I am glad that horse riding is not mandatory (save for a couple of racing side quests). My Geralt is on foot 99 percent of the time and I treat the horse like the car in the good ol' Fallout 2.

I remember the great concern us kb+m users when we realized there was lack of kb+m coverage for TW3. Fortunately, it proves to be better than I expected :)

On topic, horse riding and Geralt movement sure need more tweaks to be more responsive and smooth. Let's hope this is the next thing CDPR will cover after they have managed to fix the bugs and performance issues.

I love horse riding in The Witcher 3, it's my favorite thing.
Seriously, it's all I do as I never fast travel and it's really nice and what else is there to say.

Inferior to RDR, but then nobody has matched RDR's horse riding....superior to Skyrim. Roach does stop for no apparent reason occasionally, but mainly when I'm attempting to ride a horse over terrain I shouldn't be riding over. You also get an amusing graphical glitch sometimes when you force Roach down difficult terrain, where all of Roach legs raise and you hover to the other side.

I have no major problem with horse riding in the game, apart from a few QoL changes: jumping over obstacles consistently, being able to walk at a pace (I would like to use Alt to switch from trotting to walking) and the camera reset speed while cantering automatically (when keeping Shift pressed).

I usually don't have a problem to casually go from A to B on horseback (although Roach seems to have some problems with bridges), but the horse races are infuriating. In most of them, I don't have a good time. Roach always stops for no apparent reason, and if you hit any obstacle, 99% of the time, you lose.

Try to run with a horse across a forest :p . Now serious, the only thing i would change with the horse is the jumping button with the controller or make the jump automatic

Controls are terrible. Anyone who says otherwise is in denial...

...or has never played a game with good controls.

i rarely ride my horse unless im full of inventory and use it to ride to the nearest fast travel point to sell stuff. i think the horseback combat is funny trying to line up to hit other guys on horses and missing or swinging on the wrong side is entertaining for some reason.

I've had no problems with the controls for Geralt or Roach. I use M/K controls and love Roach.

Is this with controller... M/K controls I've never had this issue with. I heard controller does and if you continue to press the forward movement while running it won't happen.. Don't know as I don't have controller...

EDIT: The only issue I have is I can't get the bugger to auto follow road. Oh well I can do so manually with ease, much easier than I was especting...

I have to disagree you with you. I think it is great aside from the combat on horse being hard. Now dragon age inquisition that horse was brutal

I instead actually enjoy horse riding. The only thing that bothers me a little are small obstacles that completely stop Roach even when at full speed (when imo he should be able to jump over them automatically, especially if galloping; horses aren't stupid, they avoid and jump over obstacles by themselves. they don't need constant input from a jockey to do it), but apart this I like strolling around. Maybe with a controller is different but with K+M Roach is easy to control and enjoy.

Of the games I played that have horse riding as a mechanic W3 is one of the better at it. Skyrim completely sucks, in Inquisition the horse is practically useless and after trying it once I saw no point whatsoever on it being there, Mount and Blade is not badly done but the context is too different to make a proper comparison, Red Dead Redemption is very good and the only one of these that's better than W3.

So, all in all, I find W3 horse riding well done. Red Dead Redemption is better but given the context of that game horse riding is a primary factor, much more so than in W3, so it is obvious that the devs dedicated a lot of focus on having the mechanic work as good as possible. Apart some little awkwardness here and there (that I'm sure CDPR will adjust by and by) W3 is not so much inferior to RDR as far as horse riding goes; the feeling is there so it's only a matter of making some slight changes.
