I must know...

There might be some clues in the meaning of the original Polish word: płotka [pwotka] (feminine gender), which is actually a diminutive form of płoć ( [pwoch'] = roach) - and because of that is somewhat tender in character. The word also means "someone unimportant" as opposed to a "big fish" (in criminal context for instance).
I hope it helps.

Since the title of the topic was "I must know" my answer to that is "get used to disappointment"... 5 points to anyone who knows where the quote is from.
