How to attack better when mounted combat?

How to attack better when mounted combat?

I've read some people raving about mounted combat, so they clearly enjoy it. What I can't seem to get very efficient at however is hitting anything. It seems for me at least that dismounted combat is always order of magnitude better than mounted.

Not slightly, not good deal more - actual order of magnitude is best way I can describe it.

I read about holding down the attack key to go into slow motion attack to better aim your sword stroke when mounted, but all that seems to do for me is a) hold my swing in the shoulder ready position until I b) release the mouse button and then it goes into attack.

It does seem to slow down the combat swing action, but that doesn't seem to make mounted combat appreciably better. 5-6 pesky level 5 wolves that I would utterly destroy as a mere level 13 char (even on DM) when dismounted, surround my horse and basically mauls me until I fall off. At which point I'm back to dismounted combat so no problem, but it seems to make mounted combat pretty useless.

Is this perhaps just a death march thing? As in, combat mechanics are so unforgivable on DM that mounted combat really isn't anywhere near optimal to even do on DM? I'm really not sure because my two main problems right now with mounted combat is a) even hitting anything and b) while using the slow down time hold attack button and then swing technique does help on the aim, it drastically reduces the number of hits you get in and makes mounted combat almost a 1:5 or even 1:10 affair for number of hits you get in over same time.

If mounted combat on DM is working for you, any tips?

Combat on horseback is fun in its own way, I don't think you're supposed to compare it to normal combat. I ever enjoyed it even before knowing I could slowdown the attack, I just charged on the enemies multiple times until I land the hit. I think horseback/mounted combat is more of a 'minigame'.

I play on Death March and have no problems whatsoever with mounted combat. It's actually way easier than fighting on foot as the damage you deal is significantly higher. The important thing is, when you move your mouse, the horse will go in that direction. Geralt aims the sword automatically. It's not like Mount & Blade where you aim your sword yourself.

Are you moving with roach or just standing still? Since you said you got surrounded by a pack of wolves and got dismounted i'm assuming you were standing still trying to kill them. That's a bad idea... The whole point of mounted combat is to time your swing at the right time when you're moving at the fastest speed and instantly kill monsters/humans by dismembering them. Otherwise it's pointless to fight on horseback.

Kind of an in-between move at normal forward speed, and then stop to try and aim hit better. Not at a canter (shift key) or sprint (double shift) - when moving my problem seemed to be always missing, so I tried stopping when near the mob.

I can see that's now a bad thing, get surrounded by mobs and fall off. But moving I always missed, but didn't try at sprint so I'll give that a go. If Geralt aims automatically, I must be doing something wrong because whenever I move and try to hit something I ride by, my Geralt always, always misses. Not even 1%, as in zero precent will he ever hit anything I gallop by.

Only time I've ever managed to land a blow is have the mob kinda diagonal left or right of my mount as I slowly move by it, and then I can connect with a sword stroke - mostly using the delay swing slow time hold attack button key technique.

Will try at faster canter and sprint speeds.

It's not easy to hit when moving at high speed. I wasn't even aware you could slow down time by holding the attack button, but it's doable even without that.

I love the mounted combat. It's probably the best so far. You're supposed to pass by the enemies, not being surrounded by them. And mounted combat isn't a good option in every fight.

Ok thanks for the tips, and now I love mounted combat lol.

Turns out speed is key. Speed = more power, harder hits, lot better chance of 1-hit kill and/or dismemberment.

Sprinting and lopping off a bandit head is so darn satisfying.

For wolves and other pack animals, I've learned that sprinting through and getting 1 hit almost reduces the fear meter your horse can sustain rather than let get surrounded and then you are thrown from horse. Gotta say that the slow time delay action is pretty crucial though, pretty hard to land hits sprinting by unless you use the hold attack key down mode to trigger slow time.

Just hold attack button it will slow time gives you better accuracy when mounted combat. Also w/ nekker warrior decoction removes fear and increase mounted combat damage.
