Impressions about DS 2

Recently I watched this video and I've been reading in this forum all the people who praise the Dark Soul games (I actually played like, 2h of Dark Souls on PC before disinstalling it)... well...

Does anybody think, like me, that Dark Souls sucks? I mean, it's japan-style RPG crap! Damn, look at those giant swords.

Graphics are outdated even for this generation and combat is slow, crappy, boring. While playing Dark Souls I felt like my character was under the effect of 10x gravity.

I really don't understand why many people think that TW3 should be inspired by this junk. Even The Witcher 1 is A LOT better than this.

Well, first of all, I didn't play it but I plan to, someday. So I can just comment based on what I saw in videos or read in forums. I must admit that every time I see it, I think pretty much as you do, that fights seem heavy and clumsy.

Turns out that people really like the sense of danger and tension it gives to the player, by making you aware that the game itself is brutal and unforgiving, and the slightest mistake or carelessness will cost you A LOT. Aside from this, the combat system is probably the most praised of this generation, or close to it. That must mean something, right? Most people refer to this when they think The Witcher games should learn from Dark Souls, since its combat system is generally considered way better than that of The Witcher 2. So I guess it must be better than it seems, and that's why I plan to try for myself.

And when a game is good, advanced graphics aren't essential for the experience. On the oversized weapons and enemies I agree, though, it's something I just don't like.

So you didn't like it because the game has some silly giant swords and the graphics aren't great? Lol.

Boy I wish The Witcher 1(and 2) had a combat system as good as Dark Souls(or Severance).

If you compare it to other JRPGs, it is (with Dragon's Dogma) probably the westernish RPG by Japan ever, so i don't really get your point, if you say it is a typical JRPG, no, it's not.

If you carry a 2 metres long sword with you, of course you are slow as a snail, it's called physics.

Oh wow. I'm... not even going to dignify that. I could go into detail and explain to you why the series rock so much but I get the feeling that you're not gonna change your mind.

I do agree on the PC port though, it sucks so much ass. It's a shame, I want to give them my money but they don't seem to want it. Hopefully the DS2 port will be better. If yes, then they have my money.

I must say he has a point on the graphics. They are a bit outdated but the art design and environments make more than up for it. When I first arrived at the altar sunlight my jaw dropped. The world is so dark I was really happy to catch a glimpse of the sunlight.
About the so called slow combat, well that's a matter of perspective. Compared to Dragon Age II's combat on drugs it's slow indeed. It gives me the feeling that I'm truly in control of what I do, compare it to a chess game. It's not just button mashing, it's about planning your moves and anticipating the moves of your enemy.

Wait, no TW combat shouldn't be anything like DS combat because the former has better animations, fluidity and control. I would like the intensity and difficulty of DS combat in TW games, but without the loss of animations, fluidity and control.

And the two games already have similar features in combat, namely the need to use items and equipment thoughtfully, and also not to hack/slash, so that's great.

Although i appreciate your attempt at showing us your polite and comprehensive open mind, try to keep that crap to yourself.

I'd only listen to your opinion about it if you beat a decent boss like the Bellfry Gargoyles. After you beat them you could say you 'tried the game' and have some understanding of it but saying you played it for two hours doesn't mean shit.

My diagnosis: You sucked at the game and are now throwing a tantrum.

Really hope combat will be faster but it still looks amazing. This looks more like a horror game compared to previous one. And that cloak or whatever that was animation looked really nice.

Give the OP a break.

Can't you make a point without resorting to Ad Hominem?

He didn't like DS and, apparently, is trying to prevent it from overspilling to TW3. His points are quite debatable. Jesus.

I didn't like the game at all. Let's focus on the combat system, because from the plot/setting and graphics point of view, the two games stand at TOTALLY different levels ( The Witcher series being at the top, Dark Souls at the very bottom).
Play Dark Soul, start a slow and clumsy fight, die , retry 10 times. Then play The witcher 2, start a beautiful dynamic, fluid yet believable sword fight.
Difficulty is not a value in itself.

