Eh, I disagree.
I spent more or less two years saying "I'm not expecting this combat to be anywhere near good but I'm in anyway, for everything else".
Turned out the combat is actually one of the things I'm enjoying the most now.

Could it be better? Sure, what couldn't?
Is it bad? Remarkably, no.

I dunno about you guys, but I'm absolutely loving the combat. At first I was like, "Whoa, what's going on!?" But after that Bloodborne-like learning curve... it feels great because you REALLY (like Bloodborne) need to take it slow and really dig into the combat before you can come in fast and efficient. I really like how with certain enemies you kinda NEED to be fast, and thinking fast.. and with other enemies you have to TOTALLY adjust your thought process and maybe slow it down a little.

I love it.. It's hard. But not in an unfair way.
Now I do hate when enemies are all around you... but, again, you just have to find your own way of avoiding those situations

Witcher 3 combat is not about getting in a fight and getting out of it unscathed.

You need to know when you attack , when to bait them on attacking then attacking/counterattacking back , you need to use strategy and the Signs , you need to dodge out of the way when an attack is incoming(meaning baiting them thus giving you a chance to attack them back) , you need to block and you need to roll out.

If the enemies are on a group of 5 or more using roach and attacking from the horse could benefit alot because Geralt deals alot more dmg than attacking on foot. Although personally I only do that(not always cause.. it aint fun xD) if the enemies are higher leveled than me.

Now if you are in combat with 5 or more enemies on foot then you should apply strategy there, I tend to use Aard to knock them down(if it happens) then go close and do a fast attack to instantly apply a Fatal Blow(Thus killing them on 1 hit).

To summarize it, Witcher 3 promotes Strategy over fighting unprepared(brains over brawns).

What WAS wrong with his post is that it was an unformed, unformatted, unique, solid, massive wall of text.
Not sure where "literature" comes remotely into play, by the way.

Man, I'm very VERY sorry you can't enjoy the combat. The combat is really well crafted. Its very challenging, and very rewarding. I'm very sorry that you will miss out on understanding and enjoying the combat. I once used to think JUST like you with TW2. It took me 3 years later (2 times ragequiting and just uninstalling the game and 1 year in between retrys) till i finally installed the game a 3rd time and it all just clicked (Full story on "If you hate the combat in TW3, you're doing it wrong" thread). It really is one of the best fighting mechanics in RPGs and I've played alot of them. (FF 4-12, 11, 14 some of 13, Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, Fall out, Bloodborne, etc)

My heart breaks for you and hopes it will "click" for you like it did to me. As I said in the other thread, I used to hate TW2 and thought it was the worst combat ever at some point. (i mention TW2 because its basically just like 3's, I still think 3s is even better than 2 now; its amazing)

I actually really enjoy the combat. I think a lot of people's problem is that they panic in combat from what I've seen. I play very methodically. Position yourself make use of all your signs(not just the shield). Also I feel like block is under used a lot. Though I did play and beat master ninja mode in both Ninja Gaiden 1 & 2. So the pace of battle is like 1/4 of how hectic NG was lol. So to me I don't feel uncomfortable.

The combat is OK with me and I don't normally like a more strategy tactile combat feel in games (I like more fluid, action oriented and ultra responsive). This game's combat feels tactical in a sense, like a mortal combat style feel to it where timing, placement all play an important role.

What I think is a huge clusterf- is the movement pretty much when not in combat. It's horrible slidey poor animation control loss that really hurts this game. When it takes 5 minutes to loot a barrel in a little hut, something is wrong.

The only time I have issues with movement is when I'm near ledges, stairs, and anything that may require me to vault. Any movement off center causes things to just not work properly.

Slowness is good. I makes you need to think about the danger of what move you'll try next. I'm actually focusing on strong attacks. Just gotta need to be careful when setting things up. And against large packs of monsters, bombs (and the whole of alchemy) are your friend. If you try to tae them on as if you're in a free flow game, you'll prolly die.

Yeah, having been playing witcher 2 on Dark mode for a week prior, this combat is hard but satisfying (blood and broken bones).

Pretty much what everyone above says: you win by planning and strategic combat. Evading attacks then hammering them. Bombs, oils, potions, signs and not just button mashing. When you make it through a combat, undamaged, totally feels like you are a badass.

Witcher 3's combat ain't about buttons smashing. It's about dodging, counter-attacking, waiting for the right moment to attack. I personally love how challenging the combat in this game is. To his each own I guess.

At first I was terrible at using dodges and kept getting my arse handed to me. After 6 hours of pain it became my second nature, now I am kicking arse and enjoying the combat immensely. And this is on normal (I suck at games), combat is incredibly tactical especially if you have multiple opponents, the AI isn't slacking off. So Have to politely disagree OP.

I accidentally ran out from a cliff plunging to my death, but that was my fault, as I forgot I had run toggle on. Embarrassing, as I had just cleared a bandit camp without a hitch. Otherwise I'm in pretty good control. Too bad I can't bind all controls to my liking, but oh well. In combat I'm learning more and more about Geralt's limitations, enemy behaviour and all that jazz that is combat. I'm loving it. Especially since you can clearly survive going by skill alone, even when facing powerful enemies with weak equipment. I recently took down a bear. Had to fight him five minutes but I did it. Two direct hits from him and I was dead, but with dodge, timing and a whole lot of Quen shields(and Axii Sign, who would've thought??) I beat him. All those monster encounters and I'm still level 2. I love Death March. =)

took me some time to get used to it, but now i feel its one of the best combat systeme i ever saw in open worl RPG, i have yet to play anything close to it

while agree the heavy weight of geralt walking/runing can be bothersome sometimes but dont forget that you can CANCEL most/if not all of your movements in combat with a roll or a doge wich basically nullify that weight momentum

once you understand that you'll notice that space control is very important and dodge/roll are mandatory to properly do it and enjoy the combats !

also parry, parry, parry ! its so fun and feel so good to counter attack and cast igni/heavy attack

I had a battle with a grave hag. I had to use all my abilities to kill her. Dodge, roll, oils, potions, silver sword fast atacks, quen. It was a very dynamic fight. Much better than any rpg i've ever played. But them, I'm playing on broken bones. On lesser difficults it may be too easy and boring. Try to raise the difficult level

Combat is fine, if you don't want to dodge around all the time like a madman just press Alt and sidestep. It took me a couple of hours to get used to the combat compared to previous games, but once you get the hang of it... it's really smooth and fun.
