How to edit .dds files (the cheap way)

Most of the pro-modders out there are giving out tips as to how to edit the .dds textures. They are for the most part using Adobe Photoshop CS and the Nvidia Plugin - but for those of you on a more limited budget (or like me - hates photoshop) you can use Gimp.www.gimp.orgDownload the DDS pluginhttp://nifelheim.dyndns.org/~cocidius/dds/Then the options you need to use when loading are do not load MIP maps and save decompressed 8 bit RGB including the MIP maps. I found that GIMP got the job done infinitely better than Photoshop which crashes and refuses to save on my Vista system

Heya bud.. Good show.. I would suggest making the DDS texture compressed DXT5 format as I have seen it does a good job, but have not made any graphical comparison's between the two in Witcher. You can also use "CrazyBump" which will make a good normal map as well as generates displacement, occlusional, specular maps also..The witcher uses a plugin called RTT(RendertoTexture) to generate the texture maps but the ones I have used seemed to work without it but the witcher used it for generating their texture maps.. http://www.rendertotexture.com/index.php?view=downloadKeep up the great work bud, and thanx for letting the rest of the community in on your findings..CheersVinnieMc

Knew about those ones thanks - but how much is Photoshop retailing for? 649 $ last count - so that's why I started the thread...
