Well that speaks about your personal life rather then facts. I could personally say that I can count the female gamers I've met in person on two hands. Personally I think stats provided by gaming companies who allow female characters to be played are far more accurate.

But now you live in Canada, what about Syria. I very much doubt the situation is anything but reserved with only a few female gamers there.

For instance only 18% played a female character in Mass Effect 3. Barely 18%, so to me the 50% is hogwash, and that's just core gamers.

Hardcore gamers, the percentage is skewed even more in the favor of male gamers: There are very very few women who participate in any gaming tournament. Strategy, shooters ( including those that allow you to play women ), MMO Arena tournaments and so on.

Not really because for example most of my friends tend to play male and female so they can see everything but some only play male because projecting and all that and I bet the more casual gamer does the same. Since you do not know the gender of the person playing that is not accurate either. Guild Wars 2 is a good example of that balance. My Guild has 60% of female players so there is that but I still cannot say that they have a 50/50 populations since you never know for certain the gender of a person.

I don't think that would necessarily tell you anything, as I've absolutely no idea whether or not there actually IS a correlation between being female and wanting to play as a female character.

I do know that there're a number of female gamers who make that claim, and who post in forums saying that they won't play Game X unless it allows them to play as a female, but without access to decent statistics, I've no idea how representative that view is.

If a game company wants to attract female players, the first thing they need to learn is that we don't all think exactly the same way.

Hmm, IMO both men are sexy in a different way. But still… Geralt is GERALT! :D (Though, I have to admit that I can’t stop staring at Iorveth’s long eyelashes and his perfect jaw line).

There are no gamers in Syria in general, so it`s irrelevant for gaming company purposes.

As others have mentioned, it`s not necessarily a good indicator. I know several women who prefer to play a man.

I do not think it`s 50% either, yet. But it`s growing and getting close. If I ignore all male social gamers and sports game players, and focus on story-driven casual games which matters more to me than an overall statistic that is comparable to `how many people watch movies`, I think they make a substantial part.

Hardcore gamers, the percentage is skewed even more in the favor of male gamers: There are very very few women who participate in any gaming tournament. Strategy, shooters ( including those that allow you to play women ), MMO Arena tournaments and so on.

I am not a hardcore gamer so I couldn`t care less, for our intents and purposes (story driven games). Nor would it matter for games like the witcher which can be enjoyed by casual players (they are designed for them in any case).

Well if I focus on story based games, or games with stories of any description ( that includes Call of Duty ) then I can still see on the forums a larger female demographic then a male one, even for Bioware.

You might care less, but hardcore gamers are an important part of the demographic. The fact there are so few female hardcore gamers is indicative of female attitudes towards games.

It's not because the loudest female voices demand female protagonists that they are necessarily speaking for all of us.
Just look at exactly that number, now go on ME related topics where people are screaming that femShep is the best and still it's only 18%. If a majority of people who write comments say the female character is the best then why is it only 18% ?

Easy because the ones like me don't post about it. I'm a female hardcore gamer and I don't like playing female characters.
Even more so since voice acting for protagonists became a thing.
My nails cringe when I hear femsheps voice, I wanted to pull my own hair out after hearing female Hawkes voice.

and maybe it's even a bit sexualized, I just prefer staring at a males ass for hours of game-play...

But yeah there are still less female hardcore gamers then males. But that was the same if you take a peak towards D&D back in the day.

Well sure, but given that male gamers can play female Shepard, and many of them do ( myself included ) then it balances it out with regards to the numbers of Mass Effect.

Also the forums generally represent the vocal minority more so then anything else.

There's only one Shepard! Default, male, paragon soldier!

I hate playing as a female character, so I always have a problem with my male characters in MMO games, everyone thinks I'm a male :p

I don't know why, but I love games/movies/books with handsome male protagonists .

