock and the riding crop.

Hey. It seemed funny to me at the time.

I'd have thought they'd have stopped after the barbed wire and mayonnaise incident.

Apparently that's actually some kind of delicacy in Poland. Go figure.

i hope its script kiddie level stuff at least. doing combat in cyberspace is uber-lame and would be a major disappointment.

Gotta hand it to the Poles, they're adventurous is nothing else.

Unfortunately it can't be.
Chances are 75% of players wouldn't know a script from a haiku.

what if the script is a haiku though? consequences will never be the same.

having never played CP2020 and still going through a lot of things about the universe, I'm not really sure of a good way to implement this role yet keep the player actually in game more often than in the net. and I wouldn't want it to devolve into just someone good at hacking things in the real world either. so here's hoping for a unique playable class in a game for once!

Well, the whole point of this particular thread is to brainstorm ideas on how to implement the net.

Well, what makes hacking fun?

Finding secrets.

Outwitting security.

Pattern recognition.

Cleverness in things like social engineering and exploiting unseen loopholes.

Knowing you are part of an elite, a subset of people who Get It. Even if few others understand or even notice.

A lot of the problem with to-date methods is that they do little to none of that. You -know- you're playing a game, not exploring hidden frontiers or cracking nearly unrecognizable puzzles.

I hesitate to suggest this, but perhaps Netrunner play should take some education, some tutorial and should otherwise be opaque to non-Netrunners. I'd recommend some kind of Object-oriented language or one of the learner coding programs. Why not teach anyone who wants to do it the basics of coding? Simple program creation is pretty fun, after all. Toss in some NPCs to socially engineer and you could be good to go.

Well I find things like:

$A = "Sard "
$C = "a figment of the imagination"
IF X < (Y - Sqrt Z) AND (Z OR X > Y) THEN $B = "is " ELSE $B = "isn't "
Print $A+$B+$C

Fun ... to most folks it's just gibberish.

Yeah..that's not got anything to do really with the fun parts of hacking, though. That's coding, a tool of hacking. And, you know, that was kind of fun to decipher, actually. Not very gibberish if you think about it for six seconds.

Also, X = Y. Sorry. We had this argument about Cake (X) and Pie (Y) and I assure you, they are equal.

Now if you simplified it such as this:

RUN commands activate [NAMED PROGRAMS]. IF/THEN statements modify these commands along a set of allowed variable.

So Runner gets up to wall and pulls up the Menu. They can select a variety of programs and choices and modify in a GUI or they can command-interface and type something like this:

RUN Codeworm.

Execute.

Or

IF DATAWALL > 0 THEN RUN Codeworm.

RUN All-Seeing Eye. RUN Daemon. RUN Shield.

IF ALARM = 0 AND DATAWALL = 0 THEN RUN Filegrabber.

IF STATUS = Critical RUN Jackout.

Execute.

Make sure the system autocorrects for spelling and structure, pre-defined terms, etc. of course, but this way, you could type in your hacking run and press the button, watch your avatar and program avatars do their thing. If something untoward happens, the script either stops or, depending, auto-jacks you out..hopefully. Heh heh heh.

Do it the easy way:

EVALUATE HOSTILE-PROGRAM
.....WHEN "Datawall" Run "Worm"
.....WHEN "CodeGate" Run "Raffles"
.....WHEN "Watchdog" OR "Bloodhound" OR "PitBull" Run "Replicator"
.....WHEN "SeeYa" Run "Stealth"
.....WHEN "Speedtrap" Run "Invisibility"
.....Etc.
.....Etc.
.....Etc.
.....WHEN OTHER Run "Jackout"
END-EVALUATE.

This has the advantage in that if you run into a program you don't have a counter for you automatically Jackout.

NICE.

See, shit like this is why I -would- like to see something like a command line interface and various different options you can mess with. People could exchange recipes, build methods, etc.

Datawalls aren't hostile programs, though, really. Also, you might not want to Jackout just because you meet a custom piece of software.

Other than that, I like it a lot.

Netrunning ultimately deserves Oculus RIft integration. Get a chance to actually conduct your run in Cyberspace.

I think multiplayer issues can still be resolved using a ghosting mechanic. For instance, when idle, the runner could be a 'rider' (think Neuromancer) on a party member who has suitable implants, and experience the perspective of that player. Likewise, a non-runner could ghost a runner.

Just my two filthy lucre...

Better safe then your brain oozing out your ears.
If it's non-hostile go back in and manually bypass it.

I'd love to see Oculus rift, but we can only hope.

Being a Netrunner isn't about "safe", Sue! Come on! Balls(ovaries)-to-the-wall fearless risk taking in pursuit of Information! And Money!

Could you really get back in after your first run, safely? Wouldn't you be worried about a now-active Admin?

Hmmm.

Hey, this is more fun I've had Netrunning than in years!

Typing command, from the command list is not NICE, not even close. This is nice:

Also nice! Man, playing that in CP2077 would be a dream.

But in complimenting Suzy, I was admiring her leaner, more efficient used-the-right-CP2020-names version.

Command line is a cheaper and still thrilling method, to some of us who enjoy such verbal construct puzzles. And it really does feel like you're coding a hack.

But that's the point, coding a hack is lame as hell. Using it, is cool.