It's a shame that somebody wants something similar to the Dark Soul combat system in TW3. I really hope devs are aware of this equivocation, they're too smart to ruin their awesome game.

I also think they're smart, so I am not worried about TW3. You shouldn't be either, OP :)

The DS 2 combat seemed similar to the last one, but with some changes, like the character movement. I can't really comment on how it compares to DS combat without playing the new game.

No I'm not gonna give him a break. He clearly doesn't understand the appeal of the series and his complaints are unfounded (playing only for 2 hours...?). Besides, his points are for the most part shallow, based on ignorance and he outright insults people who don't think like him. And ad hominem? If anything, he brought that on himself, considering some of the offensive shit he's saying.

" it's japan-style RPG crap! Damn, look at those giant swords." You're actually defending someone who says ignorant, offensive stuff like this? The ridiculous thing is that he seems to completely misunderstand 1: the direction of the game and 2: that it's based on western weaponry. His prejudice seems almost racist and it's fucking disgusting. To explain it further, one element of the game is that it's a fantasy. Giant weapons isn't unheard of in a fantasy. Hell, there's bigger weapons in Dragon Age 2. Or what, does all fantasy games have to be exactly the fucking same now? Is any innovation or creative vision to do something different inherintly wrong because it's something different... Besides the zweihander and claymore swords do exist, the armament in Dark Souls are based on real weapons. They're not made up. Most of the combat is actually really realistic and the weapons handle as such.

Graphics, I don't give a shit. Can't believe people are still even thinking about that. No wonder everyone looks down on gamers.

Combat is slow for a reason. If he'd play the game, he'd understand why. I'm not interested in writing a dissertation so I'm skipping this obvious design philosophy that FromSoft employs in their games.

"I really don't understand why many people think that TW3 should be inspired by this junk. " This is what offends me the most. He doesn't understand AT ALL what Dark Souls is about, how it's presenting its lore or how well designed it is and yet he has the nerve to call it "junk". That is just appalling.

And I can't believe you even want to defend him. Has rationality and common sense completely escaped this forum or what's going on. There's some members here who really take the time to present an eloquent post in order to explain their opinions on any given subject. Which is what you're supposed to do. This guy just whines without understanding what the series is about or even taking the time to explore what's so appealing about them. I'm fucking disgusted. I'm out of here before I vomit.

And I bet the moderators won't even issue him a warning. I get shit if I make a joke, this guy calls Dark Souls "japen style crap" and gets nothing. C'est la vie.

Wait Foggy, you're saying graphics are superficial, and implying only stupid people like them, and you're deriding someone else for being shallow and ignorant.

But this isn't your fault- there's a whole line of thought regarding graphics and their role in video games which is difficult to overcome because of the industry's own bad choices.

I played the game until I arrived in Anor Londo (and visited a painting). I already killed this giant wolf, etc., but then I just stopped playing because I had no motivation left.
Yes, I liked the combat system. If you got into it, it was pretty good and I was able to do some nice fighting (I didn't die too often and sometimes I killed bosses on the first try), but there was something lacking. Yes, the world had a special atmosphere, but the game itself was not a lot more than just slaying stuff. It was fun for a while, but I prefer a "real" story in a game. Or maybe a little bit of diversity. Creative Quests, Dialogue, etc.

And speaking of the graphics: Not every studio can do graphics like The Witcher 2 and this is okay, but 2D-Trees right in front of the player in 2011(12)? Come on... They put some love into the "overall look" of the game (the vista when arriving in Anor Londo is great), but there are nearly no details.

I hope they improve on a few things in Dark Souls 2 and maybe I'll buy it again. Some people think Rpg is fighting with a lot of numbers and calculation in the backround, but for me personally a story is more important - but that doesn't make Dark Souls a bad game.

Suit yourself.

I could call you out on your rant about graphics, because, apparently, you seem to be under the impression people should like what you like and to the extent that you like it. But I won't. Not really interested in reopening that can of worms for now. Maybe next time.

This is obviously an emotionally charged topic for you. I can understand that.
