Never mind, I found the answer in the FAQ. I missed it before posting.

Everything you need to know will be told when you start playing, so the answer is yes, you can just jump right in.
Just like me!

Yes you can, the developers made it so , you just need to decide at the start of the game some kind of choice that will help you understand more as you progress .

If you'd like to know more about the series, you can learn quite a bit here: http://witcher.gamepedia.com/Witcher_Wiki?cookieSetup=true

Thank you for the info, I was reading on VG247 that this game is very hard. That it takes a lot of preplanning before you face your opponents.

That's true, but it depends. They've several difficulty levels from which to choose.

You can chose the easiest difficulty which is called "Just The Story!", so you should not worry. :)
There is something for everyone.

Like in The Witcher2 the information is there and INGAME.
You will not have to consult guides or external wikis.
During the GOG livestream combat /Q&A they confirmed it again.
If you have a savegame from a previous game you can import a "world state", if not there will be a discussion with an NPC ingame that will help you decide how previous events turned out and give you enough information to understand the world and motivations/backgrounds of characters.
There is also a journal/beastiary giving you more info about the lore and history of the world of the witcher.

Perfect, I love it when you can find out about the lore inside the game itself. It really immerses you in the game world, something some developers (Bungie) don't understand.

On another note:
A few people asked if the map markers are mandatory - meaning if the quest design just assumes you have them turned on.I read a lengthy review of TW3 on 4players.de and they explicitly stated that they are NOT.
Exploration is handled very well and the quests reflect that. They give you enough information to find the general area quests take place and those locations are designed to give you all the clues to find what/where/how you have to do things without having to resort to mapmarkes, heads-up displays and even the witcher sense. Though certain quests still expect you to use the witcher sense to get the final confirmation.

You have to play W1&W2, those games are awsome. W3 will explain the story about what did happen, but you will miss the geralts adventure on this two games.
