I don't know which game you are referring to. My protagonists always survive. :Which would be just as stupid.
Would be bad game design, simple as that...
There was a game which did it like that and people got really mad.
As for poll: NG stands for New Game then? And it means what exactly? All my games have 'New Game' option, that is you start over.
If you mean New Game+ however, meaning you start over with all your loot, character levels and upgrades from previous gameplay, then I say no. I'd rather let things transfer form Witcher 2 saves, as it did from Witcher 1 to Witcher 2. Let the devs continue to implement our game history so we can savour the results of our hard work from the two previous games.
As for free roam...well...isn't it entirely up to the player to free roam how much they like until doing the last main quest?
Never been a problem for me. I know I savour my gameplays for as long as I want, and do all side quests, visit all places, speak to all npcs, and completely grind all possible activities(how did that sound? I mean mini-games and suchOr when you get to the, "Abandon all hope ye who enter here, for this is the path of no return" signal you could just go do what you want and put it off however long.
In Skyrim, Fallout 3(NOT the original Fallout) and New Vegas this is easy as in all Bethesda games. You just watch in which direction the game wants you to go, ergo the main quest, and you choose the opposite direction and have a good time, as long as you would like. In Skyrim this worked well, and I was dragon free for countless of hours until I chose to continue the main story. Of course, by then I had gotten so good and had built up quite the stats. It felt as if I sneezed Alduin off that mountain, but oh well, you can't have everything. ^_^
In Fallout 3 this worked as well, as long as you didn't accidentally stumble upon the main quest, negating the quests leading up to that one.
In Witcher 3 I guess they will take from both Witcher 1 and 2. It's free roam a never ending adventure as long as you stay away from main quest path. I guess the devs will use more from 1. Where 1 didn't let you go anywhere at any time, 3 probably will, but with logical restrictions.
That is, until you progressed far enough in the story you can't continue it just by going to the next stop in said story, or skipping previous stops. I imagine that's like, going to Johnny's cosy home BEFORE we got the info from Djikstra about Johnny. Sure, we can probably go there, but there won't be any cutscene and Johnny won't come out or show himself because, Geralt does not know that his name is Johnny, or that Johnny's there in the first place.
This I can't know of course, but it is my guess. They handled it superbly in Witcher 1. Its simple, and logical. Have I ever said that I really loved Witcher 1? ^_^
Oh, and HUD elements and floating text. On or Off, as long as it's a player choice
