In-combat Inventory access & potion use. Also, food mid-combat.

Don't know if this had been officially answered.

As you all probably know already, we have two quickslots available BUT we can also use the inventory and use any potions there mid-combat. We can also use oils in the middle of a fight and although the game doesn't allow drinking food etc. if you put it in a quickslot you can actually eat during combat.

So is any of this a bug? Is this what the devs actually wanted? To be able to use oils, potions and food (especially food since that quickslot bypass seems a bit clunky) mid-combat? I'm not whining, I just want to know what the devs intent is here as I always like to play my games as they were intended to be played and not take advantage of glitches.

Does anyone know about this?

No idea. But Aquired Tolerance is far and away the best skill in the game for this very reason. You can just open your inventory and drink every potion in the game before a battle.

Since when can you use oils mid fight? The very moment the combat music starts you're unable to apply oils to your weapon.

Of course you're able to drink potions during a fight, that's what the witcher is all about!

Exactly, you shouldn't be allowed to apply oils while in combat. If it would be possible it would totally destroy the meaning of preparation before fights by using correct oil and also skills related to them. There's a skill that makes oils never wear off for a reason.

You actually can (PC Steam version). You can use oils and repair your weapon/armor in combat.

Mmh that is interesting.. because i play on steam and i can't. Maybe it is difficulty related ?

I play on DM and also was able to do it on easier difficulties. Just drag and drop an oil to a sword.

Mmh me too... very interesting though because i play with a control and when you try it with a controller you'll get a "you can't do this during combat" prompt.
It would be strange if it would work with a mouse, i will try this.

Being able to repair your weapon in combat is ridiculous, and the same goes for eating food. I think locking out the inventory during combat would be interesting, because I have been guilty of going in and grabbing potions.

I guess they just left it open for the user to decide. If you think it is cheesy, don't do it. If you don't mind silly stuff, go for it.

Well then. I can confirm that you can use oil during combat if you do so with a mouse.... however when you do it with a controller you get this

Very odd

I think the "can't use" should be the correct intent.

By reading your comments I conclude that applying oils during combat is definitely a bug and should be fixed. Is there a way to report it somewhere officially?

Also, eating food and drinks during combat is also a bug IMHO because you can only do it through the quickuse slots glitch. This should be reported for fixing too.

What remains to know is if the devs intended for Geralt to be able to drink up to two potions mid-combat via quickslots and all else should be used before combat starts or they just added the quickslots as a convenience and it is totally legit to just enter inventory and drink as many potions as you want during combat.
I really don't want to bypass the developer's intent here. Is CDPR staff reading the forums, maybe they can give us an answer.

P.S. The above glitches should be reported. If you do know the correct way to do it, by all means do it.

Being able to use food from the quick access slot is not a bug. Because if disallowed completely, early combat on DM would be... well... annoying at least.

I think that idea was you need to prepare for combat by applying oils/drinking decoctions and filling in quick slots. When in combat you shouldn't be allowed to access your inventory and change oils/quick items. Note how food slot is automatically filled with another food when you use up everything. And used potions stay (technically, food disappears and potions don't, that's why they stay I think). I guess, at some point someone decided that disallowing inventory access completely would be too annoying for the player, so they allowed to swap used potions/food during combat. Everything else is probably a bug. Or last minute design choice to make combat even less annoying.

Ideally I would prefer disallowing inventory access completely, but having more quick slots. Thee slots would suffice for me. :)

I say Add options that:

1. forbids food eating in combat.

2. 5x Slower health regen from food, but 5 x duration.

3 Animations to pop potions in and outside of combat. Animations that leaves Geralt more vulnerable if made during combat (less effective parrying and more damage taken). Only potions already equipped can be used.

4. Longer potion durations if taken outside of combat (like 4x or something) and 10% less toxicity.
