I did run into a few females during my bout of playing GW2.

I really need to start playing again.

Not for chicks that is.

Just curious, because I've noticed some number before. In addition, I've read an article stating that 50% of gamers are females http://jezebel.com/confirmed-many-many-female-gamers-exist-50-of-all-g-512923519, which I still think is an exaggeration.

On a personal note, one of the greatest achievements of my gaming/dating "career" is getting my girlfriend hooked on the Witcher. She beat the first game in 3 weeks and she had no prior experience playing PC. She then bought the W2 Collector's edition and is now eating it up.

1. Congrats for the witchertte girlfriend.

2. There a lot of ladies at witcher forums, and I think is great. I don't think we have a 50-50 ratio here, but may be a 40-60.

3. I think jezebel is biased in this subject. I don't think you will find and article there saying both gender can have different interest unless discrimination, opression or patriachy is involved.

Avid female gamer here :) I mainly play RPG's, point-and-click adventure games, and third person action-adventure games, but I'll play other genres too if a particular game catches my eye.

The 50% figure doesn't necessarily surprise me, but I would also like to see the breakdown by genre and single-player versus multiplayer. I don't think of "social" games as videogames so I don't think that should be included but it might have been.

Yeah, you gotta figure that those statistic are thrown off by stuff like Farmville, which, and I obviously say this aware of the slight element of inherent elitism, pretty much never counts for making one a 'true gamer.' Of course, as KOP points out, the vast amount of guys who are sports gamers don't really have any similarities to the people on these boards.

Being a guy, I never play sport games. I own a football game which is so bad it's funny. It's antique as well. Oh wait I think I sold it. I do like kart games or car games like burnout where the objective is to ram your opponents to smithereens.

By the way. I wonder how many women here would find a necklace with a witcher medaillon to be a romantic gift. :p

I don't think most fem gamers mind you asking them if they're a girl who games but its when you make a big deal out of it like "Can I get your number?" or "Let me stalk you..um I mean friend you!" is when we have problems with the male population of gamers.

Women have been gaming since the 70's so they aren't new it's just that poll they've done makes you think fem gamers are new. Also the break down I saw from that poll was COD then FB game, FB game, FB game, really there was no variety in asking them what type of games do they play and frankly I never got polled. I also know fem gamers who change their sex on their profiles to be undercover males to avoid harassment so if companies are looking at their records and go we have X% male gamers and X% fem players their male numbers are off because women checked male. Long story short there very well could be 50% fem players its just they aren't advertising it.

To also complicate things more perhapse the women who took those polls picked the game they knew from the short list provided so if they liked God of War for instance and its not on the list but they do sometimes play Bejeweled but none of the other FB games or COD then Bejewled was what they checked.

I've heard of stories with people making a ring with inscription from the ring of power for a wedding. A bit weird though, with all that ash nazg durbatuluk...

EDIT: Which just reminded me this by the way: http://www.kokes.net/projectlonghaul/projectlonghaul.htm

I couldn't ever get the Ms. to play video games if I tried. She doesn't even play social games.

However, she takes quite an interest in what I'm playing, asking such questions as:
Who's that?
What's that?
Why'd you do that?
Why did you have Geralt have sex with her in front of me?

Or she'll tell me what choices I should make, she especially did that in my first playthrough when I bought TW2 again for Xbox. It made for a unique playthrough because I chose opposite of what she'd say. :p

The Lasagna Queen describes the Witcher games as a "total male fantasy." "Every time I look over there, your character is drinking, gambling, or having sex."

Right, so... there's a problem with this?

Reminds me of my ex. That makes me wonder how many female witcher players choose to let geralt have intimacy with other women in the game and how often. I am almost sure there's a variation on choices made between male and female players if you would look at it statistically.

I recommend you to play Aion online. That MMO has much more females (that really are females) not boys pretending to be females. And the gameplay is much more fun and addictive than GW 2.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect sagas are those kind of games that allow females and males enjoy it at the same rate.
The Witcher is a bit different but also a great experience from what I've heard (from females I mean).

Personally as a male I enjoyed more The Witcher than Mass Effect but Dragon Age (Origins) has something special that makes me want to replay it still nowadays.

Rather than that I would consider it a story driven saga which can be enjoyed by anyone who likes great RPGs and making difficult choices that really matter. A saga where you have to think before acting.

Sounds just like me:) RPG's being my favorite, but I do love a good adventure game. Also play some action adventure games on my PS3, though its been awhile.

I have to admit I was one of the people that almost didnt play TW1, simply because the first clip I ever saw of the game was the quest where Geralt beds Adda. I felt that was very male orientated and I didnt bother. But then my boyfried bougth it and gave it to me, and I loved it much more than him. Now I probably drive him mad talking about the series too much, hehe

Iorveth offcourse, hence the icon:)

I used to run http://wishroom.tumblr.com then got too busy and gave it to someone else, then they got too busy... we might revive it at some point, though. The fandom has been pretty quiet lately. You can find others through reblogged posts, although I don't know which ones are Witcher-centric or even still active.

@Mihura
Aeeeeeehhhhhhhhh me too actually... :|

I'll go contact some people now.

I imagine it's the same with men. Indeed, I know more women who play video games in my personal life than men, and 99% of men I know are social gamers.
Well that speaks about your personal life rather then facts. I could personally say that I can count the female gamers I've met in person on two hands. Personally I think stats provided by gaming companies who allow female characters to be played are far more accurate.

But now you live in Canada, what about Syria. I very much doubt the situation is anything but reserved with only a few female gamers there.

For instance only 18% played a female character in Mass Effect 3. Barely 18%, so to me the 50% is hogwash, and that's just core gamers.

Hardcore gamers, the percentage is skewed even more in the favor of male gamers: There are very very few women who participate in any gaming tournament. Strategy, shooters ( including those that allow you to play women ), MMO Arena tournaments and so on.
