Don't like Steam any more than I do Origin or Uplay. It's still a hurdle between me and the game, I'm still forced to install it on my PC if i want said game, and it's still DRM. I really do not understand why Steam gets a free pass so often with gamers. It is DRM, plain and simple.

The lesser evil, no more.

Steam provide other benefits for me - they were the first to have a storefront that sold new games and didn't just say "Not Available In Your Country, Please Pirate It Instead". That meant a lot.

I don't LIKE Steam's DRM, and I definitely don't like the crap in their EULA, but so far they're staying a couple of inches on the "tolerable" side of the barrier. That could change.

So no, I don't think they're as bad as Origin and Uplay, but if someone else's "tolerable" barrier is in a different place, that's totally up to them.

You..totally don't. Have Steam set to always offline. Voila.

You have to be online every time you launch if offline mode breaks. It was broken for so long for me that I just assumed that was how it worked, and it seems to break on a case-by-case basis rather than being universally broken or fixed for everyone. How they could make offline mode so buggy and prone to problems, I have no idea, but there's no popup that tells you that it's broken. It just demands an internet connection before working, as though that's how it's supposed to function.

I don't mind Steam as much as I used to now that offline mode works for me, but can still understand why some don't like it. Mandating a client is kind of like saying, "Yeah, you bought the game, but now you have to wear this sombrero every time you want to play it." Many find that particular brand of hat to be charming, but others may feel ridiculous paying through Skyrim in a mandatory sombrero; there are few things quite as bitter as buying something and finding that it comes with strings attached.

Huh. Never ran across this bug. Apparently it's -mostly- fixed for users, but people still experience issues sporadically. Pesky.

First of all CDPR themselves don't believe that 1pirated copy= 1 sale lost. If the game is pirated a lot it's indicator of quality of the game. You can't convince pirate to buy a game if the actual legit version of the game is worse because of DRM. See ubisoft games, aggressive drm actually reduced sales instead of improving them, meanwhile witcher 2 with no drm sold over 2 million copies on pc alone. Ironically a lot of people pirate games or crack them only to avoid DRM.

if its 100% on-line im out. i avoid games with bullshit like that. i prefer to play my game at my own pace and net connectivity is not always guaranteed where i live.

Definietely not into onlne only games. I probably wouldn't want to purchase the game if it were so.

Giggle.I'll purchase it because CDPR is making Cyberpunk 2020, the open-world RPG. I don't care if it has always online, blood-activated russian-language only DRM. At all. EVEN STARFORCE.

These are mere annoying obstacles between me and playing CP2020.

You guys give up so easy.

As good a place as any to come clean.

When Witcher 2 came out i pirated it...and when you finish the tutorial section in that game you get a popup message thanking you for playing their game and it just broke my heart so, now since then i bought the game twice, one for me and one for my better half.

Oh, I dunno. My favourite form of DRM is this from Wikipedia:

"Bohemia Interactive have used a form of technology since OFP, wherein if the game is suspected of being pirated, bugs like guns losing their accuracy or the players being turned into a bird are introduced. "

I only wish it were more common, immediately obvious and reliably funny when it happened. I suspect more pirates would purchase.

Here's one fairly funny version of DRM being implemented in a game:

I would hate it and i won't buy&play it if they make it always online. Having an online option could be nice (playing co-op over the internet etc) but otherwise keep your online bull**** out of my RPG games..

And they made assassins creed games with online DRM, did it work? No! Those darn pirates cracked the game all the same. (as the report suggest same week even) All the online DRM did was to make it difficult to play for the buyers. Not all of us have a steady internet connection.

Heh, that's great, Lesinar. Unstoppable Scorpion of Doom. If it had yelled " Arrrr, Matye!" the whole time would have been even better.

Please, let's not have it perma-online. What an awful idea.

Let me elaborate why I hate the "always online" thing- I don't like that I constantly need to prove the fact that I purchased a good, and I don't like that I need to provide internet for a game if I am not going to use in that capacity.

Sim Citys always online has been hacked, posted on Reddit... here is a BBC news article with links & analysis supporting the validity of that recent "EA employees open letter to the vultures" allegation that always online was not even required for the game.

Always online is extremely bad, I would *never* buy a game with it. I detest being forced into something. Its also a potential security risk, if the netcode isn't robust.

I accept other forms of DRM, but I don't like it, I believe its a waste of money for the developers to licence. I'm unconvinced extra profit would be made.