I've played many games of different genres, but my favourites are:

The Witcher series of course ;)
Metro 2033
Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare
Call of Duty World at War
Medal fo Honor: Pacific Assault
GTA IV
Need for Speed Undercover
Dragon Age Origins
Mass Effect trilogy
Civilization III
Assassins Creed (1 and 2, but I hate all that golden apple stuff)
Battlefield BadCompany 2 (multiplayer, single player campaign was boring :p)
Minecraft (lately)

And online games like:
Wolf Team
APB reloaded
ShellShockLive 2
Last Chaos

Well, the way I play it, I always let Geralt take a bath with Triss. Which I kinda feel bad about, because I don't really even like her, I don't want her to be the main romance option or Geralt's one true love (chose Shani in TW1, don't know Yennefer yet so I don't have an opinion here). It always happens against my will! :p/> Just can't resist that silly scene with the Scoiatael dwarf, even if it's sort of corny. (And the sex itself is done rather nicely of course).
Then my Geralt always has sex with Ves, pity the relationship doesn't have any room or time to develop later.
I would have sex with Cynthia, I think she had good chemistry with Geralt, but guarding the tome of doom seems more important to me, so-sorry.
I once tried a hooker just out of curiosity, but I don't normally do it because I don't support prostitution and because I'm stingy. Also had sex with Mottle once out of the same reason, but trying that again wouldn't feel right.

While I have some issues with the male gaze (won't go into that, it's already been discussed in several places), I'm ok with the sex scenes in TW2, if that's what @Senteria you were wondering.

As for Geralt vs Iorveth: I only have eyes for Iorveth, seriously, he's got no competition when it comes to male hotness in TW2. (Geralt would probably be second in my ranking, but they're light years apart). :D/> Damn, it's embarassing to have a fangirl crush at my age, but can't be helped, can't be helped. />
For the sake of equality: the hottest female contest winner is Philippa, Saskia being the runner-up. />

And I wonder about those female gamers who refuse to play if there's no girl as playable character - is it something radical? I mean, just because of that they miss on such great games as TW, Planescape Torment, or, from a different genre, Broken Sword for instance? (yes, I played them and absolutely loved them, I'm not completely game-illiterate, yay!) Do such people really exist and if so, do they realise the disservice they're doing to themselves?

@Dona, thanks for bringing the wishroom up, didn't know this existed - but I already like it a lot! :)

I don't really care about it one way or the other. In Witcher 1, my first time through I avoided the sex cards because I was focusing on the quests and the story. On my second play-through, I remembered the mill scene from the demo and wondered if there were any other funny scenes like that so I tried to get the cards, but I was disappointed that most of them were just the card.

In Witcher 2, I didn't even realize Geralt could hire the whores just because I wasn't interested in it, and the Mottle proposition felt wrong to me, but I thought the Ves relationship was cute. It seemed in-character and made sense within the context of the story so I thought it fit.

The Philippa/Cynthia scenes kind of pissed me off though due to how they were presented. It came across as pure fan-service to me. Allegedly Philippa is supposed to be doing everything she can to find Triss, but she still has time to pose in sexy positions with her girlfriend so that Geralt can "accidentally" walk in on them? If it happened once, maybe it wouldn't have bothered me so much, but I got annoyed that it happened several times where Geralt was busy running around getting shit done meanwhile Philippa was just fucking around and not doing what she said she would.

In retrospect, it might not really be out-of-character since Philippa is a self-centered bitch who really didn't care whether Triss lived or died, but at the time it seemed out-of-place like it was only there for fan-service, so that's the impression that stuck with me even after I knew the full picture. And Philippa really did care whether Saskia lived, regardless of what happened to Triss, so it still seems a bit off to me even considering that she didn't really care about finding Triss for her own sake (she still needed the rose for Saskia, so why wasn't she actually looking for it?).

Geralt. I seem to be in a minority here, but I've never understood the appeal of Iorveth (I hate his personality).

Why do you assume that male gamers play as a male character and female gamers play as a female character? For a game like Mass Effect where the main character is voiced, I make my decision based upon the voice actor rather than choosing a female character by default. Jennifer Hale = win, so I did go with female Shepard, but if there had been different voice actors such that I hated her voice and liked male Shepard's voice then I would have chosen male Shepard instead.

And for some of Bioware's past games like Kotor and Jade Empire, I played as both genders on different play-throughs to see what was different. I didn't like Mass Effect enough to bother, but I do know some people who were totally hard-core into it and replayed it a bunch of different times with different choices (gender, alignment, etc.).

So I wouldn't assume that 18% necessarily represents the female gamers who played it (some of that could be male players who prefer to play as female Shepard, and some of the male Shepards could be played by women as well).

If I create a character it's a female, if I play a beat 'm up I pick female. It's not just the looks. It's about their personality and the way they are. The more I think about it, the less I understand why. :p
