Witcher 1 had a werewolf and many different vampires like fleders, garkains, bruxa etc.

Witcher 2 had indeed less monsters or variatons of same species.

Will Witcher 3 compensate by having more monsters again, like Witcher 1. I do hope so!

Mystery is important though. It is always nice to see some creativity or hear about things you did not know about yet.

Hah got ya ! I said Irish, not Celtic... Bram Stoker. Yes I was being slightly facetious

But not definitely Serbian either, no. Fact is we do not know the precise origin of Vampires, all we can say is that they are European, just like that wiki you posted says.

This however, is a very interesting article.

Bram Stoker just popularized vampires in literature, he didn't invent them.
Serbian version of vampires is closer to what is now is the most common representation of vampires. In general, blood sucking undead existed in all Slavic cultures and non-Slavic people who were heavily influenced by them.

This is what is called trash journalism, putting catchy words to attract attention to the article, when actually there is nothing in it. Since when shoving a stone in someones throat makes them vampires? It's more likely they were slandering someone and that someone found it would be fun to put them to death and shut up this way.

Bram Stoker is perhaps single handedly the reason modern culture is still obsessed with Vampires. I love Dracula despite its flaws, read it at least 4 times now. Joseph le Fanu was equally effective with Carmilla, a vampire tale I strongly recommend to fans of the genre. Vampire like monsters are ancient and span most of the major continents. But the form of blood sucker we celebrate today is derived largely from slavic and German folklore.

Bram Stoker probably had his knowledge of vampire lore from the remarkable traveler Ármin Vámbéry, a Hungarian. Characters named Arminius in vampire stories are tributes to him.

But you're right about Carmilla; it is an exquisitely creepy story, without a word too many or out of place. Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu made vampire stories popular well before Bram Stoker. Carmilla (1871-1872, in his collection In a Glass Darkly) preceded Stoker by 25 years and influenced Dracula and many other subsequent works strongly.

Much of Le Fanu's writing draws on indigenous Irish lore. But not the vampire material. He got that from Calmet's "Treatise on ... vampires of Hungary, Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia" and other sources on the folkways of Styria.

The best and the creepiest vampire story for me was "Упырь" ("The Vampire") novella by A.K. Tolstoy. The second one is "Семья вурдалака" ("The Family of the Vourdalak"). Both these novels freaked me out for a long time when I was a kid.

Yes please, and all the rest! ;) Remember outside Hairy Bear Inn in the night? Suddenly a Fleder just jumped down from the roof into the courtyard and started the slaughter? Those tough guys who negatively commented on Geralt had no chance. I still tried to save them though.
