Immersion Breaking

Going through Act 2 in W2 and someone spat and me, shouting, "Cosplayers!" I've also heard numerous eye-rolling references to LOTR along the way. Please tell me you'll curb this for W3; it really drags you out of the world and the experience you're trying so hard to craft.

They craft the world really well . As for the references I think it`s CDPR`s way of tipping their hat at eastereggs to movies and games that we have all shared at one time or another .
From witcher 1 there were many

It's precisely the fact that the game is so well crafted in every other way, that when it happens, not as actual easter eggs but during the regular course of the game, it's so jarring.

The little easter eggs make give me a small glimpse at CDPR's personality
, like when Henslet walked with his men, clasped them on the shoulder, ate and drank with them. However, I'll admit, I'd hardly call the LotR pop culture references an easter egg so much as an easter ham.

Yeah i`ll admit that one was a little over the top . Thankfully there aren`t that many that hit you in the mug full force . Most of them are just subtle ones .

Yes, this LOTR reference was one of great many reasons I hated Iorweth path. It really made me cringe. There is always a way to do it in a more subtle way. For example, in Divinity 2 DKS you hit a popular reference like every 5 minutes without being aware of it, like a password "rosebud" to free some pigs (reference to "Citizen Kane" movie).

I disagree, I think they should keep them if it is in a satirical way.

don't know if you know this or if you havent read the books, but most of the original stories were dark parodies of classic fairy tales. so if they do make a few satirical references to other games (like skyrim, dragon age or JRPGS) it would be very much to the original spirit of the novels.

Well, to be honest, I do not like it in the books. I remember I started to read The Last Wish (Russian translation) long time ago, and I did not really like this parody vibe. I got over it eventually, but for me it is something that actually detracts from The Witcher series. I am more into dark fantasy, with A Song of Ice and Fire as a paradigm. It's funny, actually - TW2 is a serious game with some funky references, while D2DKS is a more humorous game with very subtle references. I would prefer CDPR to keep them subtle as well, more like a puzzle to figure out.

I just love it the most. The intertextuality between "our tales" and the witcher-world's tales. :p

While I can understand your reasoning behind it, I don't think that restricting the developers personality to a game is the right way to go... Especially if there's no concrete proof that this have damaged the game as a whole. In fact although it may cause some people not to enjoy a game equally much it has been a vital aspect to many indie games and other smaller development team throughout the years video games have been developed.

A recent point of interest regarding this was made by "Campster" on youtube in which he explained the importance of the developers interest in HP love craft and the Heavy Metal music genres and the impact this had on Doom 1 and Doom 2. This is of course only one example of many, if you look at how commited many of the smaller development teams are to the game they are making, you will quickly realize that a part of them are in all of these games you, I and everyone else have enjoyed for hours and hours to come.

Yes, you are right in some regards it can deter from immersion for some people but if this truly were something which the community would consider damaging it would be removed already. You'd be suprised on how active CD RED are regarding its consumers input about the game and as long as majority is pleased with the content it will stay. Always remember that there's more people than you enjoying the game and therefore these "easter eggs" have had a more positive effect on the game rather than a negative one.

This was perhaps the only reference that was over the top in TW2. Most of the easter eggs were probably missed by people because of their subtlety.

I just assumed Middle Earth existed in that Universe as well. In fact, if we go with Tolkien's assertion that the histories of Middle Earth are a distant past of our Primary universe, then by association the witcher world also exists in the Primary universe.

I actually have no idea about the location of the witcher world, and I also don't know what its proper name is supposed to be, but Middle Earth is supposed to be located northwest of the British Isles.

If we put stock in Tolkien's creative license, then LOTR references in TW2 don't break immersion at all.

What about the "piece of lembas" line from Iorveth in Act 1? Not too many picked up on the reference. It's easy to latch on to the more obvious ones and cry about that but honestly, there's nothing wrong with some humour now and then. Whenever someone says that The Witcher 2 is pretentious (they have to be some kind of morons but hey, there's no accounting for tastes right...) I point to the scene where they're talking about the one ring. It's great because it shows the absurdity that magic brings about and it shows some of REDs personality. They're not so rigid and stiff as not to crack a joke sometimes.

I didn't have problems with the so called "in-jokes" or "easter eggs" or "pop culture comedic references" or whatever. I was playing a polished game with well written characters, developed plot, a beautiful and believable world and excellent voice acting. A mere sentence is not going to break immersion for me in such an amazing game. If it was a shittier game, then maybe. But for a game of this quality, it takes a little more than a joke to do that. Maybe some people need more for them to be hurled out of the experience than others. I for one had nothing against the easter eggs. I loved them. Most of them were subtle as fuck, while one or two were quite obvious. No big deal.

Or because we are decent folks not that deep into the geek topics/things... It is normal.

Can't agree more. And I'm among those people very deep in geeky things. "Jarring" is the correct term.

I am curious. Besides LOTR and Sex in the City, what other things were referenced?

I loved all the easter eggs in The Witcher 2 . I think they should keep them in The Witcher 3 , really makes little fun moment within the complex and dark story line .

Sex in the City was referenced?

Only shitty easter egg was the blatant one in Iorveth path but other than that all of em are okay.

What's really immersion breaking is that the game tells you to save the world when there all these other fun sidequests to do.

There are two elven women in Flotsam named Carrie and Miranda(?), they have a shoe collection in their house, and they also talk in a similar manner to the women on the show.

Haha, Prison Break was also referenced :D/>, thanks for the link, SC.
